For the units

If I had the money, some form of pale wood with white walls/wall tiles to maximise the poor light. Floor would be something hard wearing but easy to mop, a neutral tile in all probability. Boring as hell, obviously, but the damn space is so poky and dark that strong colours would make me feel claustrophobic.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 01/08/2024 03:14

I got sage green. Top tip. Dont get brass effect fittings. It's a bugger getting kettles and toasters that have th. Though I did get sage green electricals.

Bluevelvetsofa · 01/08/2024 08:37

Rather than having tiles or splashback, you can get very heavy duty paint. Costs £75 a tin, but cheaper than the alternatives and means you can change colour more easily.

I’d keep the natural wood, unpainted.

DeclansAFeckingDream · 01/08/2024 08:40

Probably oak or white. Easy to change wall colour and kettle/toaster etc. We had sage green fitted about ten years ago and it's nice, but I think getting a little dated now.

80smonster · 01/08/2024 08:42

Walnut stained wood

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 01/08/2024 08:44

Dark green and natural oak - nature inspired - for a large, double height space with lots of natural light

SandyY2K · 01/08/2024 08:46

White gloss. Easy to clean as well.

I have got a new kitchen and I love the white. White never goes out of fashion.

I also think light grey is nice too.

SuePreemly · 01/08/2024 08:46

Something true neutral again. Mine is 10 years old and looks new. Shaker style, and it's not cream or grey but is matched to F&B shaded white. Oak tops (yes I know they get hate but properly looked after they're gorgeous and mine have been treated so they don't go orange)

I did have stiffykey blue (deep navy) wall but it's recently gone deep blush/terracotta pink and I bloody love it. Neutral units means you can have fun with the other bits so wall colours, accessories, table etc as your tastes and trends change.

CocoapuffPuff · 01/08/2024 08:50

Clearly unfashionable but I'd go for wood, a nice oak. I like coloured kitchens but I wouldn't fit one myself. I like the warmth of wood.

LaWench · 01/08/2024 08:51

We have a good sized kitchen with a big window so could go for dark blue or green but I don't think I'd stay in love with them the same. I'm planning Cashmere/ mushroom cabinets with white worktops, keep flipping between gloss and shaker style. We have an old 90s kitchen we're living with until we have enough savings to do the kitchen. So loads of time to change my mind. I'd like sage green walls, not sure on the tiles.

Blisterly · 01/08/2024 08:52

I would for a colour you love and want to live with. Soft neutrals are great if you like changing things up as you can repaint the walls (or the cabinets if you like). Trends come and go, navy was popular a few years ago, last couple of years was sage green, now it’s terracotta shades.

TizerorFizz · 01/08/2024 08:53

We have no tiles in the kitchen. Hob on the island. Sink is built slightly forward and has a mirror wall behind it. I’ve got a mix of pale grey and soft white.

I’ve just seen a pale blue kitchen that was wonderful. If we repaint, pale blue is top of my list.

GradGirl · 01/08/2024 08:53

I’d go for inframe oak.

Delatron · 01/08/2024 08:58

DH and I couldn’t agree so went white. Then added colour with a yellow (!) oven and tiles behind the oven (instead of a splash back). The island is grey with a stainless steel work surface . We’ve added pops of colour throughout the rest of the kitchen in the sofa/cushion/shutters.

I do love the green kitchens that are fashionable at the moment though. Last year I liked the navy ones.

I think natural wood and mixing up work surfaces works really well too.

Grey is old fashioned now, just about to paint my units green and change the flooring. Definitely not grey, it's gone the same way as stainless steel and glass sinks. Panelling and grey windows will be so last year soon.

Why does it matter if a colour is 'fashionable' or not?

fussychica · 01/08/2024 12:25

Mines a few years old now but I went for matte white handleless on the wall and a very pale grey on the base units. Still love it. Have changed the wall colour several times to ring the changes and have just gone from a graphite flooring to Andalucian tile style which has changed the look completely.
In a bigger kitchen I might be tempted by a light sage.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/08/2024 12:38

Light cream, Shaker style. Classic, won’t date.,

Kokomjolk · 01/08/2024 12:53

We just got plain matt white with oak worktops, white tile backsplash, big grey tiles on the floor. Very basic and 'boring' but it's a small space and can't take anything too striking (though I think the oak is gorgeous).

The walls are painted a sort of teal colour so it's not fully neutral and it will be easy to change that in the future.

BinkyBeaufort · 01/08/2024 12:55

I went for dark kombu green last year, with white worktops and palest pink walls. I love it.

bilbodog · 01/08/2024 12:56

Im currently planning a new kitchen and these are my inspiration at the moment for colour

ClassicBBQ · 01/08/2024 13:05

I'd go for sky blue, pale pink or India yellow. I'm not a fan of neutrals.

beenhereawhile123 · 01/08/2024 13:07

Green is the new grey will be terribly dated soon. Go for white/cream or wood s they are timeless then change wall colour etc to do trends

RabbitsRock · 01/08/2024 13:09

Another vote for duck egg blue but sage green would be lovely too
