Where to go in Europe for two nights in August?

Dogtales79 · 21/07/2024 16:03

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Can only get away for two nights, three days with my 13 yr old dd and not the biggest budget. I would love rest and relaxation, she would love a bit of buzzy culture. Was thinking Barcelona but it'll be boiling in August but then it will be in most countries. Need to get something booked soon. Please hit me with your ideas - particularly if tried and tested by you 😊

Copenhagen - not super cheap, but a lovely city.

Perhaps one of the Baltic capitals? I have never been to one of those, but I would love to visit them in the future.

Montenegro

Krakow is lovely and so cheap to eat out. They have a big shopping centre, the Galeria Krakowska that she might like, and a trip to the salt mines is interesting. The main town square is lovely too, they had a lot of interesting little market stalls to look round.

With such a limited tine, I'd be using flight timings to help narrow the field.
Where does your local airport fly to that will get you there before lunch and leave early evening?

If your flight out is afternoon on day 1 and back on the morning of day 3 then you only have 1 day. There's a huge difference in what you can do with the time.

If you're near London then eurostar to Belgium (or NL) - Antwerp, Ghent etc.

Dublin

OneFrenchEgg · 21/07/2024 17:42

Ooh following as dependent on passport dh may be taking a teen for a long sunny couple of days. Great timing.

Sunnydiary · 21/07/2024 17:49

Nice

We went to Porto in August a couple of years ago.

Lovely, small city and didn't find it expensive.

MayoMayoMayo · 21/07/2024 17:51

Lisbon

BeaRF75 · 21/07/2024 17:55

Look at your nearest airport. If it's small, and only has a few destinations, then that will automatically narrow your choice. You need to spend the minimum time travelling for such a short break, so look at shortest possible flight times.

Saying that, what about Berlin? Copenhagen?

Or if you are in/near London, what about Eurostar? In which case, I'd suggest Amsterdam (as long as you both like art!).

PermanentTemporary · 21/07/2024 17:57

Stockholm.

But I've been, so would now choose Krakow as in the pp.

LoopyGremlin · 21/07/2024 18:06

Munich? Lots to see and do and football has now finished!

Grazianoscubanheel · 21/07/2024 18:09

Cheap flights to wherever your local airport goes to, usually something ex-Communist.

TheFairyCaravan · 21/07/2024 18:11

Cuitadella or Mahon. The cities are both beautiful and you could spend an hour or two on one of the nearby beaches

Mandarinaduck · 21/07/2024 18:16

Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam - all already mentioned but all would fit the bill. All buzzy cities but some lovely outdoor places if the weather is nice. I wouldn’t go to Barcelona in August.

ClarrieMia · 21/07/2024 18:18

Den Hague. City, with all it offers and a 10 minute tram ride to the beach, with white sands and great beach bars.

Very short flight from the UK, about an hour and fantastic public transport.

Only slight draw back is not med temperatures.

murasaki · 21/07/2024 18:23

Budapest, spas with out door pools, lots to see culture wise, nice food.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 21/07/2024 18:25

Nice? You can get the train to Monte Carlo. Only 20 -25 minutes iirc & beautiful views.
Belfast. Dublin. Derry.
Amsterdam.

Thetrickcyclist · 21/07/2024 18:33

Helsinki? Often a much warmer climate than the UK in the summer, it's a city with a lot of culture and history...small enough to travel around easily and there's a good tram network too. I've visited a few times from being an older teen to being an adult, and really enjoyed every time. We have stayed in Uni halls in Helsinki over the summer to keep costs down, they included a breakfast and use of the on site sauna...and we bought picnic food from the supermarkets to keep food costs more manageable

Or the Baltic capitals Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius - have been to all of them and loved them but it was too long ago to give up to date recommendations

Holyaperoli · 21/07/2024 18:33

Berlin, Prague and Amsterdam are fun and cheap. Lisbon is really lovely, amazing food, buzzy, city and beach, but I suspect might be scorching in August, same with Barcelona. But lots to see, i'd get the hop on hop off tour bus, best way to get round. Florence is beautiful too.

I've been to Copenhagen and Oslo - both are lovely but very very expensive.

DecafDodger · 21/07/2024 18:36

Budapest. Thermal baths, wandering around Margaret island and Buda castle for you. Plenty of buzzy culture for her.

rubyslipperss · 21/07/2024 18:42

Lisbon - was going to say Venice but city like
Lisbon might be better for two nights or Malaga

BitOutOfPractice · 21/07/2024 18:43

Tallinn. Unreserved recommendation. Affordable and packed With history / culture / stuff to do

Scorchio84 · 21/07/2024 18:44

MayoMayoMayo · 21/07/2024 17:51

Lisbon

Absolutley this, don't go to Dublin unless you have very deep pockets unfortunately we have nothing really to offer

BitOutOfPractice · 21/07/2024 18:44

And oh God don’t do to Florence in August. It’s hell on earth.
