Does anyone sleep through from night till morning? Frustrated!

I just cannot get a good stretch of sleep (unless I've been drinking!) Last night, I must have woken up every half an hour. I've tried night time gummies, lavender spray on the pillow. I only have one cup of coffee a day (in the morning). Is there anything else I can try? I'm really trying to reduce alcohol intake, so trying not to resort to wine to make me sleepier (although that works like a charm when I do). Do lots of people sleep right through the night?

Sorry but yes. I sleep from half 10ish right through until about 8 when my alarm goes off.

I’ve always been this way and hoping it keeps up as I get older.

I don’t drink coffee at all and very rarely drink so I don’t know if that helps.

I sleep just fine. My bladder however has other ideas. I wake when my bladder wants to be emptied, anytime between 3:00 and 6:00. Mostly, I can go back to sleep until about 9:00 (I'm retired, it took me five years to stop waking at 6:00). Which is fine. But I'm not keen on being ruled by my bladder.

MattSmithsBowTie · 29/07/2024 20:05

Yes, I always sleep a solid 7-8 hours.

I go to the gym before work and do plenty of exercise through so I’m tired at night.

I also find having some background noise like music or TV on of something g I’ve seen a million times before helps, I can’t sleep in silence.

Yeah I do, I'm lucky. I sleep next to my 1 year old and it's a squash with DH in the bed too but I still zonk right out for eight hours so I am really lucky. The thing for me is lack of stress. I am WFH right now and stress has reduced and sleep has really improved. The minute I am stressed, I am up a lot in the night.

SaladOftheCentury · 29/07/2024 20:16

No I've always woken up during the night between three and four am. Even before children and now they are older. It's nothing spooky, must be the way my body clock ticks. It's become normal. I was great with night feeds because I was already used to waking up during the night. I function fine during the day.

youmovedwell · 29/07/2024 20:30

Magnesium tablets. Absolute game changer. I still occasionally wake up during the night (for a wee, or a drink of water) but when taking these can drop straight back off again.

FourForYouGlenCoco1 · 29/07/2024 20:35

I wake relentlessly (always have); it drives me crazy. Things that have improved my sleep: noise-masking earplugs, separate quilt to DH, and more recently we’ve moved to two single beds pushed together.

I’ve recently started taking NMN in the morning, and in addition to many other benefits, I’ve noticed I’m sleeping much better. Only exception is around my period, when my sleep is just appalling generally.

Doggymummar · 29/07/2024 20:39

The Dr has prescribed me the Sleepio app, which seems to be helping. I usually manage 3:45 and had 5 on Friday and Saturday night. You can download it free on the NHS website.

GameOfJones · 29/07/2024 20:40

I normally wake once in the night to go for a wee but not always. What really helps me sleep well are loop earplugs and an eye mask plus keeping the bedroom cool.

Hibernatalie · 29/07/2024 20:58

Magnesium supplements?
I sleep through. I have basically good sleep hygiene, but probably just lucky.

kitchendiscotime · 29/07/2024 21:06

For me the magic combination is:

2mg melatonin
1/2 Sleepeaze tablet
Silicon ear plugs
A black silk eye mask
Fan on low

This gives me 7 hours uninterrupted sleep. But I have young children so usually get woken up anyway.

halfpasteleven · 29/07/2024 21:06

Just wondering how much magnesium people are taking to have a good nights sleep? I tried 500mg but it didn't work for me.. thanks

peachgreen · 29/07/2024 21:09

I was genuinely shocked when I discovered – only recently! – that there are people who sleep all night through. I have never, ever, ever done that. I assumed I was normal.

Have you tried vaginal oestrogen?

Peonies12 · 29/07/2024 21:12

Yes for my whole life, until getting pregnant. Definitely don’t use alcohol, it will help you fall asleep but not stay asleep or get quality sleep. Magnesium can help, also plenty of exercise, cool room, no phone before bed, I always wear ear plugs.

TimesaChangeling · 29/07/2024 21:20

Another one echoing the magnesium and I take Kalms as well. Alcohol is terrible for sleep. You might think you’ve had hours of sleep but it disrupts the rem cycle completely so you don’t get any good sleep at all, plus it sends cortisol shooting upwards which will make it all worse the next day (sorry, I’ve become a bit of a bore on that).

DelilahBucket · 29/07/2024 21:23

No but it's worse if I've been drinking and then don't. I have bedtime tea made by Yorkshire Tea which does help me feel tired.

CharlTen79 · 29/07/2024 21:35

Magnesium was an absolute game changer for me! I sleep right through now.

Also not eating too close to bedtime, a 20/30 minute walk in the evening, ear plugs, white noise, try putting your phone down earlier in the evening (I read before bed, but I know it’s not for everyone!), hot shower before bed.

hope you get to the bottom of it OP, nothing worse than rubbish sleep!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 29/07/2024 21:39

Sympathy OP- since starting peri menopause a few years back my sleeps always buggered to some degree and all that changes is how.

Since Christmas I'm finding most nights I drop off fairly easily but wake for a wee around 4pm then struggle to get back to sleep properly after. Not helped by my super hero sense of hearing meaning I can hear a caterpillar fart in the next county so once neighbours start going out to work around 5.30 I'm stuffed Confused

It's crap

I've slept through from night till morning on one occasion in my whole life that I can remember, and that was 36 years ago when I was a teenager. I vividly remember my shock at waking and it being morning.

I'm the same. A couple of years ago, I slept for 8 hours, not waking till 7.45... I felt absolutely fantastic and thought to myself... "so THIS is what people who sleep well feel like every single day. Lucky lucky lucky"

Bobbotgegrinch · 29/07/2024 22:07

Counterintuitively, it's probably the booze.

If I've had a couple of weeks of drinking too much, then it's the nights I don't drink that I sleep badly. And it takes a couple of weeks of no alcohol before I start sleeping properly sober again.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/07/2024 18:25

I use Feather and Down sleep butter - it contains magnesium, lavender and camomile. I used to have awful insomnia, and my sleep is so much better now - I still have some bad nights, but the improvement is immense.

I was imagining that was something to eat but just googled. I love body butter so will give that a try - don't think I've slept through in the last 20 years .

TheShiningCarpet · 29/07/2024 22:12

yep right through average 8 hours

i use a CPAP, and am also on hrt - progesterone is a sedative (although I really could do with a livener!)

i sleep alone, dark room, no tv, meditation to drift off, sunrise clock, weighted blanket, room is kept cold as possible, no alcohol before bed except on rare occasions

TonTonMacoute · 29/07/2024 23:16

Used to when I was younger, haven't really since I had DCs. It got really bad during peri menopause and is now better again.

I actually found the worst thing was getting frustrated about it, now I just assume I will wake up and have something ready to listen to to help me drop off again. Sometimes I sleep right through and that's a nice bonus.

spikeandbuffy · 29/07/2024 23:17

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea the whole feather and down range smells lush
It doesn't help me as I'm a chronic insomniac but it's very relaxing

I don't wake up once I'm asleep, I just can't get to sleep...
