But I'm doing it because I've name changed and I'm curious

So a black woman has been charged for referring to a footballer as the n word to another black woman on twitter, why has she been charged? I would completely understand and agree if this was a white oerson using that word but she is also black. How does it work does anyone know ? I thought it was acceptable if you're of the same race (sorry for my blatant ignorance im genuinely curious)

It shouldn't be acceptable for anyone, of any race, in any context, to use that word.

Its an offensive racial slur, no matter what.

Billyballyboo · 24/07/2024 15:05

Either it's a racial slur and not permitted by anyone, including rappers etc, or anyone can use it. Although it's a vile term, I don't agree with banning words.

JusWunderin · 24/07/2024 15:05

I believe it’s only acceptable to and from consenting black people. If as a black person you don’t want to be referred to as the n-word (which is still an offensive word no matter who it comes from)

It’s all about consent. If your aren’t black, you have absolutely 0 right to use it. Black people can use it as they like, however if you’re going to direct it at a fellow black peer, you’d hopefully have cleared with them whether they mind being called it or not. She mustn’t have thought it through.

That’s my take. I could be completely wrong.

Izzynohopanda · 24/07/2024 15:07

If a word is offensive, then doesn’t matter who said it.

JusWunderin · 24/07/2024 15:07

Sorry, by acceptable I don’t mean acceptable but is commonly used amongst black people who aren’t offended using between eachother. My point is, just because they are black too, doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to be offended by an offensive word

Absolutely not. Not in any circumstance.

The law applies to everyone, irrespective of skin colour.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 24/07/2024 15:10

It's unacceptable.

PennyBob · 24/07/2024 15:12

I'm black and I don't care if my peers use it with each other. If they used it with a stranger, even if they were black, I'd die inside.

I actually don’t know what this means so can’t provide an answer 😂

I don’t believe it is illegal to say? Isn’t it just massively offensive? Unless the context was hate speech I guess.

titchenkable · 24/07/2024 15:17

Thank you, it's seen as acceptable between black people because you hear it in music, films etc. So I was shocked to see a black woman had been arrested for using it, but explained to me I do see it's the context it's being used in, is that right ?

Apolloneuro · 24/07/2024 15:27

Context is important in loads of cases.

Someone might jokingly call their friend a sl*g (I wouldn’t personally, but have heard it) but if they called their boss it they’d get into trouble.

Apolloneuro · 24/07/2024 15:29

You might find this interesting, OP. That word has particular cause for being so disgusting.

Surely saying language/behaviour is acceptable from one racial group, but not another is just racist?

Hadjab · 24/07/2024 15:35

As a black woman, I hate this word. Black people will tell you they've reclaimed it, much like Gay people have reclaimed Queer, but that doesn't sit well with me. I'm not about to bandy about words that were used to subjugate us for centuries.

That said, context here is key - it probably wasn't intended as a racial slur in the way a white person could use it, but hey, maybe she'll think a little harder next time.

It's quite a bit more complex than that. It's not the word that holds the power, rather the conditions under which it's being said.

Thirty years ago, if a heterosexual person used the word queer, would it have been homophobic? If a gay person had said it, would it have been homophobic?

I don’t think it is more complex than that. Allowing different racial groups to have different rights doesn’t work for me - non-white, South African background.
