Would you eat this or is it food poisoning waiting to happen?

Just served up dinner and husband remarked that chicken was frozen wasn't it? I said yes I chucked it in the oven on hot for 10 mins until it defrosted then chopped it up and pan fried it, now it's ready in fajita mix.

He's saying that's too dangerous to eat? I think it's fine? Turning to MN before poisoning my whole family?! 😂

As long as thoroughly cooked right thru id think its fine

Fintoo · 22/07/2024 17:45

I wouldn’t risk eating that. I’m pretty sure that you aren’t supposed to use heat to defrost chicken.

wildthingsinthenight · 22/07/2024 17:48

No. It isn't worth the risk.
You can't safely defrost chicken like that

Nooooo

offonawhim · 22/07/2024 17:49

I don't understand the issue? It hasn't been left at a danger zone temperature for hours for bacteria to multiply? It's been kept hot and cooked thoroughly?

YouJustDoYou · 22/07/2024 17:50

I mean, I would. And have for all my adult life. Not in the oven, but I defrost and then cook, always been fine. It's up to you obviously.

SnakesAndArrows · 22/07/2024 17:51

Presumably you didn’t leave it hanging round half cooked for a few hours? If not, it’s fine.

caggie3 · 22/07/2024 17:52

I've chopped and cooked from frozen before, but I had to do the oven first this time just for a few minutes as the chicken was all frozen together and I couldn't chop it

TheShiningCarpet · 22/07/2024 17:52

That is not how you defrost chicken

Comedycook · 22/07/2024 17:53

Im always really confused by this. Some supermarkets sell frozen chicken and others meats which say you can cook from frozen...but I always thought if you bought fresh chicken/meat, froze it, then you couldn't cook from frozen, you have to defrost first.

defrosting then cooking is not the problem of course you can do that but there are safe ways to defrost meat and most of the time they do not include sticking it in a hot oven beforehand

Scottishshortbread11877 · 22/07/2024 17:53

It will be fine. Bacteria won't survive at 200•

leeverarch · 22/07/2024 17:53

Of course it's all right. It's not like you put it in a cool oven for an hour to defrost. You did it quickly.

Sunshineclouds11 · 22/07/2024 17:53

No I wouldn't.

As pp, heats not meant to used to defrost

Izzynohopanda · 22/07/2024 17:53

If I heard chicken was defrosted in that way, I wouldn’t eat it, although I am particularly fussy about chicken (after severe food poisoning).

Spacecrispsnack · 22/07/2024 17:54

Yes I’d think that was fine if you went straight on to cooking it and you’re happy it is now cooked through.

caggie3 · 22/07/2024 17:56

Exactly what happened

  • got out freezer, 4 chicken breasts all stuck together in a big frozen lump. Couldn't chop it into pieces
  • oven was preheated to 180 for the nachos, so I chucked in there for a few minutes until it was defrosted enough to chop
  • chopped it once soft enough, was still frozen in centre so cooked it low and slow on the hob until all defrosted and then cooked on higher heat. All the right temp now I've checked every piece!

So, fine or faux pas? 😂

Then why is there a defrost setting on every microwave?

caggie3 · 22/07/2024 17:57

See I would of used the microwave but husband doesn't allow it! I always wondered what the point of it was if it isn't safe!

The only reason things may not be suitable for cooking from frozen is because they might not thaw and cook properly in the middle by the time the outside is cooked, and possibly over-cooked.

A it heats from the centre out
b it’s not a hot temperature

Perfectly normal in this house. And I understand how micrororganisms multiply.

HappyDane · 22/07/2024 17:59

It's absolutely fine to eat as long as it's got hot enough and has cooked all the way through. You can cook a whole chicken from frozen as long as you know how to properly do so.

The reason why it's not recommended is because too many people wouldn't have the faculty to cook it properly or to judge whether or not conditions for safety have been met.

Microwaves don’t hear from the inside out - they heat through the vibration of water molecules

Refugenewbie · 22/07/2024 18:01

Is there not something about the bacteria not being brought to a high enough temperature to kill it if you don't defrost it first?

I think you'll be fine personally but it's not technically the way it should be done.
