Does anyone sleep through from night till morning? Frustrated!

I just cannot get a good stretch of sleep (unless I've been drinking!) Last night, I must have woken up every half an hour. I've tried night time gummies, lavender spray on the pillow. I only have one cup of coffee a day (in the morning). Is there anything else I can try? I'm really trying to reduce alcohol intake, so trying not to resort to wine to make me sleepier (although that works like a charm when I do). Do lots of people sleep right through the night?

I was genuinely shocked when I discovered – only recently! – that there are people who sleep all night through. I have never, ever, ever done that. I assumed I was normal.

Me and my dad used to terrify my mum as we both sleep so heavily. We both slept through a burglary, the aftermath, the police arriving, the burglar alarm...

No good asking me if I heard thunder overnight, there could have been people tap dancing by the bed and I wouldn't know!

I do most of the time. The only times that I don't is if I'm really stressed, if i've been drinking or when my period's due.
I do have a good bedtime routine though, doing my skincare and I do a 10-15min meditation before going to sleep. I also sleep alone which helps massively. My sleep improved tenfold when my now XH moved into the spare room before we separated. I also take a magnesium supplement. I didn't start taking it specifically for sleep, but I do feel my sleep is better quality now.

Nope. I consider it a good night if I get more than 4 hours. I've never been a great sleeper even as a child.

Just wondering how much magnesium people are taking to have a good nights sleep? I tried 500mg but it didn't work for me.. thanks

What type of magnesium was it? The magnesium citrate/oxide ones that are easily available in chemists/high street aren't that great tbh.and they cause diarrhea. Magnesium glycinate is a good one. It's more expensive but much better.

I'm the same OP. And my mouth dries out terribly too.

Going to take the magnesium advice!

You might find your mouth breathing. I was like this too. I woke up feeling terrible. I've just read breath by James Nestor and now I tried my mouth shut for a fortnight - and still do occasionally. My mouth is no longer dry, I don't need to pee, I sleep deeper and I don't snore - anymore!! I'd highly recommend it.

waitingforit · 30/07/2024 01:36

*you're mouth breathing
Now I tape my mouth shut - with surgical tape
Sorry for the typos!!

Rarely. I can with sleeping tablets but I hate how groggy I feel the next day.
ASMR videos worked for a little while, and magnesium tablets. They might be worth a try.

Every time I get a good sleep pattern, they put on some boring liaison project with the US office again. Which means sitting up half the night to go over some tedious shite. I've got constant chronic jet lag without leaving the bloody house.

Admittedly it's not hard to eff my sleep up.

Grump emoji.

I pretty much always sleep right through, from 11 ish until 6. I’ve got a great mattress I put effort into buying to make sure it was right, and high quality, cooling pillows/duvet, and linens. I also - controversially! - sleep with blinds open so natural light helps name to wake up.

showeringthisaft · 30/07/2024 07:33

No...since being perimenopausal I started waking at least twice a night for a wee, sometime 3/4 times.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 30/07/2024 07:49

I never used to but yes, I generally sleep through the night now unless I need a wee, but it only takes a minute or so to fall back asleep.

Dark room, white noise, fan and earplugs are what works for me, plus never checking my phone for any reason in the night.

notacooldad · 30/07/2024 07:52

I sleeep through.
i usually have tough job waking up!

ASwimADay · 30/07/2024 07:56

How much do you drink? You said you're trying to cut down? I only ask as I went through a phase of wine most nights and the nights I didn't it took me much longer to get to sleep and I kept waking up. This stopped when I cut the wine right down to once a week.

Smallngrumpy · 30/07/2024 08:44

From what I can remember, I have slept through twice since being a teen/adult and both were at the seaside.
I have come to terms with my bad sleep and even though I always wake up every1 1/2 hours or rarely 3 hours, i have enough sleep. I dont drink tea after 12 noon, I take magnesium , I have the room dark and as cool as possible(no window open though cos have hayfever), and fan/purifier on.
My whole family are bad sleepers, so Im fighting genetics. But Im rarely tired in the day and only need about 6 hours, so 4 periods of sleep.
You need to play with your routine, look at screen use before bed, try earlier or later , use white noise/fan, dont drink too much caffeine.
The game changer for me was a pillow between my knees. Dont know why but it stops me waking with a bad bad and I love the soft squishy sensation.

FearMe · 30/07/2024 08:46

If you're over 40 it could be related to depleting hormones. So hrt or magnesium, or both, are worth investigating.
