Sleeping outside UK

So the little boy did it during covid, but does anyone else do it?

Lots of research seems to say sleeping outside is beneficial and I have dreadful sleep now so thinking about it.

Tried tonight as so balmy but got bitten, so need mozzie proof

DH slept in a camping hammock in February one year, for a bushcraft weekend. Get the right kit and it's fine. He was toasty warm.

I’m still mentally scarred by the sounds of hedgehogs shagging. It was terrible, they chased each other around the garden and then there was all this thudding and sort of screaming and wheezing noises.

I once stayed at an Airbnb (a room in someone’s house) and the couple who lived there slept out all summer in their large, secluded garden. They had a sort of open gazebo with netting hung all around the sides (presumably bug netting) I don’t remember the details exactly but I thought it looked tempting, it was so hot indoors.

What sort of budget are we talking? If you’ve got money to throw at it I would be tempted to get some sort of lean to/garden room/pergola but with 3 sides set up.

I'd be scared sleeping outside, it's not safe here as our yard opens onto a tenfoot. We camp at proper sites though.

Babies used to be left outside for naps in the winter in their prams. I am intrigued by this thread and wouldn’t do it personally as my small garden is overlooked from every angle but somewhere with the right set up I could see the appeal

Are you maybe getting carried away with the pull of buying something new? Retail therapy.

Get out your existing tent, or buy a festival tent, and pitch it in the garden. If you're still happily sleeping outside by the end of Sept, shop around for an upgrade then. They'll probably be selling off leftover stock and it'll be a lot cheaper than buying right at the start of summer hols. Plus less chance of getting a white elephant. If you already have a tent you don't need something weatherproof for December now.

Does anybody have foxes in their garden whilst they are sleeping out there? That's my biggest fear.

What do you think a fox is going to do to a fully grown adult human? Have you ever seen one, they are tiny!!

I think this sounds great - don't see why it would be a problem if you have the correct gear.

Comparing it to rough sleeping is silly - you'd have all the right stuff and could go inside if it was raining or got too cold! Sleeping in the cold doesn't mean allowing your body temperature to get dangerously low. Babies in Scandinavia are put outside to nap and it gets much colder there.

I've always fancied a sleep porch. Used to be v common in the US before AC.

I read a book recently called Sleepless by Annabel Abbs and she talks a lot about sleeping outside- you should read it OP.
