@godmum56 as a disabled person yes I do. I know not everyone would get it, but it would exempt most people who genuinely need a bigger car for their disability. It would not help those who use their own car and maybe once a week or once a month need a larger car to take a disabled relative out.

but you also don't have to use your mobility payment with Motability. They are a private car lease company.

The top 1% receive 13% of income in the UK and pay circa 30% of income tax.

If just a fifth of that 1% leave then the UK loses an amount of income tax equivalent to everything paid by the bottom 25%. Eg if we lose 20% of the 1% highest tax payers, the impact on would be equivalent to forcing the bottom 25% of the population to double the amount of tax they pay. Or in fact equivalent to the bottom 65% of taxpayers paying 50% more.

Eg imagine basic rate income tax increasing from 20% to 30% - that's the impact of just 0.2% of the population leaving. It absolutely critical to our tax base that we don't lose higher earners.

This. However, the people raging in envy will never get this. The actual numbers tax payers who make a difference are really slim in the UK. It is a very precarious position we are putting ourselves in. But just like Brexit we will be driven by hate and make decisions which will drive the country to the ground.

On the basis that Starmer and Reeves lied through their teeth before the election, and have now shown their true colours after it, nothing is off the table I think. In May Starmer stood up and said that they wouldn't touch the winter payment and then, Oh My, what a surprise, they've axed it unless you fit some very limited criteria.

And Reeves has now said that she will have to raise taxes in the Autumn - well, all those pay rises have got to come from somewhere, not to mention all of our uninvited guests that have arrived by boat that have to be accommodated.

Yet, tax super-wealthy (which would include some Labour donors)? Oooh no, can't do that.

If you thought the Tories were bad, you've seen nothing yet.

Crikey, there's a lot of hatred for people living in ,luxury, 😳

leicester66 · 31/07/2024 19:23

Why should inheritance tax be raised why punish people that have worked hard and want to help out their children. The hate on successful hardworking people makes me sick

You’re not punishing the people who worked hard though. They’re dead. You’re punishing the people who get it passed on to them who didn’t work for it.

Michelle Mone, hopefully.

Yes!! 👏 👏👏

RavenhairedRachel · 31/07/2024 20:03

I reckon they will raise the pension age. Scrap pensioners free prescriptions. They seem to targeting the older generation at the moment

VickyPollard25 · 31/07/2024 20:03

I think they are coming for universities. Hopefully by the time they do, there will be so many apprenticeship schemes that employers will cover those costs.

But it’s funny how Labour tries to keep people down. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing good to say about the Conservatives either. If just seems that Labour really tries to hurt the little man and those who aspire to do better.

leicester66 · 31/07/2024 20:10

So what that they didn’t work for the inheritence it is a gift from their loved ones why give ot to the government

FayeGreener · 31/07/2024 20:22

Just out of interest, is there anyone on here with a lot of money who doesn’t think they’ve worked hard for it?

Yup. The thing with running an economy is that it is difficult. Balancing tax revenues in order to extract the most out of the electorate without pissing them off so badly that they either leave or don't vote for you again is tricky.

If it was easy, it would have been done by now.

To quote John F Kennedy:
"We choose to do these things, not because they are easy, but because we thought they'd be easy"*

*I paraphrase, or maybe conflate a bit of BoJo, which is clearly sacrilege and I apologise.

Kneidlach · 31/07/2024 20:26

Personally I really like this quote: “Taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society”. I’m happy to live in a society that cares about inequality and unfairness and tries to do something about them. The mentality of being scared or angry that the government are ‘coming for’ you and your wealth can’t be a nice one to have.

Although having said that I hope they ‘come for’ employers who don’t pay a decent living wage or have people on such shit precarious contracts that the state is forced to step in and pay tax credits etc to people who are in work.

JustAnotherDadOf2 · 31/07/2024 20:43

Labour under Starmer have inherited the conservatives financial basket case that Sunak inherited from Zil Trust and Crazy Counting the conservatives themselves inherited from Brown/Blair. When the conservatives re-take the country in 10 or so years, then no doubt Starmers Labour will have finished the job off once and for all...

It’s only going to get worse as the gap grows.

Bengalstripeycat · 31/07/2024 20:53

Oh you mean bring in the envy tax against the people who make sacrifices to send children to private school, pay for private health etc, not having more children than they personally can afford to clothe and feed etc, good luck lets see what that looks like when they all want access to state education and health care. Its the super rich with access to private jets, freebies etc and the celebs the government need to go after but they would rather suck up to them along with so many others who love reading about their life styles in trashy celeb magazines!

dottiehens · 30/07/2024 18:00

My question is who would like to remain here? Tax to death even for breathing. In the meantime masses of people moving in from poor countries so we will never catch up. What a misery land.

Edited

You are so right. Those with money will just leave if taxed too much because they can! Then there will be a vacuum at the top where the money was, meaning we will probably lose higher management across industries too.

I thought we were meant to dislike migrants?

Jellyrunner · 31/07/2024 21:18

that’s council tax. not what a government would propose. it’s in the name.

Gillbertine · 31/07/2024 21:25

Countrylife2002 · 30/07/2024 17:55

Maybe it would be a good idea to raise council tax for home owners, so that there is a differentiation between what renters pay and what home owners pay (speaking a a home owner I know how lucky I am). Graduated progressive rise depending on value of property.

Council tax is for the services you get living in a house not whether you own or rent.

sarahd29 · 31/07/2024 21:27

In every overseas country I go
to I pay a local tax to the hotel and in many a departure tax at the airport.

Maybe we can start there..

7Blunders · 31/07/2024 21:28

I wouldn't mind but non of what they have said, in my mind will fix any issues.

They won't tackle inequality in school or society.
