The Pull Of Temu!

RabbitsRock · 22/07/2024 21:34

My name is RabbitsRock & I am a Temu addict! Just ordered yet another dress for under a tenner(currently wearing the same one in a different colour & I love it) plus some army green combats with patch pockets also under a tenner. The website pops up & it’s like Aladdin’s Cave. Need to stop buying “gold” rings though as some of them look like kiddies toy ones! Had some really pretty silver ones though. Also had a couple of watches, some Taylor Swift bits for DD15, cushion covers including beautiful peacock design ones, really cute mini light up glass globes with carvings inside ( one is a rabbit looking up to the stars) & a tiny bronze effect bunny ornament. Anyone else had some nice things?

No. Just why would you?

DavidBeckhamsrightfoot · 22/07/2024 21:36

I was lucky that I'm always slow on trends and saw the appalling human rights violations that are happening in Temu and Shein including the horrific child exploitation so I never went.

DwarfBeans · 22/07/2024 21:38

Slave labour. Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

GiantHornets · 22/07/2024 21:41

I haven’t even looked at Temu or Shein. I wouldn’t buy crap made by slave labour.
I’m also getting rid of clutter. Nobody needs light up glass globes.

halava · 22/07/2024 21:42

I doubt that many mass produced items/clothes in physical stores (that also have an online presence) are squeaky clean from a production point of view either.

I feel the same about high end "labels" too. How do I know that £5k handbag was not made by exploited workers in some hell hole? Does anyone?

Those of you who think you are buying "ethically" are often being conned and pay high purchase costs for being brainwashed into having a so called Fashion Conscience.

Buy on Vinted or second hand every single time. But I doubt there are many who do that all the time either.

Theunamedcat · 22/07/2024 21:44

Yes but I managed to break away it helped when they made the games impossible to win on before thst I won rucksacks clocks and allsorts

DelilahBucket · 22/07/2024 21:45

Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Aside from your data being the most valuable thing you give them, there's the exploitation, and the amount of Etsy designers who have stuff ripped off and sold on there to such an extent Etsy remove their listings saying they are selling cheap imported tat, is unreal! If someone is selling a cushion for 50p there's something very wrong at production level when it takes a good 5-10 minutes to make one. I do wonder how many people voted for Brexit and to support British made when they shop on crappy sites like these.

Keroppi · 22/07/2024 21:46

never tried temu
aliexpress, yes, i buy cheap headphones, mp3 players, thermal printer cameras & camera roll
instax mini film etc
random stationery, cube storage boxes, fake crocs/house shoes
I'd never buy anything like cookware, earrings or anything you could ingest
Full of forever chemicals/bpa etc. Wash your clothes before you put them on obvs

At least, unlike Temu, your average consumer isn't going to buy 20 high end handbags in every colour of the rainbow then throw them out when they break the following week.

I know what you mean, but I often feel that those who can purchase the 5k handbags have the same attitude to the bags that Imelda Marcos had with her shoes!

One in every colour, shape, size, latest design, you get the drift.

BackOfAsda · 22/07/2024 21:50

Absolutely not. I wouldn't buy cheap shit made by exploited workers. I'm also partial to keeping my personal details safe and not into data farming.

AndForAFortnightThereWeWereForever · 22/07/2024 21:51

What's Temu? Confused

Allthehorsesintheworld · 22/07/2024 21:51

Slave labour.
Shabby items polluting the world, ending up in landfill or shipped to Africa for disposal.
Every time you buy this tat it adds to the problem.
Refuse Reuse Recycle. It’s really easy.

Still of little comfort to the kids making them in appalling conditions.

If you buy anything online or interract with any entity you leave a footprint. Data mining is everywhere.

Blackcats7 · 22/07/2024 21:54

Much better to buy quality second hand stuff.

Figgygal · 22/07/2024 21:57

It looks like cheap shite op
Cheap shite made in awful conditions by an exploited workforce
No thanks

Do you live under a rock, in a cave, up the top of a mountain on Mars?

I'm pretty sure Google is still available in those places 😬😁

Oh I agree with you, though I'm not aware of any high end designers using Uighur and child slaves, would be a risky business decision given the scrutiny these days. I'm not going to insist it doesn't happen though, I wouldn't know.

But the Temu price point adds another level of grossness as it encourages overconsumption and a throwaway culture. Plus you absolutely KNOW they are paying their workers fuck all, or the stuff wouldn't be so cheap.

lightinthebox · 22/07/2024 22:07

I talk to someone who is always going on about her latest Temu purchase, I want to politely inform them how unethical it is to buy their products.

They are someone who refuses to work so I know it’s because it’s cheap, so don’t want them to think I’m judging them.

Garlickest · 22/07/2024 22:11

If I'm thinking of buying something cheap, either from a UK retailer or a marketplace like Etsy or Amazon, I back-search it first. The products quite often turn out to be available on Temu or AliExpress for half the price or less.

If I still want it after a tussle with my ethics, I order it from China.

Op as everyone said those products are made by Uyghur slaves who the Chinese government ripped part from their families and put them in a factory to "educate" them. Trapped, tortured, forever making little handbags, not getting paid not seeing sunlight, ever.

Bananalanacake · 22/07/2024 22:43

When I read stuff like this about them taking bank details I don't feel such a twat for being 48 and still not knowing how to put my card details on the internet to buy things, always seemed like too much faff, I get my shopping buzz from charity shops.

FattipuffToThinnifer · 22/07/2024 22:57

Pleased to say I’ve never bought anything from Shein or Temu. Parts of Amazon are bad enough

I’m at a stage in life though where I don’t want to buy stuff anyway. I’ve been concentrating on “using things up” to reduce the amount I own - toiletries, consumables, books and so on; using to good china and glasses whenever I want rather than keeping then for special occasions, and wearing my clothes till they fall apart or cannot be mended any more. I’m not at an age for it to be “death cleaning” but it feels good not to be wasting resources!
