Would you eat this or is it food poisoning waiting to happen?

Just served up dinner and husband remarked that chicken was frozen wasn't it? I said yes I chucked it in the oven on hot for 10 mins until it defrosted then chopped it up and pan fried it, now it's ready in fajita mix.

He's saying that's too dangerous to eat? I think it's fine? Turning to MN before poisoning my whole family?! 😂

I think as you said it was thoroughly cooked through and the right temperature then it's fine. If it was like a whole chicken, then it might be still frozen in the middle when you try to cook it.
I'd be concerned it would be really rubbery though? How's the texture?

Talipesmum · 22/07/2024 18:04

It’s completely fine.

It would be not ok if you heated it up to defrost, left it for a while, then cooked it - the meat would have been sitting around at bacteria breeding temperature.

But you basically just got it progressively hotter until it was cooked. Started it off in the oven, and as it warmed, chopped it up and finished cooking it in the pan. So there’s absolutely nothing to worry about.

Care with defrosting is either needed if you might warm it up too much then let it cool or sit around at a warmish temperature, allowing fast bacteria growth, OR if you defrost very unevenly so that when you then cook it, you think you’ve cooked it through but some bits may be lurking and uncooked because it was an uneven temp when you started cooking it.

Neither of those are an issue here.

Microwaves don’t hear from the inside out - they heat through the vibration of water molecules

As in not like an oven with radiant heat from the outside only…which is what can cause issues with bacteria but a microwave on defrost doesn’t

Chicken breasts are ok cooked from frozen. It’s a whole chicken with a body cavity you have to defrost.
im a lifelong vegetarian so read up on it but have cooked chicken from frozen for my dogs for years , none have ever been ill from it.

OneBadKitty · 22/07/2024 18:16

People are weird about food safety. The chicken won't become dangerous because you put it in an oven for 10 minutes- bacteria takes time to multiply and grow- not 10 minutes.

You can cook chicken kievs from frozen so why not a chicken breast? The only relevant thing to make sure is that the chicken is thoroughly cooked and piping hot in the middle.

Someone I know thought Frubes would be dangerous to eat after being out of the fridge for 3 hours and threw them away- madness.

BCBird · 22/07/2024 18:19

It's an absolute no from me

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/07/2024 18:21

It's absolutely fine because it was quickly cooked through.

He's going to go hungry tonight, I suppose?

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 22/07/2024 18:22

I'd eat it

K0OLA1D · 22/07/2024 18:23

That would be fine

I cook from frozen all the time

Punkrockprincess · 22/07/2024 18:25

Currently have bacon defrosting in a sink of water to eat in about an hour.

I do this all the time and am still alive. It's fine op

Fleetheart · 22/07/2024 18:25

surely there are a lot of ignorant people on this thread? this will be absolutely fine, it’s cooked through in the pan. it’s only a problem if you have a whole chicken and you don’t heat it at a hot enough temperature for every molecule to be heated through.

Pipecleanerrevival · 22/07/2024 18:26

Sounds fine to me OP.

gentlemum · 22/07/2024 18:28

I definitely wouldn't, but if you do go ahead and eat it please report back if you did or didn't get food poisoning!

Totallywoah · 22/07/2024 18:30

No, you shouldn't use heat to defrost meat.

DayOff24 · 22/07/2024 18:31

I wouldn’t defrost it like that so no I wouldn’t eat it.

libertybonds · 22/07/2024 18:31

Of course it's fine. I don't understand why anyone would say it's not. You quickly defrosted it enough to cut into small enough chunks to be cookes it thoroughly. You then you cooked it thoroughly.

I honestly don't know how people think you should have defrosted it????

soupfiend · 22/07/2024 18:33

KittytheHare · 22/07/2024 17:56

Then why is there a defrost setting on every microwave?

Exactly this, my microwave defrosts and even after just a minute or so the item is warm/hot when defrosting

OP I would eat it, done this sort of thing myself all the time, also cook chicken from frozen, its no different to what you have done this evening

S1lverCandle · 22/07/2024 18:36

I wouldn't have an issue with this, and I've got food issues in general Grin

thebigchorus · 22/07/2024 18:43

Yep it's fine.

It's perfectly fine to use heat to defrost meat if you are cooking it immediately.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 22/07/2024 18:46

It'll be fine. No wonder we have so much food waste when you read some of the daft opinions on here.

Though I did just eat 3 chicken sausages for tea that have been out of date since Friday so I'm possibly not someone the mumsnet food police would trust 🙈

WonderingWanda · 22/07/2024 18:47

I vote for it will be fine!

dementedpixie · 22/07/2024 18:48

Yes its fine. You have cooked the chicken thoroughly. I leave my chicken to defrost on the worktop for hours and we haven't died yet either!

Threeboysadogacatandakitten · 22/07/2024 19:09

It will be fine. As long as it has been properly cooked right through you will be fine.

rainbowunicorn · 22/07/2024 20:04

It's fine. You went on to thoroughly cook it once it had started to defrost. If you had left it sitting for a couple of hours after the over part and then cooked it then it would be risky, but you didn't.
To be honest there are a lot of people.on here that are completely clueless about these things. They just parrot whatever the person before them said half the time.

Soakinguptherays · 22/07/2024 20:07

Absolutely fine. I regularly defrost either like that or in a pan of simmering water and no food poisoning yet! People get far too anxious about this.
