Best cleaner for wheelie bins?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/07/2024 11:20

My wheelie bin reeks and I have to sort it out as the only place it can go is outside my kitchen window 🤢

I re bagged everything and washed it out yesterday but the smell is still there. I need something that will really deodorise and make it smell nice again. Baking soda isn't cutting it!

I used washing up liquid and rinsed well then filled with water and bleach - let it sit then drained it

I was worried about splashing bleach everywhere and ending up with ruined clothes, I'm a bit clumsy 😂

Best cleaner for wheelie bins? DH 😂

He's very much along the lines of "oh leave it, it'll rain soon" 🙄

Baking soda won't kill the microbes in your bin. You need a good disinfectant or bleach. At a push you may be able to get rid of most of the smell with hot water and washing up liquid along with a good scrub.

Don't you have any old clothes you can wear?

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/07/2024 13:56

I use buckets of hot water, a dishwasher tablet, leave to steam/soak for a few hours, scrub thoroughly with a cheap plastic broom. Leave to dry in sun with lid open.

That's what I used yesterday but clearly my bin is stinkier that yours- the shame! 😂

No, not that I'm happy to get bleach stained.

A good glug of biological wash liquid plus a scoop of oxy bleach (EG Vanish or Pink Stuff) sorted the issue for me.
I used Jeyes fluid before and although it's a different smell, it still stinks. Took ages to stop smelling

BigDahliaFan · 31/07/2024 14:08

We pay a man to clean it, £10 once a month. He has a machine in a van....it was very stinky before as even though we bag everything it's a 2 week collection, we have pets....

Eviebeans · 31/07/2024 14:12

I regularly spray mine inside and out with peppermint oil mixed with water in an old spray bottle- it does help

Oh perhaps I won't try that then especially as it lives right outside the house. Just realise I have Dettol laundry sanitiser , that might do the trick.

I tried eucalyptus oil but didn't do much but once I have it smelling sweeter it might.

120 quid a year?! I'd rather do it myself 😂

My dh cleaned ours and then one of the neighbours swapped it on the sly! Never did find out who it was 🙄

twistandscream · 31/07/2024 20:02

I jet wash mine now and again. It gets rid of smells fine . Have to be careful though, so that you're not in the line of fire if it shoots back out at you. I have been covered in horrible water in the past but have the knack now.

Definitely not risking that, the bin juice was vile yesterday 😂🤮🤢

We also have a man that cleans ours once a month. We’re in the North though so it’s a tenner every three months!

Jeyes Fluid.
Smells so disgusting, you know it's doing the job. Grin

Nah it will be fine - don’t go jet washing it and wear old clothes. It’s a dilution anyway

ExitPursuedByABare · 31/07/2024 20:11

I use a big wheelie bin black bag to keep it from smelling.

gamerchick · 31/07/2024 20:11

Pay the bin cleaners here. £3.50 well spent.

Using yet more single use plastic isn't a good idea. We're already throwing tons of plastic away all the time.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor do you have food waste collection where you are?
