How often do you go to the beach if you don't live by the sea?

We're not far from the furthest point in the UK from the coast. Our closest beach is a ~2 hour drive in good traffic. Holidays abroad excluded, I'd say we go to the beach maybe 3-4 times a year. This makes me feel a bit sad. I'd love to live on the coast and spend our summers on the beach.

If you don't live on the coast, how often do you go to the beach?

We live about 30 minutes from 10 or so different beaches. We go every 2-3 weeks, pretty much all year round.

we're in Manchester, we have been to formby a few times but it's hard to park as it gets busy. If anyone has any good recommendations for alternatives, let me know, please. I have dogs who would love to have a run on some sand. We usually only go to the beach on holiday in wales or scotland. I can't swim and my partner burns easily so we are not natural beach people. I prefer them in winter!

We’re an hour from the sea in all directions (there is a coast to the north and one to the south and we are dead in the middle). I’d say we go once a month, sometimes more. I love it and I’d go more if I could justify the travel.

There is nothing more uplifting than a walk along the beach.

I don't sit on the beach and I don't swim in the sea in the UK but I love the sea. We are 90 minutes from a decent beach and go maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Also go on beach holidays abroad 3 times a year.

I live in Leicestershire so about as far away from the beach as you can get in England and usually only go on holiday to the beach (Devon or Cornwall) once a year. However this year, due to a child moving to Bristol I've actually been to the beach more often - Exmouth, Minehead (eeuugh) and Weston super Mare (eeuugghh!) - , plus the whole of last week in Cornwall which was heaven.

Strokethefurrywall · 23/07/2024 14:47

I live in the Caribbean across from the beach and I go about 2-3 times a year and that's usually when someone else comes up with the idea.

And of course every time I go I say "we should do this more often" but never do.

Used to go all the time when I first arrived and when kids were little, but the appeal has worn off since they're 12 & 10.

I don't lie by the pool either and it's outside my back door.

longdistanceclaraclara · 23/07/2024 14:52

We're about an hour and half from the beach, and we have family living at two of them so quite a lot. I love the beach. We go all year round.

Live less than a mile from a huge pristine beach in Northumberland, don't recognise the descriptions on here, the water is blue and clear here unless there has been a huge storm. Go almost every day, often see dolphins, masses of bird life- including a spoonbill atm ( which is rare in the area) and a Minke whale last weekend, it's my happy place, could never live inland.

tinytemper66 · 23/07/2024 15:02

I live by the beach and confess I don't go there as often as I feel I should. I can see the sea from my house(from the mountain looking down.) So about 10 mins drive.)

friggingnora · 23/07/2024 15:05

35 mins drive from some large wide beaches. I wouldn't go there to spend the day bit we take the dogs up for a walk about once a month.

Sounds beautiful. Can we come and stay at yours?

I go rarely - live 40 minutes from the nicest one which I occasionally go to for a walk, but it's not as nice as the ones I go to on holiday (UK). Also the roads get rammed. If I lived somewhere less busy I might go more. I prefer doing other things when not on holiday, that involve fewer traffic jams.

EBearhug · 23/07/2024 15:35

Grew up about 7 miles from the sea - used to go down for a swim every day after school/work from about May-September, as long as weather or other appointments didn't conspire against us. Similar, when I lived in Bournemouth, I'd go down for a swim most summer evenings if not working or going out.

I'm now an hour away, and I'll still go down after work in the longer days - my office, which I have to go to once a week, is on the coast (probably wouldn't have gone for the job if it had been an hour in the other direction.) I was back home seeing schoolfriends at the weekend and went in twice st West Bay and Branksome.

It's also good to walk along the beach when it's too cold to swim (I am not an ice swimmer.) So I probably go down every couple of months in winter, too. It depends what else I'm doing - if I'm back home to catch up with friends, the very least I like to do is drive along the seafront, but it will depend on spare time.

YouAndMeAndThem · 23/07/2024 15:48

We live in a seaside town in Scotland. The water and beach are extremely clean, we go all the time in spring and summer, after school for a play or a walk, paddling and picnics, fish and chips or ice cream. We are lucky to live in a reasonably quiet place with good weather. Dreading the news getting out 😂

Definitely less in autumn or winter but we often go for walks when the weather isn't awful, or the wind isn't too bad. It's often the wind that stops trips to the beach, even in warmer weather.

Hibernatalie · 23/07/2024 15:59

I live in London. We go on holiday to beach places every year for about a week and on top of that maybe 2 or 3 times we go somewhere like Brighton.

CrushingOnRubies · 23/07/2024 16:08

Live 20 mins away and go as much as possible in the off season to walk the dog. To actually go and sit on the beach with a book and sunbathe very rarely considering

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 23/07/2024 16:14

At least 3 times a month- nearest beach is about a hour away - dogs love being in the sea. We also prefer when it’s raining as there’s hardly anyone there!

Toughmonkeys · 23/07/2024 16:57

It's a 20 minute drive to our nearest beach and have lots more if we drive 30 to 40 minutes. We go at least once a week to swim or play or do sports from spring to autumn. Not so much in winter.

QueenWenceslas · 23/07/2024 20:31

Never. I’m a Brummie. I love beach holidays abroad but I don’t enjoy going to the coast in this country at all.
