There's are 100 locusts inside this bag. There is card inside egg box type. But the locusts are not in anything in the bag they are loose in there. So how am I going to open it without them ending up all over the place.

Um, why do you need to open a bag of locusts?! Burn it. Burn it with fire!

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 23/07/2024 11:37

This is not what I expected when I clicked on this thread.

Oh, x post

KievLoverTwo · 23/07/2024 11:38

Assuming this is for feeding a reptile or something. Other people must have had similar, I bet you can find a method on YouTube.

Moonmelodies · 23/07/2024 11:38

Scissors?

SoupDragon · 23/07/2024 11:39

Where do you want them to end up?

are they the sort of thing that will go dormant if put in the fridge for a while?

CopperNanoTubes · 23/07/2024 11:39

Make or buy a still air box?

GoingRoundInOvals · 23/07/2024 11:39

Is it cruel to freeze them? Like you would a lobster? Then after a few hours can open the bag and separate

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 23/07/2024 11:39

Think you’re supposed to pop them in the fridge for a while - slows them down til they warm up again.

Ginkypig · 23/07/2024 11:40

Tie something just below that tie then cut the original one off

once that’s done when you want to open it you have more chance of control

put entire bag in clear plastic box with pre made air holes then when you need one gently reach in after they have come out of the bag

They probably have a pet that eats locusts.

Put them in the fridge for 5-10 mins, it'll slow them down. They're pretty slow and daft anyway!

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 23/07/2024 11:42

I think I’d make some air holes in a plastic box big enough to put the bag in. Then put the bag in the box, lid on the box with the end of the bag sticking out. Cut the end of the bag open, push it into the plastic box and push the lid shut. Would that work?

loudbatperson · 23/07/2024 11:43

I would cut the end off, keeping it sealed by folding over and holding the end down.

Place the bag into container you will be storing the locusts in, open end down, keeping it held closed. Let go of open end and rest the lid on top with the sealed end of the bag outside. Jiggle the bag and pull it out, tipping out the locusts, keeping the lid a jar as little as possible. You will end up with a couple of stragglers in the bag you will need to add in by hand.

They don't tend to just fly off instantly so you should be fine.

The above is the sort of method we used when we had a lot of praying mantis.

ThisZingyBlueFish · 23/07/2024 11:44

We refrigerate to make them slower, then decant a few at a time into a snap lock bag, shake with vitamin/calcium powder and feed into dragon tank.
Remainder goes into a plastic container with holes in top and back into fridge.

WitchyBits · 23/07/2024 11:50

Ex reptile breeder here.

Put the bag into the fridge for 5 minutes. Then gently shake it so they are all at the bottom. Scoop some out, into a tub and seal the lid. Reseal the bag. For long term storage you need a clear plastic tub that will fit in the fridge to induce a torpor before opening. . Put a few holes in the box for air and add fresh veg to gut load the insects.

Thicktok · 23/07/2024 11:51

Thank you i will get a large plastic container with a lid.

For ease you can actually buy a special cricket keeper tub with removable tubes but they are overpriced.

The little bastards will escape regardless though no matter how careful you are. May be worth investing in a colony of Dubai cock roaches add they are easily contained in a tub with Vaseline around the inside rim. They breed prolifically and after the initial set up and will provide you with free insects that live off veg scraps.

WitchyBits · 23/07/2024 11:55

Also the law of the internet says if you say you have a pet you have to pay the tax. Photo please 🥰

Thank you . So I only put them in the fridge for 5 mins. To make it easier to transfer to smaller containers?

For longer term storage. I don't (keep) them in the fridge do I?

This has been quite an education. People keep live locusts in their fridge 😱😱😱 it's bad enough walking past them in the pet shop.

AlarminglyAwful · 23/07/2024 11:57

This has properly made me laugh, the idea of opening the bag and a hundred locusts swarming out has really tickled me. (In a slightly horrified way)

You need one of those plastic tanks from a pet shop surely? Then open the bag inside it? Obviously it probably won’t contain all of them but better than just having loose locusts!
