Sunbed etiquette

We're on holiday in Turkey ATM. We were at the pool first thing for about an hour, then went to the snack bar for an hour or so for some breakfast and left towels and our stuff on our sunbeds so we could come back to them (yes I know that's cheeky) but when we came back another family had taken the sunbeds next to ours and pinched one of ours - fair enough I accept we were being a bit naughty reserving it whole we weren't there BUT they just sat on all our stuff! Who does that?? The man was sitting his arse on DC's cap. Also they hadn't bothered to pull the sunbed across to join the rest of the ones they had and left it literally touching our other ones. This is weird right?
Why wouldn't you move the personal stuff - and the USED towel first? And why wouldn't you move it across so you're not in someone else's group?
It annoyed me so I decided to make them feel uncomfortable by sitting on the one closest to them until they moved it over away from our remaining ones. I also had to pull my son's cap out from under the man's bum!

to teach you a lesson

let’s be honest

you won’t be leaving all your stuff on sunbeds to trot off to breakfast again will you?

Itsrainingten · 27/07/2024 11:21

Ha I might! I sat close enough to the man that he felt uncomfortable until he moved the sunbed away.
It's weird. There were at least 5 or 6 other groups of free sunbeds they could have gone for!

so why the need for you to reserve?

frozendaisy · 27/07/2024 11:23

This doesn't sound like a holiday just parking spaces on a road by another format.

If everyone just accepted if they are vacant from the area the sunbed can be used by another guest the natural movement of people would mean there would be beds for people most of the time.

But yiu are adding to the problem OP.

Getting the hump and acting like a toddler.

In that case we need a diagram.

Honestly it wasn't really about the reserving. It was basically laziness and not wanting to carry our stuff. Although there was an element of "insurance" I guess.

Meh! I accept reserving is a dick move. I want really bothered they took the sunbed. Just annoyed they didn't move my son's hat before sitting on it. And I don't really get why they would t slide it across to their group. There was enough left that it wasn't a problem at all. I just got another one and moved it across so we had our 4 beds again.

This is why I'm so glad I have my own home abroad. Could not deal with sunbed "wars"....or other holidaymakers for that reason.

missshilling · 27/07/2024 11:34

It’s a pretty common one though. I was staying at a hotel recently and all the sunbeds close the pools were reserved or in the process of being reserved at 7am. The restaurant was virtually empty at that time so few if anybody was taking a break for breakfast.

StormingNorman · 27/07/2024 11:35

I think we need a diagram 😂

MidnightPatrol · 27/07/2024 11:38

This is why I prefer to rent a villa.

People always behave like dickheads when sun loungers are involved. Also a pain to pay to use a pool etc and then be unable to actually put your belongings down to swim as every last bed has been reserved.

Hotels should remove belongings from sunloungers if they have been left unattended for more than 30 mins.

Shityshitybangbang · 27/07/2024 11:45

The last time I went abroad some cf had actually put towels on her families sunloungers by the poolside. But also put more towels on another 4 sun loungers that were under shade. There were folk struggling to get a sun lounger as it was so busy. So rude
The best one I saw was security going around at breakfast taking every single towel of the sun loungers and placing them on the wall. So there was no reserving.

FrenchMustard · 27/07/2024 11:57

Nah sorry OP, you were the CF here im afraid (though he should have moved the stuff). Having recently just been abroad and at times struggled to find a sun lounger due to them being reserved for hours with no one using them, I find it pretty hard to be sympathetic!

Flossflower · 27/07/2024 12:00

Hats off to them. It wasn’t just laziness that you son left his hat there

AllBlackEverything · 27/07/2024 12:00

I don't think it's rude to leave your things whilst you just go for a quick breakfast at the snack bar. I think it's incredibly rude to sit on someone else's property. He could have at least removed the things.

What did you say to him?

Hadalifeonce · 27/07/2024 12:02

We were at an hotel a couple of years ago, there were signs saying that if sunbeds weren't in use after (specified time) any items would be removed.
We went to the pool after lunch, grabbed a couple of sunbeds we were there for over 2 hours when a couple started shouting at us for stealing their sunbeds. The staff were brilliant and pointed them at the signage.

I didn't say anything because he wasn't speaking English. Maybe Russian or Hungarian or something, I'm not sure.
Honestly it wasn't a big deal because there's loads of sunbeds left. I think it was really rude not to move the hat before he sat down, and weird to sit on someone else's used towel. I mean I could have had scabies or something for all he knew. But even now there are quite a few sunbeds. If they were the only ones available if have understood it. But even then id have thought it normal to move the stuff
And for all the people telling me off - I do get it. Sunbed blockers are dicks. I wasn't bothered he took the bed really. Just how he did it and sat on our stuff.

When we stayed in turkey there was a German family that came down in the morning and threw all the towels in the swimming pool that had been reserving sun beds.
And this was in the 90s.
Sounds like it's still frowned upon.

PinkTonic · 27/07/2024 12:10

Sorry but there is a world of difference between going to the pool, establishing your position and leaving the poolside later on for breakfast, lunch, to get a drink etc. v bagging beds at the crack of dawn and not coming down until later or bagging beds in two positions. If I’m using the bed then that includes breaks for food and drinks and I don’t move my stuff or expect some other cheeky fucker to sit on it. I could be in the pool for half an hour or more. Bagging beds and not using them for hours is dickish.

suburburban · 27/07/2024 12:11

I think it was rude especially sitting on your items

Ooh update... They left their towels reserving the beds. They've been gone for a while. Thought they were probably in the pool but wasn't really interested. Pool guy just came and moved their towels so now the beds are free again!

I prefer hotels and cruises that the staff move people's stuff after a certain amount of time (normally 30 mins). It makes it a much nicer experience. They normally put a card on the chair with the time stuff will be removed. Stops the CFs hogging all the sun beds.

This. This is exactly the etiquette
