New Omaze Cornwall House

What do we think?

It has a faintly Poirot look about it. I think it's gorgeous, but it's another one that would need a live-in window cleaner. Omaze do like a house with a lot of glass😀.

I'd love to eat breakfast on the terrace with that view of the sea, though - even if most of the year I'd be wearing a duffle coat.

I love it; it’s got the sea and a pool. And parking - unlike the London house! But I’d take any of them, frankly - they’re a mini lottery win and would change my life in unbelievable ways

Towelmode · 18/07/2024 16:17

I like it, the views

Ilovemyshed · 18/07/2024 16:17

Isn't it a scam though?

How? The house is real, but I've heard they credit check applicants before giving the prize. I'm not sure that's actually possible or legal though.

What makes you say that?

I like it, the views

I know! And from every room. I'd never get tired of looking at the sea.

Lovely! I grew up looking over the same bay, but from another angle.

WallaceinAnderland · 18/07/2024 16:57

I think all the Omaze properties are houses that are difficult to sell through regular channels for one reason or another. So the person that wins has a house which is expensive to run and maintain yet difficult to sell. Not quite the asset you think it is.

Andthereitis · 18/07/2024 16:58

Great views but I don't like the house.
Too much glass!

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 18/07/2024 16:59

Frankly, if it were mine I'd keep the tower and demolish the glass house.

They do get sold - as of May this year, 10 of the 14 winners had sold the house they won, 3 still lived in theirs and 1 rented the house out on AirBnB.

But they don't sell for anything like the price Omaze claims. Still free money if you paid £25 for the ticket, though.

Any house will sell at the right price. So it's 'valued' at £3m but 'only' sells for £2m. Someone got a bargain and you got £2m. Win win!

Plus you get £250k expenses, which would last quite a while if you wanted to live there whilst it was on the market.

People are very cynical about Omaze, but I've yet to see anything that supports their cynicism.

@PeriIsKickingMyButt precisely. Entries are credit checked but you don't get ticket money refunded.

LizzieBennett73 · 18/07/2024 18:06

I know someone who bought a house from an Omaze winner. It's a stunning house, uber modern but it had sat on the market for nearly 2 years before Omaze purchased it and the local developer who originally built it had a terrible reputation and have since gone bust. They've had to plough some serious money into remedial building work and some designs like the pool were very badly thought out so it's been a difficult project for them. But what they've done has vastly improved it and it should be worth significantly more when they're finished.

No house is perfect, there's always a compromise with access/location etc. And I think Omaze swoop in and find houses that have been sat on the market for some time... then raid Homesense/TK Maxx to furnish them out!

I very much doubt they will check entries - that would cost more than it's worth, as there are millions of entries.

They check the winner to make sure there are no accusations of money laundering or other financial scandal and that they have a legal right to live in the UK, but what would be the point of a credit check? They aren't lending anyone money.

I wouldn't like to live with that much glass tbh but the view is very nice, I'd sell it and buy something much smaller.

Good luck to anyone that enters the raffle.

If you look at the terms and conditions they detail all of this and more, I suppose they don’t want to give the house to someone who will generate negative publicity (criminal record etc). Either Omaze or raffle house require you to do ‘reasonable’ publicity too. I’d hate for my photo and name to be in the press. Still I think I could live with it for a £3m house!

CoraPirbright · 18/07/2024 18:43

Looks gorgeous - love all the glass.

The one they raffled in North Devon (like a glass triangle) is apparently built on a dodgy cliff and locals say it won’t be standing in 10 years time!!

Tosstyhat · 18/07/2024 19:16

I read once that the houses end up being big burdens for the prize winners because the expenses are astronomical and they struggle to sell them.

Chersfrozenface · 18/07/2024 19:45

The Gleneagles house was sold for £4,210,000 six months after being won. Omaze had paid £4.3 million for it, do that's not bad.

SingingSands · 18/07/2024 19:48

I could live there with my fluffy white cat and be a Bond villain (in my head).

That doesn't make it a scam! Is the lottery a scam?
I've won £10 Amazon vouchers more than once.
