The Pull Of Temu!

RabbitsRock · 22/07/2024 21:34

My name is RabbitsRock & I am a Temu addict! Just ordered yet another dress for under a tenner(currently wearing the same one in a different colour & I love it) plus some army green combats with patch pockets also under a tenner. The website pops up & it’s like Aladdin’s Cave. Need to stop buying “gold” rings though as some of them look like kiddies toy ones! Had some really pretty silver ones though. Also had a couple of watches, some Taylor Swift bits for DD15, cushion covers including beautiful peacock design ones, really cute mini light up glass globes with carvings inside ( one is a rabbit looking up to the stars) & a tiny bronze effect bunny ornament. Anyone else had some nice things?

When I read stuff like this about them taking bank details I don't feel such a twat for being 48 and still not knowing how to put my card details on the internet to buy things, always seemed like too much faff, I get my shopping buzz from charity shops.

I mean it doesn't make you a twat, but it's still good to learn.

Paypal for example is brilliant.

I find this fascinating. Have you ever tried an online shop and got to the point of entering your card details? I don't think it's something anyone needs to 'know' how to do, it's all laid out for you and easy to follow. It's also about 1000 times less faff than physically going places to shop.

So I agree with pp, it doesn't make you a twat but it's quite odd. The fear of technology and insistence that something's too hard without ever actually trying it is the sort of attitude I associate with my 80yo mother and her friends.

Never even looked at Temu, Shein etc, but I have seen a documentary about their ethics
I buy second hand for many reasons, environmental is only one

Elphame · 22/07/2024 23:22

Have never bought from Temu or Shein.

I like to sleep at night

What about theatre or concert tickets? Or flights? How do you pay for things that you can't get in a charity shop?

TimeForMyMonthlyNameChange · 22/07/2024 23:30

I’m addicted to the price adjustments! I check at least twice a day for my refunds

XenoBitch · 22/07/2024 23:36

All the people I know who use Shein and Temu don't just see the one thing cheap and buy it.. they end up buying endless tat on there because it is cheap and they have a FOMO.

TheFairyCaravan · 22/07/2024 23:37

Half the stuff on Amazon is also on Temu. When I want to buy toys, teethers, board or cloth books from Amazon for my baby Grandson (I buy from there because he’s 3hrs away so delivery is easy) I have to do a cross check because I don’t want him putting that stuff in his mouth. I, also, don’t know it’s safety checked. It’s a right PITA.

Snowflakeinsummer · 23/07/2024 00:24

Agree half the stuff on Amazon and EBay and bloody Etsy is from Temu/Shein. Bloody drop shipping etc.
Etsy feels worse because I want to buy handmade/ethical and half of it is Temu/aliexpress.

EmeraldRoulette · 23/07/2024 00:42

@RabbitsRock I remember you from the thread with the poster having a brilliant declutter and we all posted to say we were doing it too….

SnowFrogJelly · 23/07/2024 01:05

It's all rubbish and a scam

I have bought several things from Temu. None of it is rubbish and I’m pretty sure I haven’t been scammed.

It is a huge data mining opportunity for the Chinese government. Also, I would be wary of some things, especially clothes, after watching a C4 documentary that revealed that EU safety certificates were being forged and there were dangerous amounts of harmful chemicals present in some items. Jewellery and leather goods (including clothes) were highlighted.

The documentary looked at Shein, but I suspect Temu is similar.

I’ve given up on Vinted because every other item is Shein, it really shows that people aren’t holding onto their clothes.

But for every person selling on Vinted I dread to think how many others just throw away to landfill.

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 23/07/2024 08:21

Yep, after realising the sofa covers I was looking at on amazon were less than half the price on temu and from the same company

Hurlingnovice · 23/07/2024 08:26

As others have said I'm ethically opposed to Temu, Shein and Wish. I'm also using Amazon a lot less now because that's been flooded with Chinese resellers and it's getting more difficult to buy anything that's not been massively marked up and impossible to return.

NashvilleQueen · 23/07/2024 11:47

You can search by specific brand and it saves your searches. So mine are all set up for One Hundred Stars, Toast, Nobody's Child etc in my size and in new or very good condition. I never just browse through everything that's on there.

Imworriedagain · 23/07/2024 11:49

Two words - slave labour....
Never bought anything from Temu and not planning to. Makes me very sad when people do.

Is that thread still going? Love to see a good declutter 😂

Freysimo · 23/07/2024 12:00

The Temu ad on X drives me insane, keeps showing no matter how many times I click on "don't like this ad". I'm not their target audience and wouldn't dream of buying from them.

OneReformedCharacter · 23/07/2024 12:08

The sister company (pinduoduo) was banned from google play and Apple Store in china because they were actively installing malware onto users phones. The returns go straight into landfill and there's a high likelihood they’re using slaves. They put real designers out of business by stealing their designs. They have no safety standards to adhere to so they can make their cheap rubbish with anything.

if people can’t afford anything else that’s one thing (still not really ok) but these shein and temu hauls you see online make me sick - there’s no need for it.

There is always an alternative to buying cheap shit. People buy cheap shit because they believe the hype on social media that they "need" it. They don't. They need a few classic basics that wash well and wear well, you absolutely do not need a new dress and bikini and bag and flip flops for every day of your holiday.

Amazon is turning into a drop shipping site.

Bananalanacake · 23/07/2024 23:05

What puts me off is the one off payments in lots of places. I'm happy to use eBay as that uses my bank account directly and it's easy to use. I also read on another Temu thread on here that people often have problems with card details being stolen after they have ordered.

When I went to the theatre I would go into the box office and pay cash, waiting until the play had been on for a while so there was space.

Dh books my flight tickets. Thanks for encouraging me to give online shopping a go, I need to get over my hangups. But I won't bother with Temu. Wonder if La Redoute is good for clothes.

KenAdams · 23/07/2024 23:16

Yeah it's AMAZING - my favourite thing is paying kids 6p an hour to make my fake Stanley cup - bargain!
