Where to live by the sea

I would like to relocate to live by the sea, somewhere in the UK. I live in a big city but was brought up by the sea in a foreign country. I crave swimming in clean beautiful water, walks on the beach, sea air and everything associated (except for tacky beach tourism crap).
My criteria is ambitious but i'd like to think not impossible considering the UK is a huge island.
I am looking for a real beach experience, but for me Brighton for example just won't fit the bill at all! Or anywhere you mainly get muddy beach or water uninviting for swimming.
As much as I love Norfolk and some of the beaches there are pretty decent (say Holkham bay) it's not much for swimming. Even in summer water is always dark, and the strong tide stairs mud and sand, and much of stinky seaweed. Great for walks and all, but no good swim. I also like a ragged scene and secluded beaches, just to add to my complicated brief.
Other places which I have considered and discounted so far:
Cornwall - the obvious choice for both amazing beaches and good swimming in some places, but from what I gather everyone warned me it's a nightmare in summer, too far, no jobs and I will be looked down at as a property privileged thief.
Pembrokeshire - similar reasons to Cornwall, maybe not for 'stealing'l locals homes but apparently not good place to live at all. Holiday yes, but don’t stay forever.
So where else?? Devon? Dorset? ..Or do I need to move to the meds for this kind of life?

There are. I live very close to numerous beautiful beaches most are virtually empty 52 weeks of the year. Pros your won’t struggle to find parking space! Amazing wildlife. Friendly people. Stunning scenery great for walking. Relatively cheap properties. Some absolutely stunning beaches with white sand and turquoise sea (when it’s not raining) particularly on the islands and places like the Ardnermerchan peninsula, lovely long days in the summer. Cons; it rains a LOT on the west coast, often a huge tidal range so sea is often stirred up and looks muddy. Water is bloody freezing you’ll need a good wetsuit, in many regions a shortage of well paid jobs (hence cheap properties), midges can make your life miserable, it can as be bloody windy, in the west it might be less of a cold wind because of the Gulf Stream, on the east coast its colder and windier and I mean a proper cold biting wind but probably less rain, Short dark days in winter and even more rain oh snd I should add we get a LOT of rain last year it started in August and carried on till end of April (for a few days). Let’s face it no one comes to Scotland in hope of warm days and barmy nights.
i was on one of my local beaches this evening watching seals it was me the dogs the seals a few buzzards, some oyster catchers a couple of gulls and a flock of sheep that’s busy for up here. Would I swim in the sea absolutely no way as I don’t own a 9mm wetsuit 🤣

But Aberdeen has a wonderful swimming pool doesn’t it? Stonehaven or a similar name. I’ve often thought of making a trip there for the swimming pool

Just had a quick peek to see how far your budget would go and actually it's hard to even spend it all up north!

Here's a quick example for £375k

Chathill in Northumberland, 2 miles from the gorgeous Beadnell Bay beach (see Google images of that bay, wow 🤩 )

Indeed - wow! Lovely looking place. I must visit. And properly looks decent. Good prices.
So what's it like living up there? What kind of jobs are up there? People? How is the food scene?

Wherever you go, you have to really check the place out.
West Wittering is a lovely beach with sand and dunes and there's a real holiday feel to it, but you have to walk for ages to get to the sea and then the sea is shallow for ages. So if its swimming in the sea with a bit of depth to it that may not be your thing.
But I agree that whole area is nice and somewhere I'm tempted to move to.

I will definitely check it out first. All the wonderful ideas on here have me many weekends to plan now 😃

Hi, was just looking in iPlayer.. can find it. Is this the right now for the show? Maybe it's no longer there?

Take a look at Gower near Swansea. For such a small area it has every kind of coastal area and some of the beaches are breathtaking.
The tides are huge and do affect the water clarity. Low water or a big storm will give you cloudier water but at other times it’s crystal clear.

Absolutely stunning. But what is it like living round there?

It's on the itvX streaming service (free), not iPlayer.

Guide price is another way of saying offers over - 500k is her max. But yes, lots of properties in Exmouth within budget. They're all at least a mile from the seafront though.

Blingismything · 31/07/2024 13:29

East Wittering, West Sussex.

Northern Ireland - check out Property Pal 😊

I don't live all the way up there (it's about 40 mins drive), I live in Whitley bay. I go Whitley bay beach most days for a walk along the promenade and a coffee. Or for brunch in cullercoats. It's so lovely having that on my doorstep and feel very lucky.

It's very close (20mins drive) to Newcastle city Centre where you can get decent jobs. Closer by there are also many business park where large companies have their offices (such as cobalt business park, quorum etc).
There's also multiple local hospitals and NHS sites. So it depends what you do for work. Post Covid I know plenty of people who actually work remotely for companies down in London, while enjoying all the benefits of living up here.

We have the 'metro' up here which is like the tube/overground train. It's very accessible and affordable, stops all around north Tyneside and is quick to get to city centre. Also good buses. A new train to Northumberland is coming soon too I believe.

Roads are good. Traffic not bad.

The people (Geordies) are known for being the friendliest in the country I believe! Very warm, welcoming, chatty.

There is low crime.

Maybe have a little summer visit to Northumberland and tour around a bit? I think you would love it

Margate, or Portsmouth as a wild card.

I can comment well having lived all over London and Brighton too. Can confirm Worthing is a great place if you want:
-A lovely quiet beach-
Beautiful countryside and walking nearby-
Friendly community, quite diverse and queer friendly
-Very good cafes restaurants pubs and bars (both traditional and also natural wines bars and small plates etc, craft breweries for a bit of pizazz)
-Two great cinemas and theatres
-Good schools
-Leafy parks
-Decent town centre with walkable shops
-Three train stations(!) and an easy enough commute straight to Victoria/East Croydon/Clapham
-Decent parking (especially compared to Brighton)
-And affordable homes! I bought my three bedroom house in a good area for only 30k more than my one bedroom flat in Brighton-For us it's been a no brainer and we love it, we're in our 30s and lots of our friends are following suit.
-Best areas: Check it out in person. Personally we're near the station on a leafy nice street, Tarring (West) is also desirable. But the best way to ascertain is to go and walk around
