Sleeping outside UK

TheSecretIsland · 30/07/2024 23:15

So the little boy did it during covid, but does anyone else do it?

Lots of research seems to say sleeping outside is beneficial and I have dreadful sleep now so thinking about it.

Tried tonight as so balmy but got bitten, so need mozzie proof

A hopeful bump.

I've been looking at tents and hammocks but would love to know if anyone else does it.

I've got mozzie spray on tonight so will see how it goes but looking for something more long term

I just open my windows fully and the head of my bed is under the window. I leave the blinds open too once sunrise gets to about half five or later. Is it important to be properly outside?

Many thousands of people will be camping right now in the Uk.

But not all year.

I've got camping stuff and maybe it is as simple as that but I'm keen to set something up for every night. Bit like cold water therapy and the people I know that sea swim all year, but without the swimming.

That sound great. Rest of my family are a window shut fan on mindset so looking for something fully outside.

I redid my (falling down) could conservatory into an open air porch. I’ve been tempted to sleep there when it’s warm, could easily hang big screen nets

Romeiswheretheheartis · 31/07/2024 22:25

I tried one night last year when it was really hot, just lying on the garden furniture, but couldn't sleep and by about 2ish I started feeling a bit too chilly and went back in, despite the house feeling like a sauna.

I don't think it would do your lungs much good to be sleeping outside in freezing conditions.

I thought that but the boy in the tent managed it, during covid and beyond.

You want to sleep outside all year round? Are you ok?

This made me laugh. Who knows. I'm convinced the all year swimmers are not ok but science seems to support them.

We know central heating isn't great for people and cold therapy is. This is cold therapy without the swimming.

Edited as weird autocorrect

I don't think that constitutes a scientific study and it might be too early to say if your son has suffered long term lung damage from breathing in sub zero temperatures for extended periods of time. I once had a job in a freezer warehouse. We took 15 minute breaks every hour.

Why was your son sleeping in a tent?

My boss sleeps outside when it gets warm. I think she uses a cushioned sun lounger with a mosquito net over the top. She's been doing it for years.

PeopleAreDicks · 31/07/2024 23:03

Fuck no. Look at a map of the world or a globe if you have one. Look how far north the UK is. You would die of exposure. Rough sleepers suffer terribly, it’s not a therapeutic treatment but a way to die.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/07/2024 23:05

Read somewhere sensible that keeping your room no hotter than 14 at night helps reduce the risk of dementia.

clearmoon · 31/07/2024 23:08

rough sleepers dies of exposure, pneumonia, bronchitis, hypothermia..... they have a life expectancy many decades less than average.

Rough sleepers don't have tents, and there are a lot more things at play in causing those conditions, than just sleeping outside.

ByCupidStunt · 31/07/2024 23:10

Go for it!

westcountrywoman · 31/07/2024 23:13

I had reason to sleep outside overnight this winter (not even in a tent but I had a warm sleeping bag and a shelter). I had the best nights' sleep I've had in years. The cold air did something to me for sure. I was perfectly wrapped up warm (base layer thermals, decent sleeping bag, woolly hat etc) but breathing the cooler air made me sleep like a baby. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 31/07/2024 23:13

Cold water swimmers swim for short periods of time. Have you ever camped in the spring or autumn? It's fucking cold at night. I'm not sure if you are kidding or not but in case you aren't, no you can't sleep outdoors all year round.

Purpledefector · 31/07/2024 23:15

Such a great idea! We have a covered deck and I've slept out there on the garden sofas ... as a one off treat... but now you say it I might try it more.
I was woken up in the night with loads of rustling and odd noises and when I looked there were 2 hedgehogs shagging literally next to the deck!!!

shootingstar1 · 31/07/2024 23:20

I've camped loads and despite the temperature outside I always feel clammy in the morning . A tent can get very hot in the warm weather and lots of condensation can build up making things feel extra sweaty. Camping in the cold can also have the same effect .

When we were younger we would camp all year round, have been away in the tent every month of the year and experienced all the weather could throw at us.

Camping in a tent is not something we would choose to do now (dedicated motorhomers but still go away all year) but it is like the old saying, as long as you have the correct equipment you can be warm & dry despite what the weather tries to do to you.

Yumchips · 31/07/2024 23:25

Does anybody have foxes in their garden whilst they are sleeping out there? That's my biggest fear.
