First lovely Sunday in ages... and the jet washers are out in force!

Beautiful day out, bees buzzing birds singing and thought I'd read my book in the garden.
Five minutes later 3 neighbours decide to bloody jet wash their drives and cars. Arghhhh!!! I hate that noise.

Why can't all noisy power tools be banned on a Sunday like they are in Germany?

No one can be arguing for conserving water in the UK after the last 3 summers? 😮. We've got an excess of water, hence all the sewage in our rivers and coastal areas. This is the year you can use as much water as you like, surely? Even I have stopped saving water like it's going out of fashion. Although (old habits die hard) I put the undrunk bits of water from water glasses into an indoor watering can for the house plants and turn the shower off when lathering up until it's time to rinse off. But overall lack of water is not a concern this year in the UK!

June was a very dry month though. Went for a walk today and the ground is looking very dry and cracked.

I was up early this morning to trim my bush but waited until the decent time of 9am.

My neighbour does his every Sunday morning from 9am in the summer. He must have a tardis garden as it is the same (small) size as mine but it seemingly takes TWO FUCKING HOURS every week.

Edited

I know - it's the time taken to do it - hours and hours and the pitch is just awful.

Electric hedge trimmers aren't so bad. It's the petrol powered versions that make me want to scream. Especially when they are cutting hedges in bird nesting season.

That's one thing you will need to do less off when you get older 😏

@LoneHydrangea I fantasise about him having a nasty power tool related accident.

😂😂😂

MermaidMummy06 · 29/07/2024 07:35

I call it the Summer Symphony. We're in Aus so it's hot & sunny by 5am in summer. This means people are out by 6am mowing, whipper snipping, leaf blowing car washing. One neighbour was recently resurfacing a car for painting. That one made me almost homicidal.

I swear they're on a rotation schedule too. As soon as one stops, another starts.

The law is 7am or 8am Sunday. But no one pays attention to it. I've had builders across the road at 5am before.

It's lovely & quiet atm. It's unnaturally cold & we can't cope, so it keeps people inside!! 😂

I couldn't cope with that at 5am 😱

Next doors kids seem to communicate via screaming. Starts about 7am and is constant all day. Doesn't normally bother me that much as I'm a parent and just suck it up. But today... nope!! OH PLEASE STOP THE SCREECHING!!! I dread to think how their poor mum feels! Maybe she's gone deaf??

Because many people work on most other days, and therefore Sunday is the one day people get to crack on with these jobs. I mean, it's not rocket science to be able to grasp that, surely ?

nobody in Germany works all week and then only has Saturday to do things. Obvs.

It’s no more selfish than expecting the world to revolve around you wanting a lie in or silence. If you choose to live next door to other people then I’m afraid you have to accept a certain level of noise. I think it’s selfish to expect people to make their lives harder by using manual tools just because you don’t like hearing electric ones.

There are very very strict rules in Germany about when you can make noise. 7am power washers (not on Sunday or public holiday) is probably ok. But there are quiet hours between 12 and 2pm, and you have to stop at... meh, can't remember, 7pm? In ye goode olde days you had to stop all the noise at 2pm on a Saturday too.

we, and most people in our village, tend to mow on workday evenings, or saturday at a push.

1questionfromme · 29/07/2024 12:42

I completely agree OP. Never a nice day here that isn't spoilt by someone firing up some gigantic electrical penis-extension. Drives me mad.

BurntBroccoli · 29/07/2024 13:13

All sounds very sensible @Brefugee
I usually cut my grass on a weekday evening too after work.

What are you on about? They can use the tools just not 8am Sunday morning. It’s about having some consideration for people who work all week.

NewName24 · 29/07/2024 15:20

But the OP wasn't talking about 8am.
She was hoping for the WHOLE of Sunday to be silent.
She did suggest using manual tools.

Rummly · 29/07/2024 15:23

Round here it’s dogs barking.

But that’s every day of the year. Not just the sunny ones. Every fucking day.

I imagine in Germany they’d be taken away.

Yes same problem here with dogs barking though I do seem to be able to tune that out more.
Poor things are probably left home alone all day or chocked out at night.

People make noise

The only way you get peace is a remote detached not near a road in land you own.

Yeah but there are some people who make more noise than others.
We have a neighbour who is running a business from his house so every weekend there is a powersaw going which surely is illegal?

Also neighbours who want to build continuous extensions when they live in a big house anyway.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/07/2024 08:46

Where I live every half nice day means hours of grass cutting, strimming, jet washing, hedge cutting and grass blowing. I'm honestly surprised there is anything green left.

I don't find this in other areas so I think there are a few noisy bastards who just can't cope with silence and birdsong.

blobby10 · 30/07/2024 09:00

I decided not to jet wash my patio on Sunday - it desperately needs doing for safety reasons - because being on Mumsnet has made me realise how antisocial the noise actually is and it was a lovely sunny day! Is after work on a weekday (6,30-7pm) an acceptable time to mow my very small amount of grass?

Yes it's depressing that they want everything clean, neat and tidy outside when nature needs the opposite.

Those Changing garden type programmes didn't help where every bit of grass and shrubbery is ripped out the fake grass and huge expanses of patio (that they feel must be jet washed as the garden is an extension of their house).

And to repeat - you shouldn't be cutting hedges with big chainsaws at this time of year as there are still a lot of birds nesting.

Why is it dangerous can I ask please? I've cleaned my patio using a bit of washing up liquid and a stiff brush.

I would say that's a perfect time to mow.
