Depends on the school? My local comp probably quite different to Eton or Harrow

frozendaisy · 28/07/2024 21:39

Don't give two shakes of a lamb's tail what social class they are, or anyone on mumsnet thinks they are as long as they are a decent leader.

AppleKatie · 28/07/2024 21:39

Tiny primary versus massive secondary also makes a difference.

also family background, parents occupations, spouses occupations and own education all play a part.

’headteacher’ is not enough of a decider.

frozendaisy · 28/07/2024 21:40

Eldest head is military class
Youngster teddy bear class

Both super heads

Twistybranch · 28/07/2024 21:41

The job of headteacher doesn’t imply any class. Your class in this country isn’t defined by job.

  • parents class
  • accent
  • schooling

These just some of the many many things we judge others in terms of perceived class

TigerOnTour · 28/07/2024 21:41

Middle

5byfive · 28/07/2024 21:47

Working class until they can afford to give up work and live comfortably off other people’s efforts (a pension 1.5x above min wage), then middle class.

Middle class isn’t an income level it’s a someone else providing the income status (usually owning a business). Benefits don’t count but they probably should.

Could be any class. It would depend on their background I would think.

'Discuss' is right up there with 'Reader I...'

The 2 things guaranteed to have me leave a thread

FoodieToo · 28/07/2024 21:52

Have you any idea how antiquated and odd you sound when you talk about class ???? Never fails to surprise me . Second or third thread in as many days .

If you asked that in Ireland you would be shamed and laughed out of it !!!

Stop trying to put people in categories. It's so weird .

BeaRF75 · 28/07/2024 21:53

State school or minor private school = middle
Public school = upper middle

ToniGreen · 28/07/2024 21:54

What a wank thread. Discuss

Job is exactly what class is based on!

Noraise · 28/07/2024 21:56

Who gives a fuck so long as they’re a good leader and the right person for the position.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 28/07/2024 21:56

In my experience, UMC are people who really don't need to work and live off mummy and daddies money but without the gentry link of the upper class. I think a headteacher could be working class or middle class but not upper middle

Not in the UK. In places like the US maybe

Yup. Always makes me want to say “No. Fuck off.”

lucieinlondon · 28/07/2024 23:30

I think headteachers are upper middle class, since their role is managerial.

Class is generally based on your parents' job or situation rather than on your own.

Not exactly. You could be an entrepreneurial millionaire but still be considered working class in Britain.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 29/07/2024 02:08

The question indicates a lack of understanding of what 'class' is.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/07/2024 02:18

There is so much more to it all, it is so not just about the job.

This. What is this obsession with what social class people are on MN? Why does it matter? Isn't it time Britain moved away from this nonsense.

Pisses me right off. Just ask the question, don’t bark orders.
