If you owed £9.99 and made a transfer would you ….

….transfer £9.99 or £10?

I would transfer £10 in the same way that I would give a tenner in cash.

Depends on circumstance. I owed my parents £6 something but sent them a tenner as they often get me bits and bobs. Businesses I would send exact.

MouseofCommons · 26/07/2024 14:45

Business, exact amount.
Person, send a tenner.

Jollylollylee · 26/07/2024 14:50

In person I’d give a tenner and not ask for change as it’s easier all round but if transferring I’d be happy to just send exact figure.

Because why not and as pp said it’s easier for them to identify the amount.

RLouiseH · 26/07/2024 14:51

I’d do £9.99 if that’s what I owed.
Typing 9.99 is just as easy (if not easier? 🤣) as typing 10.00 so why would I round up?
I wouldn’t be doing it to be facetious, it's just, if that’s what I owe then that’s what I’ll send.

Im curious, what’s happened to make you ask this?

TheThingIsYeah · 26/07/2024 14:58

This thread reminds me of a course we did at work years ago and the teacher recommended a book to buy online. I offered to order them all in my name and when I collected the funds off one individual I remember going up to the trading floor and him scrambling around and giving me £9.87 in exact change. Why not just give someone a tenner? It just comes across as extremely tight. It must be tight the fact that I can still recall it all these years later.

Jollylollylee · 26/07/2024 15:08

Completely different situation as that’s cash and it is obviously way more of a faff to count out £9.87 for the sake of saving 13p when you could just hand over a crisp tenner!

However this doesn’t apply at all in the current scenario which is about a bank transfer.

bluecomputerscreen · 26/07/2024 15:10

exact amount
not least because the extra penny was a plot in one one of the superman movies

spikeandbuffy · 26/07/2024 15:17

Exact amount
I transfer money for netball weekly and that's often like £3.14 etc

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 26/07/2024 15:29

I don’t understand why you would round up for a bank transfer. The whole point of giving someone a tenner instead of £9.99 is because it saves them the bother of fannying about trying to find a penny that will probably just end up at the bottom of your purse. When there’s no physical penny involved, why would you transfer it?

Doggymummar · 26/07/2024 15:31

Exact 💰

Listentogold · 26/07/2024 15:34

Surely if you send £10 when you only owe £9.99 their account won't match up.
I use Xero and the invoices/money need to match correctly.

Nellieinthebarn · 26/07/2024 15:47

Depends who it is, very rich but tight as a ducks Uncle, £9.99 Lovely but hard up relative probably £10, and if they had to drive or put themselves out in any way, if it was to get shopping for me or something, probably £15. Any business - correct amount.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 26/07/2024 15:48

This is friends and family, obviously not businesses, clubs etc.
I always round up and my friend doesn’t. I like even, tidy numbers!

OP posts:
alwaysmovingforwards · 26/07/2024 15:51

I’d just type in the amount I owed.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/07/2024 15:58

I would do the exact amount for a digital transfer, except perhaps on Revolut because there are buttons offered for round amounts so it is slightly quicker than typing it in. It never occurred to me that the recipient could be annoyed/offended by that.

CreamCool · 26/07/2024 16:00

Either is fine

betterangels · 26/07/2024 16:01

Thingsthatgo · 26/07/2024 13:38

If it were to a business I would send £9.99. Not because of the penny, but as a business owner it helps me if the amount paid corresponds exactly with the amount invoiced.

This. I pay what's on the invoice.

WindsurfingDreams · 26/07/2024 16:07

I'd probably do the exact amount as I use a rounding up thing to help build savings.

I don't think I'd give much thought either way to 1p though

DisforDarkChocolate · 26/07/2024 16:09

Generally I'd transfer £9.99. If I was looking for a payment in I'd like it to be the correct amount. I'm self employed and random payments are a pain.

Bourneyesterday · 26/07/2024 16:10

9.99 is fine. It's what is owed. No need to round up for bank transfers. It would be like tipping someone a penny.

Redhairandhottubs · 26/07/2024 16:12

I've just asked 10 people to transfer £7.98 to me for their share of an event (hobby friends who I see every week). All of them have transferred the exact amount.

NeedToChangeName · 26/07/2024 16:13

Precise amount is easier to trace on bank statements if I'm checking who has (not) paid their share

Don't round up. Adding 1p doesn't make you look generous

DragonFly98 · 26/07/2024 16:19

£9.99 but in real life I would hand over £10 and obviously not expect change.

PetulantPenguin · 26/07/2024 16:23

£9.99 vexause its just as easy for me as typing £10.00. If it was xash probably the £10 note unless I was trying to shift a lot of change 😀

Likewhatever · 26/07/2024 16:34

It wouldn’t help me if someone rounded up, in fact it would be a bit of a nuisance. I like to reconcile incomings and outgoings and if the amounts aren’t the same I can’t.
