First lovely Sunday in ages... and the jet washers are out in force!

Beautiful day out, bees buzzing birds singing and thought I'd read my book in the garden.
Five minutes later 3 neighbours decide to bloody jet wash their drives and cars. Arghhhh!!! I hate that noise.

Why can't all noisy power tools be banned on a Sunday like they are in Germany?

Are you religious @BurntBroccoli?
How was church? Or do you worship at home?

Clingfilm · 28/07/2024 18:19

Weeelll, maybe if we didn't have ancient Sunday trading laws (not you, Scotland...) people wouldn't have to spend Saturday at the shops and Sunday doing jobs, and in this country you absolutely make hay while the sun shines, the rain could be back any second...
Said tongue in cheek but I stand by it

LoneHydrangea · 28/07/2024 18:20

I feel your pain. Our next door neighbour spends every nice weekend day jet washing, strimming, leaf blowing and lawn mowing. His petrol lawn mower is knackered and goes put-put-put for the hours it takes him. When he’s not using something noisy, he’s SHOUTING into his mobile phone as he walks around his garden smoking.

They’re away currently and it’s bliss.

I fantasise about him having a nasty power tool related accident.

Gotthefanonagain · 28/07/2024 18:29

We have all sorts, mainly house music 😬
Last night there was a party nearby and the women were drunk and screeching, which in my opinion rivals the meanest of petrol leaf blowers.
I always laugh when I say to DH that next door trim their hedge obsessively. Sounds euphemistic.

Boredlass · 28/07/2024 18:33

I’ve never understood the need for Sunday to be silent. Millions of people work a Sunday. It’s just another day. Modern life is different nowadays

No I just hate the noise of 3 power washers going at once!
Plus the amount of water used for these things isn't great for the environment. Sometimes people do this for hours and it hurts my head!

Sounds awful!
My neighbour cuts his tiny lawn with a huge stinky petrol mower 2 or 3 times a week.
I'm sure the fumes can't be good for him.

If it had been a lovely Saturday then there would have been three power washers even in Germany.

I don't mind everyday noise, it's just the power tools.

My neighbour does his every Sunday morning from 9am in the summer. He must have a tardis garden as it is the same (small) size as mine but it seemingly takes TWO FUCKING HOURS every week.

People make noise

The only way you get peace is a remote detached not near a road in land you own.

This ^

I find incessant kids squealing and bouncing on trampolines annoying or the continuous thud of a football but it's acceptable noise as is mowing and jet washing

dudsville · 28/07/2024 19:05

It's been such a wet "summer". Getting a few days of dry weather has meant it's time to get some things done. I don't enjoy the sound of the stone cutting for a neighbour's drive, but they've waited ages to get it done so i don't begrudge them. For some reason, hearing neighbours mowing lawns makes me nostalgic. Doesn't make any sense, I guess it's from living in a city for 25 yrs from my early adulthood and this takes me back to childhood. The motorbike races are weird, that seems completely selfish to me.

WhereIsMyLight · 28/07/2024 19:07

DH mowed the grass earlier. It took 10 minutes. Toddler also had a tantrum in the garden earlier. Also probably for about 10 minutes. I know which noise I’d rather listen to but you can’t switch toddlers off on a Sunday.

Because many people work on most other days, and therefore Sunday is the one day people get to crack on with these jobs. I mean, it's not rocket science to be able to grasp that, surely ?

so unecessarily rude, dismissive, belligerent

Mumtotweensos · 28/07/2024 19:12

I used to live (and work FT 😂 for the flouncy previous poster) in Germany and it was bliss

I miss them

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/07/2024 19:20

It's unfortunate that we've had a horrendous summer and people are wanting to get garden maintenance jobs done all on the same day, but YABU.

My inlaws live very remotely in the countryside. They have to put up with the constant sound of chainsaws, farm machinery, crop spraying, the smell of the farmyard wafting across on the breeze, foxes screeching late at night and the wood pigeons cooing from 4am. Not to mention the pheasant and grouse shoots later on.

I'd rather put up with city noise. Even the aeroplanes aren't constant.

Hummingbird75 · 28/07/2024 19:21

Our neighbours used to do this and I used to wish he would stop, he has since dropped down dead and now I miss his mowing on sunny days. It is a strange world.

Hummingbird75 · 28/07/2024 19:22

It is very peaceful here, small hamlet, and so noise is rare apart from birdsong.

BerthaFlapjack · 28/07/2024 19:37

What is special about Sundays? Why have that day as a quiet when it is a time many people are free to do DIY and gardening?

I wouldn't start too early but it would never occur to me to be more quiet than usual on any particular day.

My neighbour cut his hedge noisily this morning because he wanted to get the clippings to the tip before it closed. Eminently sensible imo.

The water isn't great but it's far better than using harsh and often toxic chemicals to prevent hard surfaces from getting slippery.

Blisterly · 28/07/2024 19:45

God I love a jet wash!! Might get it out next weekend!!

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/07/2024 20:06

No one can be arguing for conserving water in the UK after the last 3 summers? 😮. We've got an excess of water, hence all the sewage in our rivers and coastal areas. This is the year you can use as much water as you like, surely? Even I have stopped saving water like it's going out of fashion. Although (old habits die hard) I put the undrunk bits of water from water glasses into an indoor watering can for the house plants and turn the shower off when lathering up until it's time to rinse off. But overall lack of water is not a concern this year in the UK!

Notaflippinclue · 28/07/2024 20:08

Bose noise cancelling headphones- sorted

PuttingDownRoots · 28/07/2024 20:19

While its true you can't do noisy stuff on Sundays in Germany (including hanging out your washing)... it is perfectly acceptable for a building site to start work at 6am, even in a residential area. Monday to Saturday.

It was also easier to buy a 6 pack of beer than a pint of milk on a Sunday.

And Carol singing at dawn, every Sunday in December... (I thought I was hallucinating that!)

Yes I bet it would be lovely just to have one day (any day!) without the sound of power tools.
