Something you’ve done or said as an adult that now makes you cringe/embarrassed.

Just reading another thread and it made me think about things that I’ve said or done in the past but that I would never do now. I do find myself more forgiving of younger adults though so maybe that’s the way… it goes but I do cringe at my younger behaviour.

I was in my early 20s and a few of us went wedding dress shopping with a colleague. I tried on so many dresses and made the whole trip about me. I wasn’t getting married and the bride was about 10 years older than me and didn’t seem bothered but I’ve often thought about it and how awful it must have been. It makes my toes curl….I’m early 50s now and soooo different.

The lunge and trying to kiss the Asda man have made me howl!

I recently completely failed to self-edit and said OUT LOUD to a patient that he had ‘chub rub’ when I meant to diagnose (and say!) sweat rash. I call it chub rub in everyday life, but I forgot to put my professional hat on in front of the patient. Thankfully he found it hilarious, but I was absolutely horrified at myself.

MANY more, but that’s the most recent Grin

I was once walking along the street in the city centre. A young man was approaching me, but still a fair distance away. He looked right at me and gave me two thumbs ups. I thought it was quite weird and didn’t know what to do so, being British, I decided the polite course of action was to give him two thumbs up back. He didn’t drop his thumbs, so I felt I should also keep mine up. So there I am walking along, my two thumbs aloft feeling incredibly awkward. As he got much closer I saw that he was actually just holding onto the straps of his backpack, not giving any thumbs up at all. Nothing in my life makes me cringe as hard as the memory of this fairly innocuous event.

Fudgetheparrot · 19/07/2024 22:22

Once my neighbour asked me how I was and my brain just completely short circuited and I stared at him for about 30 seconds in silence and then just walked away without saying anything.

Omg I've just screamed and wheezed with laughter.

As a young man I was into dressing in 1970s clothes, this was about 1999. I had long blonde curly hair (that’s not even the cringe bit) and would wear flared jeans, I was an art student if that helps even a bit. So I had a two day work experience, on day two I wore a mint green shirt with the big collar and a tie, it was a hot day and I was getting a bit uncomfortable, so removed my tie and undid my top button, yeah totally giving off Barry Gibb vibes, well so I thought. For the rest of the day I was totally attracting admiring glances from both sexes of my vintage coolness. I remember strutting to Charing Cross to get my train, and still noticed glances, I was so arty and awesome. The shirt I admit was a bit uncomfortable with it’s awkward buttons, but you know, that’s 1970s polyester shirts for you!

It was only years later that I realised I had spent the entire day in a suitable for both casual and evening wear, mint green ladies polyester blouse! For anyone around at that time, this was not a cool thing to happen!

I’ve just squeaked my way through reading it out loud to my husband and we are both howling…

At school yesterday we had our Year 6 Leavers' Do.
I work there and my DD was one of the Leavers.
Towards the end of the do, I had to return to class. I kissed my DH goodbye and said 'Love you. See you later'. I then turned to say goodbye to one of the dads of DD's friend. Instead I repeated'Love you. See you later!' (in front of my Head too!) The dad just looked surprised and so did his wife!

Exactly this. Usually when I use the crying laughing emoji I'm not genuinely crying laughing but 😂

The sentence: 'He didn’t drop his thumbs, so I felt I should also keep mine up'....

I wore white to my best friend's wedding. It was cotton, knee length and had grey stripes but came across as white in the photos.

My friend is an absolute darling and said 'oh my god it's only me, wear what you like!' but her mother was another story. Face like thunder.

The thumbs is golden. Crying with laughter.

I just woke my husband up by laughing so loud at this (I was already feeling quite giggly after the lunge one!)

I was home alone with my first DS who was a couple of weeks old. He was napping when I heard a knock on the door and there was a guy who almost INSTANTLY seemed shifty. Moving from foot to foot, not making eye contact and looking up at my house/windows. He was apparently doing something with loft installation. I politely declined and came in feeling really weird. I went to text my DH, grabbed my phone and as I bent down I realised I had one boob fully out of my dress from breastfeeding DS. I still feel sorry for the poor lad I traumatised by flashing.

MorrisZapp · 19/07/2024 23:01

Also DP once accidentally wore a ladies blouse to Brugges. It was a deep v neck top from Diesel, very trendy at the time. It had a floral trim which was trendy too. But as the trip went on I realised someone must have put it in the men's bit of TK Maxx by mistake. He was practically baring his nipples. Lovely shade of green though, it did suit him.

Moonshiners · 19/07/2024 23:03

During a zoom team meeting in a relatively new, and pretty professional job, which I had started only a couple of months before lockdown. I managed to "speak to the boss" for the first time.

It was during the early days of the pandemic. The CEO of our organisation was about an hour and half into a meeting which mainly consisted of him talking. I had muted and turned my camera off (as was allowed) and though it was very dull was trying very hard to concentrate.
At one point I couldn't take any more and said to myself 'fuck me just shut up will you".
Obviously I had failed to mute my myself.
After a stunned silence the CEO said "moonshiners, you seem to have quite a strong opinion on this, anything to add".
I sheepishly replied "ermmm no all sounds good" before slowly dying of shame. The only thing that lifted the mood was my other colleague snorting and then muting, so at least we had something to bond over when we all finally met post lockdown.

MummyMcMumington · 19/07/2024 23:05

I took a Christmas card to a friend of my mums whilst she waited in the car and she told me to say when they came to the door to give them marigolds, I obviously didn’t have any marigolds, so I said, my mum will send you some marigolds. Strange looks all round. Turns out the accent was, my regards 🙈

My very very good friend (male) was getting married. He was older than me and I had never really done a wedding as a grown up before. As a wedding gift I bought him a pair of cuff links. Absolutely cringe when I think about him and his wife opening that gift up.

I'm so intrigued - are you Camilla Parker-Bowles, who did that very thing to Charles and Di?!
