How do you call in sick?

What's the expectation or norm where you work?

Do you call, text, email?

OP posts:
CrushingOnRubies · 18/07/2024 21:20

Message my line manager, and call the absence number at work.

HowardTJMoon · 18/07/2024 21:22

DM via Teams to my manager. Then block out the time in my Outlook calendar and send messages as needed saying I won't be joining meetings.

SirCharlesRainier · 18/07/2024 21:31

I don't actually know what the expectation is, but I would generally ring and speak to my line manager around start time (9am) on the first day. (If I really needed to let him know earlier I'd text, wouldn't like to ring before start time.)

Subsequent days, text or ring depending on what we'd said the previous day. I'd probably text any colleagues who needed to know or who might be expecting something from me.

One thing I never ever do is the 'sick voice'. Be as bright and chirpy as possible, I would feel slightly insulting to do otherwise, as if I were trying to sneak something past them. I take the attitude that I'm informing them of a fact, not asking permission or trying to justify anything. But then my work are pretty chill, and they know I'm conscientious and would be working unless truly unable to.

PaTuBo · 18/07/2024 21:32

We must phone our line manager within half an hour of our start time.
If they are not available they will ring us back as there's always work to be rescheduled or allocated to someone else. No text messages or emails allowed, NHS

ForgettingMeNot · 18/07/2024 21:33

Now I largely wfh there is little excuse to be not working apart from headaches/migraines but then I'd message my manager on teams or get my son to do it on my behalf. If I'm that bad I can't work, I'm usually in too much pain/vomiting/blurry eyes to message

space99 · 18/07/2024 21:37

I have to text a specific absence number before 9am and then my manager will ring me before 10am to discuss. Not sure what would happen if my manager was off however. It’s annoying staying awake to speak to manager but it is what it is.

EasterlyDirections · 18/07/2024 21:37

Whatsapp, we are a small business and it's all fairly casual. I don't normally need anything much covering, others who do just sort it out between themselves.

Ponderingwindow · 18/07/2024 21:39

I log into outlook and turn on “out of office”

LlynTegid · 18/07/2024 21:42

Call.

I think it's cowardly to text or email.

Why cowardly?

ChubSeedsYorkie · 18/07/2024 21:49

WhatsApp my manager. Was a very common occurrence during pregnancy 😂 🤢

AhBiscuits · 18/07/2024 21:50

We tend to WhatsApp our line manager. It doesn't matter how it's communicated.

OnTheBoardwalk · 18/07/2024 21:51

Years ago I got a disciplinary for not calling in. I was up all night really ill and sent an email to my boss at 5am saying I was really poorly and won’t be in. I then passed out asleep. I got disciplinary for not phoning before 8am. I didn’t stay there

now I do teams message and put my out of office. This let’s everyone know who’s trying to get hold of me I’m not around

Neodymium · 18/07/2024 21:51

Sometimes when you are sick it’s exhausting to make phone calls.

we are actually required to text - there is a dedicated phone that we text on and it has to be before 6am. I think the person with the phone would be annoyed at phone calls as then they have to get woken earlier and write stuff down.

then I have to log in and set work for my classes for the day, and usually will email my manager I’m not in.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 18/07/2024 21:58

We're supposed to call on teams. But as I know my line manager is busy in the mornings I usually send a message and she calls me when she has 5 minutes- not strictly policy but it works for her so she's not going to report it to anyone.
I've never had someone else call on my behalf but have called in to DH's work when he was in a car accident and in hospital

HenryCavillsPerfectTeeth · 18/07/2024 22:13

Teams/text our dept group chat and say I'm not coming in today. It's simpler as I don't work somewhere that I need to have cover arranged if I'm away.

ilovepixie · 18/07/2024 22:15

Have to call ourselves ASAP but no later that 2 hours before the start of your shift and speak to the duty manager.

Babycatsmummy · 18/07/2024 22:16

Call the band 6 as early as possible to say you won't be in, bleep the clinical operations department to tell them you won't be in because they need to know for the early staffing brief then call back later to speak to the ward manager. Bit excessive because nobody wants to communicate with each other and they don't want you to go off sick so try and deter by making it a mission to call in the first place.
If you are likely to be off for a while ( even with a sick note) you still have to check in weekly

DevilsKitchen · 18/07/2024 22:26

I would just whatsapp my line manager and let her know I’m not working and she would say okay “no worries do you need me to cancel any of your meetings?”. She may or may not log it as an official sick day.

Sometimes I do a bit of a half way house being sick anyway. WFH if I was meant to be in, nap and chill out but monitor emails. Those don’t get counted as sick.

I think the org policy might be stricter than that but my LM is really reasonable. She often tells me to finish early if it’s coming up to a break or she knows I have something special to get away for.

LadyCrumpet · 18/07/2024 22:59

We just put a message in the team chat on teams.

fungibletoken · 18/07/2024 23:21

We have to call HR at a minimum. Has to be a call unless you are incapacitated. I would also try to at least message my boss/direct reports.

Stardustmoon · 18/07/2024 23:22

Phone before 7.00am. Then let team know via email or wattsapp and plan lessons for the supply and email over.

42isthemeaning · 18/07/2024 23:43

We have to email each day of the absence by 7am, then send lesson plans / resources to each colleague who has to cover.
As a pp said, it is easier to go into work ill!

CookieCrumbles23 · 18/07/2024 23:50

I get my Mum to call me in sick 😬

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/07/2024 23:51

Teams message and then log it on the hr portal.

Anything important in the diary needs to be flagged for cover or cancelled.
