I'm not inclined to answer your new question when you're not answering any of those put to you.

I wasn't the person you responded to originally, so you asked no questions of me. Whether they reply is up to them.

Would you like to answer my question though?

Hatfullofwillow · 31/07/2024 10:12

What did people expect, they said they were going to stick the Tories' fiscal rules? If people wanted something different they could have voted Labour in 2017.

Also you are going to penalise those that live rurally. Bigger cars are an essential when the hedge rows are tall and the tracks single. We also need the 4x4 element for the snow (highlands) and towing.

Don't worry! All that will be taken into account by your friendly local 'car size limitation team' who will determine your deservedness by applying a strict set of rules to your personal circumstances and those of your family.

If your application is successful you'll hear within 6 months and you'll be issued with a permit to show you have a special dispensation. Driving your big car without the permit will be an offence, but I'm sure you can manage without it for a few months.

There will be an appeals process if you're declined which will take a further 6 months.

Of course you'll need to reapply every 12 months and inform the authorities if your circumstances change otherwise there will be stiff penalties.😡

If you weren't being so massively patronising or so obviously looking to be confrontational, I would suggest that most people are comfortable with people earning a certain amount more than others (if they are actually doing a useful job for society like a surgeon rather than, say, an HR director or broker) but not the massive disparity we currently see between the top 1% (or top 0.1%) and the bottom 50%.

You should read Animal Farm!

What you mean is that you are only comfortable with jobs that you value highly being paid highly. With all due respect that’s not really relevant.

HR Directors have an import role making sure that employment and health & safety rules are followed

Brokers have an important role ensuring stuff is bought and sold efficiently (and when they break down - see Liz Truss) that’s a big problem.

The top 1% receive 13% of income in the UK and pay circa 30% of income tax.

If just a fifth of that 1% leave then the UK loses an amount of income tax equivalent to everything paid by the bottom 25%. Eg if we lose 20% of the 1% highest tax payers, the impact on would be equivalent to forcing the bottom 25% of the population to double the amount of tax they pay. Or in fact equivalent to the bottom 65% of taxpayers paying 50% more.

Eg imagine basic rate income tax increasing from 20% to 30% - that's the impact of just 0.2% of the population leaving. It absolutely critical to our tax base that we don't lose higher earners.

This is what many people don't understand.

Mrsdyna · 31/07/2024 10:22

Anyone who has the means to leave the UK should get out now. It's not going to get better anytime soon but in fact much, much worse.

Ozgirl75 · 31/07/2024 10:23

God what a load of commies some of you are. Business for the good of the country!? Capped earnings? Even China is less communist than that!

I think it will get better. If I have to pay more tax then so be it.

Sorry, I thought you were the same poster, my mistake.

My answer to your question is 'No'.

I don't think it will, it's on a downward trajectory.

Surely it is not in doubt that going round polluting the planet making it a less stable place just because one can is mean spirited?

So what habe yo done yo reduce your impact? Never buy food in packaging? Never fly? Cycle everywhere? Don't own a car? Never buy gadgets that have travelled long distances from China? Only buy British? Got solar panels? Heat source pump?

I guess if they trust the authorities in the gulf or the US to look after expats best interests in the same ways as their own, then good for them. I’d not go anywhere near those countries, either as a home or even a holiday destination.

Where are you thinking of?

You don't know what you're talking about. We've been here in one of the Gulf countries for over 10yrs now (not Dubai) and as expats we're looked after very well thank you. Hell will freeze over before we live in England again especially with Liebour in no10.

While planning to become an immigrant herself.

An immigrant who can no doubt support herself financially 100% and is not a burden on the country she chooses to live in.

thursdaymurderclub · 31/07/2024 10:43

schools, social work, libraries, refuse collection, environmental health, police and fire and rescue.

I think council tax needs to be looked at. i pay a fortune in council tax and and i am at an age where i don't use schools, don't use the libraries, my refuse collection is a joke and have no idea what the EH do in my area?

pocketaces · 31/07/2024 10:46

Lots of traditional tory voters went Labour this time round but they know they won't keep them so they will be thrown to the wolves. Taxing the rich rich is a good political soundbite but labour's definition of rich captures the ordinary Middle class person. If you're on benefits Labour will look after you. If you have money they hate you and reeves is salivating at the prospect

Andthereitis · 31/07/2024 10:50

sleepwouldbenice · 31/07/2024 00:50

"They have to tax things that aren't under incredible pressure already.

Nail salons, coffee shops, barbers, takeaways.

Tax that lot first."

Seriously?
So many small businesses that have really suffered from covid and cost of living impacting customer spending
And you'd want to drive more out of business?
Wow

There's a huge number of these 'shops' that are empty all day and cause locals concern about money laundering.
Having seen the recent scam of fake companies involved in benefits fraud I think we need to look carefully at businesses and work out how to ensure they don't go bust owing tax etc and then reappear quickly under another name.

upinaballoon · 31/07/2024 10:55

You should read 'Animal Farm'.

I had to, at school, as a teenager, so I suppose I've had a cynicism ever since then!

I recommend people do the maths and work out how much tax they actually pay (add up income tax, NI, VAT, fuel duty etc).

I reckon that for many on this forum 50-60p of every £1 they earn goes to the government one way or another

Then ask yourself is that right?

I always think it’s hollow when people paid a lot say “well, I’ll just leave”. It’s easier said than done. People have jobs, friends and families. I think it’s plausible some do. It’s also plausible that a bunch of foreign born folk up sticks. I think the more damaging and insidious is those people who don’t leave but simply reduce their hours (as we’ve seen with senior doctors), or retire early. The economy is hardly growing as it is, the labour force shrinking is the last thing we need.

It strikes me as deeply improbable that we can tax ourselves into growth.

Realistically they won't leave, but they will cut hours

Oldfatandfrumpy · 31/07/2024 11:19

Obviously hadn't read your full post 🤦‍♀️ but we are saying the same

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 31/07/2024 11:21

I'd like labour to address the unfairness with child maintenance. It doesn't affect me at the moment, but on here there is always someone who pays practically nothing for their child. It shouldn't be possible to get away with paying little or nothing.
