What's the expectation or norm where you work?

Do you call, text, email?

I wouldn’t - I work with Deaf people. The two jobs I listed have health related entry criteria (front line police and pilots) that include a minimum level of hearing ability per an Audiogram, which would prevent entry by somebody with more than a very mild hearing loss. I know this because I am partially deaf and am prohibited from these jobs for that reason.

I am agreeing with you really, I just didn’t like the fact a PP suggested a call centre is the only job a Deaf (or deaf) person may not be able to do, as it minimises the difficulties that some have getting into the workplace, not that they CAN’T do it, but that they aren’t given the opportunity to.

P.S Sorry to OP for going off topic, I just get on my soapbox about it! I’m out of here 😂

We're required to personally phone in and speak to line manager or equivalent.

This. Using email/text is a disciplinary matter,

DilemmaDelilah · 20/07/2024 09:12

The rule is that we have to phone our line manager half an hour before we are due to start work. In practice... I start work half an hour before my line manager and half an hour before that he would be in the midst of kids breakfasts/getting ready for school etc so it would be incredibly disruptive for him. So I text him to let him know and then he can ring me later if he wants to. If I feel well enough to do so I also send an email to him, to our team Secretary to ask her to notify anyone with whom I have meetings that day, and to the project manager I am working with to let them know.

We have a sickness automated line…we just call the day we going sick…..and call again the day we go back

the managers are notified and then whoever iso. Duty that day will cancel , rearrange or cover our work. Rarely the manager phones unless it’s long term…. It’s a good system I think…..I’m NHS

I just message my line manager in WhatsApp
