How often do you go to the beach if you don't live by the sea?

We're not far from the furthest point in the UK from the coast. Our closest beach is a ~2 hour drive in good traffic. Holidays abroad excluded, I'd say we go to the beach maybe 3-4 times a year. This makes me feel a bit sad. I'd love to live on the coast and spend our summers on the beach.

If you don't live on the coast, how often do you go to the beach?

Never, unless I leave the country for a holiday.

Cakencookieobsessed · 23/07/2024 11:58

We go as a family several times throughout the summer holidays and sometimes during half term if the weather is nice. I don't drive but I've got 5 beaches that are about an hours train ride away so when we go we make a day of it.

Caspianberg · 23/07/2024 11:59

I grew up a 5 min walk away from uk beach. We hardly ever went as children, just the odd summer day.

My parents have lived there about 40 years now. They walk along the beach road as it’s the quickest route to town, but on the actual beach, maybe once a year when we visit with Ds. The sea is freezing and not that clean nowadays either so I doubt many go in the actual sea often

We live on the coast, never “go” to the beach. It’s manic on warm days. Do walk past often, though.

NewtGuineaPig · 23/07/2024 11:59

Maybe 3-4 times a year when we stay with family. I don't really get the appeal of the beach.

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/07/2024 12:00

I live in Scotland so whilst going to the beach is pretty - its rarely warm enough (not this year at all so far) to want to spend much time there. So almost never.

We are about 25 minutes drive from the nearest nice beach.

Spikylittleflower · 23/07/2024 12:00

Never, they are all disgusting and full of bacteria from sewage now. So many people we know who have gone to UK beaches in the last 2 years have got sick. Not worth it.

distinctpossibility · 23/07/2024 12:03

I live in the furthest point from the sea in England, 2 hrs 20 ish to closest the seaside. We have minibreaks of 1-4 nights at the seaside 4 or 5 times a year. Never been to Blackpool so will go there later this year - maybe not in the sea but on the beach. If we're at the seaside we always go on the beach even if just for a walk in waterproofs 😂

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 23/07/2024 12:03

I'm surprised by some of the responses saying people live on the coast but never go!

We live 25 mins from the nearest beach, but about 40 mins from one we tend to go to more as we prefer it. We go at least monthly all year round and at least once every couple of weeks in summer, often more.

Awful, isn’t it. Our beach has been clean enough for little grandson to paddle with his mum maybe three times this year, if that.
So many people just ignore the signs. Mad.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 23/07/2024 12:05

The grim aspects are what puts me off from making more of an effort. We usually go down to Brighton. The water is brown. The DC throw stones in the sea, race the waves, get wet and then we go home. On holiday, we have nice sandy beaches and crystal clear water.

Never, I'm more of a hills and moors type of person. Not much of that where I currently live either, so I travel for those rather than coast.

APurpleSquirrel · 23/07/2024 12:06

Our nearest beach is probably 30mins away by car - we go to various beaches throughout the year though, usually either the North Devon beaches (about an hour away) or the South Devon or Dorset beaches (40mins+).
Love a proper beach day when it's warm enough to go in the sea. But fossil hunting beach days are lovely too.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 23/07/2024 12:07

We’re also really far from the beach. We go once a year, if that. I do prefer walking by rivers or in woods to going to the beach though. We only go because the kids like it.

LydiaLinus · 23/07/2024 12:07

About 90 minutes away and like you visit maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

I'm not really a cooler weather beach type and often the coast is cooler, windier or with more mist than where we live.

I do love the ‘openess’ of the coast and like a good view. I have a favourite breakfast cafe overlooking the sea!

transformandriseup · 23/07/2024 12:08

I rarely go to the beach and I do live by the sea.

MartyFunkhouser · 23/07/2024 12:09

Our closest beach is about 2 hours away and probably somewhere grotty like Clacton. So never.

We holiday abroad as a rule.

Ohhownaice · 23/07/2024 12:09

I was going to say we must live close together but then Brighton :) I'm at a northerly two-hours-from-any-sea point.
We go every month or so (well, on non-school-holiday weekends) because it's a lovely weekend away or a day trip, now that we're getting too decrepit to go striding over the North Yorkshire hills.

Cobblersorchard · 23/07/2024 12:10

Once or twice a year to visit family. I’m not a fan though! We live very inland but I don’t like the sea particularly- don’t mind an occasional visit but wouldn’t live there.

My parents on the other hand absolutely love the coast. I prefer hills and dales.

Imnotarestaurant · 23/07/2024 12:10

Very rarely, we don’t live by the sea and spending hours in the car then struggling to find a parking space doesn’t make it an appealing day out. I love the beach and if we can find a cheap hotel or b&b we will go for 2 days/1 night but it’s been a few years since we’ve done that.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 23/07/2024 12:13

Our actual nearest beach is Southend but it's a PITA to get to.

OvertiredandConfused · 23/07/2024 12:15

I love being by the sea, but that’s not the same as going to the beach! We’ll walk along coastal paths, sit on benches on the cliffs above, that sort of thing. I find being by a large expanse of water soothing when I’m stressed or low.

RuthW · 23/07/2024 12:16

Once a year when Dd little. Never now

PuppyMonkey · 23/07/2024 12:22

Haven’t been to a beach in donkey’s years - see what I did there? Grin
It wouldn’t even be on my radar tbh, there are far more interesting things to do imho.

Moier · 23/07/2024 12:25

We live an hour and half away from the east coast.. we go every other weekend in all seasons.. we combine it with a car boot sale sometimes.
Sister takes her dog for a run.
We have lunch there.. we enjoy the drive out.. but both retired.
