Creepy but not gorey films

If I liked the films The Sixth Sense and the Woman in Black and the book The Turn of the Screw, what other films would I like? I thought the Exorcist and Skeleton Key were alright too but I found the gore element of House of Wax yawntastic. I'm not squeamish so it doesn't really do anything for me in films or books and I can take it or leave it. Usually leave it because I feel like if there is gore then that's the main focus and there isn't much else going on. Not watched any horror in ages but have the urge.

Jacob's Ladder.

It's not even a horror, I don't know what it is, but it is deeply unsettling .

honestyISkind · 22/07/2024 02:34

The Babadook. Painfully well acted.

JellyTotsAreYum · 22/07/2024 02:36

It's an anthology and some are comedic but "Dead of Night" (1945) - the part about the ventriloquist really stands out. Think it's still on Channel 4 catchup (My4?).
Also if you don't mind something longer "The Singing Ringing Tree" an old East German series which had dodgy sets and a terrifying dwarf and scared the hell out of people of a certain age when they were kids..
Also "The Night of the Hunter" is brilliant. Apparently there's going to be a re-make (why? The original is perfection!)

Yes but again, not the newer remake.

The Gift ( version with Katy Holmes and Cate Blanchett)
Flatliners and What Lies Beneath are great movies. However I can't watch Flatliners any more as the cast look so young it's distracting( Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Keifer Sutherland

Interstellar was great. You are never sure where it's going and some of the concepts like time and ageing were disturbingly thought provoking.

Iloveeverycat · 22/07/2024 06:38

Definitely the Invisable man. Never seen a film like it.

Hurlingnovice · 22/07/2024 06:41

I watched Requiem for a Dream the other night, it's got some very adult themes but really gets in your head without being gory.

ILoveMoonDaisies · 22/07/2024 07:05

The Vanishing is intriguing and the ending is really sinister

StoatofDisarray · 22/07/2024 07:07

A Dark Song would fit the bill. It's about a mother who hires an occultist to speak. To her dead child. Irish director, filed in Wales. I love it.

BiggerBoat1 · 22/07/2024 07:09

The old black and white version of Rebecca is delightfully creepy.

Second Hill House and everything else by Mike Flanagan. Also second The Fog.

The 1980s BBC Greene Knowe - it's on youtube.

Mark Gatiss' Christmas stories.

Greene Knowe has been televised? I hadn't realised, is it faithful to the books?

Stumbleine · 22/07/2024 08:42

@XChrome definitely the 1980 one!

Wendycoping · 22/07/2024 10:58

Lake Mungo.

You're welcome.

Get Out was interesting.

It was brilliant and very different. We loved it.

Catsmere · 22/07/2024 11:14

Dead of Night.

HauntedBungalow · 22/07/2024 17:21

Dead of Night is fab. Similarly, Magic also has a ventriloquist dummy (plus Anthony Hopkins). First saw it as a child, and it is cracker. Never did understand why anyone is scared of clowns, in a world where there are ventriloquist dummies.

Since it's Halloween in a little over a week, I thought I'd bump this. So many suggestions, thank you everyone!

Despite it's reputation, the 1st saw movie is fantastic and not really gory. It's more of a thriller than a horror and a brilliantly executed one at that. It's only the later films that capitalise on the idea and shock factor

I agree, I've only recently watched Saw as I thought it was going to be a slasher movie.

Don't watch Blair Witch - the most boring film ever. Saw it at the cinema at the height of it's publicity. I was inwardly begging for them just to die and get it over with 🤣

Misery - now there's a film. You've probably seen it already though.

Firealarm1414 · 20/10/2024 04:37

Barbarian. Starts out as one type of movie and then turns into something completely different.

Vates · 20/10/2024 04:40

Definitely Session 9 and Lake Mungo which have been mentioned, both wonderfully creepy. I would recommend The Night House.

Sladuf · 20/10/2024 05:37

Great to see Session 9 mentioned twice! That is definitely a creepy film. I first got to know about that from someone mentioning it on a forum thread like this years ago. I watched it for the first time with a friend, who at times couldn’t watch the screen because it was creeping him out!

If you haven’t seen Carnival of Souls, which was recommended earlier in the thread, yet that’s another one really worth your time. Watched it for the first time a few years ago and it’s still creepy even for today’s standards.

A lot of the classics have been mentioned already - Don’t Look Now and Rosemary’s Baby especially and with Rosemary’s Baby being recommended, I’ve got to add Repulsion (1965) and The Tenant (1976) to complete Roman Polanski’s “apartment trilogy.”

Repulsion is a masterpiece. No spoilers for this one.

The Tenant is one of the best examples of psychological horror I’ve seen. Roman Polanski plays the main character, who moves into an apartment in Paris where the previous tenant tried to kill herself. He plays a very unassuming man and learns he’s surrounded by neighbours from hell, who complain about everything and accuse him of doing things he hasn’t done… or has he?

Others I rate in the category you’re asking about:

Burnt Offerings. Definitely inspired The Shining as far as I’m concerned. Superb cast - Oliver Reed, Bette Davis and Burgess Meredith are in this one.

The Sentinel (1977). Great cast including Burgess Meredith again! Another film mainly set in an apartment block in America with neighbours, who are not quite what they seem, although in this film they’re pretty nuts from the get-go.

The Watcher in the Woods. This is an overlooked Disney live action film made in the early 80s for older teens/adults. A family with 2 daughters move into a rural manor. Bette Davis plays the elderly neighbour whose daughter Karen disappeared in a chapel in the surrounding woods 30 years ago. It seems Karen is trying to make contact with the daughters.

The Blood on Satan’s Claw. An underrated British horror from the early 70s about a village set in 18th century where the young folk fall under the influence of a demon after a mysterious skull is uncovered. Weird and creepy in equal measure.

The Devil Rides Out. One of the best films Hammer made.

Mairzydotes · 20/10/2024 08:16

The Mothman Prophecy with Richard Gere, I found it creepy and it stayed with me for a long time .

The Fog

GameOfJones · 20/10/2024 08:39

The Orphanage by Guillermo Del Toro (little boy talks about seeing a ghostly child in the house and then goes missing). It's atmospheric and terribly sad but I thought it was very well done.

Shutter Japanese film but the US remake is worth a watch too. Mysterious woman appearing in photos.

The Others as PPs have said it's just a really good story.

What Lies Beneath this is a modern classic I think. Well acted and definitely creepy rather than gory..
