Creepy but not gorey films

If I liked the films The Sixth Sense and the Woman in Black and the book The Turn of the Screw, what other films would I like? I thought the Exorcist and Skeleton Key were alright too but I found the gore element of House of Wax yawntastic. I'm not squeamish so it doesn't really do anything for me in films or books and I can take it or leave it. Usually leave it because I feel like if there is gore then that's the main focus and there isn't much else going on. Not watched any horror in ages but have the urge.

Second Hill House and everything else by Mike Flanagan. Also second The Fog.

The 1980s BBC Greene Knowe - it's on youtube.

Mark Gatiss' Christmas stories.

The Visit, Blackcoat’s Daughter, The Babadook, Let the Right One In.

And yes to Rosemary's Baby. Very unsettling (with fabulous 60s fashions as well).

An old one, The Innocents. And Les Diaboliques. Has an ending that honestly sent shivers down my spine.

Ooh, and the (original) Stepford Wives (also an Ira Levin book, who also wrote Rosemary's Baby).

OP, The Innocents is an adaptation of The Turn of the Screw! Sorry, missed that earlier. Very good and creepy.

And this! Very Hitchcockian

I like the Insidious movies. Not seen the latest one though.

The conjuring and the conjuring 2.

Flatliners.

Primal Fear is an excellent film. Edward Norton is excellent in it and... I don't want to spoil it by saying anything.. but it has a moment where you just catch your breath... or at least I did!
It's not horror or supernatural but a very clever thriller. It's time I watched it again actually...!

The Orphanage.

If you like older films and films with a cult following, Carnival of Souls is my personal favourite. I've never seen anything like it.

Louise303 · 21/07/2024 23:58

If you like the sixth sense any other M night shyamalan movies except spilt and class i found these rubbish. Antebellum was very good hide and seek with Robert de Nero, case 39 with Renee zellwegger very creepy. The seventh sign with Demi Moore, half light with Demi Moore.

Misery

The original 1963 version of "The Haunting" is genuinely atmospheric and frightening. I haven't watched it for years, but just thinking about a couple of the scenes is enough to give me chills. It's in a different league to the remake.

79Helene · 22/07/2024 00:11

If you like Woman in Black then you'll probably like Whistle and I'll Come to You

(There's a more recent John Hurt remake too but I haven't seen it)

25thCenturyQuaker · 22/07/2024 00:15

Oh, and "Night of the Demon" from 1957, despite some dodgy special effects and a rather wooden central performance, is well worth a watch.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 22/07/2024 00:16

We just saw Longlegs at the cinema, it fits your brief and was quite good I thought.

MeinKraft · 22/07/2024 00:17

100%. I don't know why they remake films that are pretty close to perfect like that. It's not like they can improve them.

The 1980 one with George C. Scott, not the other one with that title with Angelina Jolie in it, I assume.
Yes, it's a classic.

The Night of the Hunter.

Mitchum is far more sinister than any modern day portrayal of a serial killer, and the fact the movie was made 20 years before there was really any such concept just makes it all the more fascinating.

Absolutely! He's terrifying in that. That was a tour de force for Mitchum.
