What was your wedding meal?

And what options were available for the evening guests?

I'm just looking for some inspiration because I have absolutely not a clue what I want for the day! All I know is that full bellies = happier people (and also hopefully less blind drunk people, because we know our friends! Grin)

We just went for lunch in Moro afterwards, so tapas and champagne.

RabbitsRock · 18/07/2024 14:59

We had roast beef & chicken with jacket potatoes & lots of different salads. Can’t remember the dessert! I think profiteroles were one of the choices. The evening do was just wedding cake & I felt bad that we hadn’t organised something, even if it was just pasties. It was a late wedding but we still should have catered for evening guests. It became a standing joke that the beef was tinged orange & the chicken was pink!

gingercat02 · 18/07/2024 15:05

It's was 2002 so a bit vague on the details
We had soup (can't remember what kind) roast lamb dinner and brandy snaps with Drambuie cream (DH is Scottish)
No evening guests cos I hate evening invitations. You either like people enough to invite them to the whole day or you don't bother imo.
Also, we got married in NI so everyone apart from my family had to travel quite far.

I remember at one of my friend’s first wedding, there was a cold cooked salmon side as part of the buffet which was absolutely delicious. At my niece’s wedding, you could choose from various hot dishes including curry & bangers & mash. It was delicious but a roasting hot day so a bit hard going!

@pinacollateral This sounds absolutely lovely, I'm writing it down. Love the idea of a Mediterranean style meal.

I'm going to have to check on everyone's dietary requirements (I know the vast majority don't have any preferences, just a few I'm unsure of), because I also like the sound of bacon butties in the evening. What could be a good veggie equivalent? I want to make sure they have an equally tasty option if we go that route.

@MeganM3 The coffee/tea is a great point, I myself won't be able to get through the day without several coffees, I hadn't considered that. Making a note of it!

We just had good quality sausages and veggie sausages in the evening, with salads/ relishes/ condiments etc.

Everyone had been very well fed in the afternoon, they don't need much in the evening and we had the cake then as well. Unless you're having loads of evening-only guests, I'd say don't overthink the evening food, it's really not as important, just filling a hole really.

Cas112 · 18/07/2024 17:19

I went to a wedding once that did bacon butties and sausage butties in the evening and I absolutely LOVED it haha

SingingSands · 18/07/2024 17:31

Haggis
Rainbow trout
Roast beef
Cranachan

Veggie option for veggies, kids meal for the kids (can't remember what it was), and a chicken breast for people who didn't like beef.

Think we did something for the evening guest but I can't remember what it was - it was 20 years ago!

Ladychatterly86 · 18/07/2024 18:29

150 guests.
Wedding breakfast Fish and chips with mushy peas/ gravy/ curry sauce vegetarian and gluten alternatives.
Cake for dessert.

Evening: a hog roast and giant cheeseboard.

mindutopia · 18/07/2024 18:37

Honestly, I have absolutely no idea. 😂

I think we did starters of salmon/beetroot (what sort? Who knows!) and some sort of artichoke thing, which was meant to be Jerusalem artichokes, but ended up being globe. And I never did figure out if it was a last minute sub and they hoped we wouldn’t know what a Jerusalem artichoke was, or if the chef actually didn’t know the difference. 🤷🏻‍♀️

One of the mains was a goats cheese tart (I was veg), no idea what the other one was. Chicken probably?

Pudding was a trio of mini desserts.

For the evening, we had cake and a cheese cake (like a tower of cheese, not a cheesecake) with nice bread, crackers, fruit platters, chutneys. We didn’t have evening guests, just a cake and cheese round.

BeaLola · 18/07/2024 18:40

Married in 2000 in the summer

We had a sit down with Ogen melon & prawns to start, shoulder of lamb with roasted new potatoes and veg, raspberry pavlova

In evening we had a free flowing buffet of a mixture of curries and all accompaniments and then a dessert table with raspberries, strawberries , double cream, Belgian chocolate & rum cake and some other desserts that I can't recall as the Belgian one was fab

WelkomInEuropaJonguh · 18/07/2024 19:04

It was quite a long time ago now so I can only remember what I had. It was a Christmas dinner-style main with chicken instead of turkey, cranachan (and a starter that escapes me).

I don't recall the evening food either apart from the wedding cake. We had 3 different layers - fruitcake, chocolate cake and Madeira cake.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/07/2024 19:24

Lancashire Hotpot - the caterers did a proper version and a veggie/halal version. Then some different puddings e.g. trifle, pie, crumble and loads of custard. It was a cold day! We didn't have day and evening separate - everyone came to the whole thing.

IamaRevenant · 18/07/2024 19:51

We had steak at a very good restaurant (no vegetarians so we all had the same).

My sister had roast roadkill venison 😅 prepped by my dad (the deer was still warm when we found it!), loads of side dishes/salads prepped by my mum and the cake was done by my other sister - chocolate with crystallised edible flower petals covering it.

Of the weddings I've been to I prefer it to be a bit less formal (maybe not roadkill though!)

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 18/07/2024 23:35

Oops forgot to add we had a buffet for the evening and possibly the wedding cake too

Frith2013 · 18/07/2024 23:47

Roast chicken dinner then creme brulee or apple pie.

That was lunch time. No evening do because no couple is interesting enough for people to give up a whole day.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 19/07/2024 00:33

It was 28 years ago.

We had potato and leek soup, roast lamb with cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes and veg, strawberry shortcake for lunch at 2pm. We then had an evening buffet at 8pm with beef, ham, salmon, prawns, salads, cheese, quiche and nice breads.

80 people (including 10 children) day and evening.

Tarkan · 19/07/2024 00:40

Our venue was above an Indian restaurant so they catered the wedding.

Everything was served as sharing platters on the tables so people could take as little or as much as they wanted and even have a little of both the options.

Starter was onion bhajis or prawn cocktail, the sauce was served separately so people could choose as much or as little as they wanted there.

Main was roast chicken or chicken tikka masala. DH and I had a mini sharing platter between us with a chicken korma though as we prefer that.

Dessert was chocolate fudge cake, and I can't remember the second option now. The restaurant owner also randomly brought a cheesecake for a friend's partner and put it down saying "for the hungry man". Grin We also had wedding cake and cupcakes for guests.

The evening guests had a choice of a huge buffet of various things, a mixture of Indian snacks and more British options, we didn't get any choice there but there was a massive spread for everyone and tbh I can't even remember most of the options for guests now. A vegetarian friend (who was only there in the evening) actually told me it was the best range of food she's had to pick from at a wedding buffet.

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 19/07/2024 00:45

Full-on Christmas dinner with all the trimmings (5 days before 🎄) Was lush!

Incakewetrust · 19/07/2024 00:47

I actually can't remember and it's driving me mad 😂
I blame the fact that I had pregnancy brain and morning sickness so didn't eat much 🙈

SageRosemary · 19/07/2024 01:36

We selected hotel based on a friend's wedding the previous year. The food was wonderful and our priority was guest comfort. The hotel didn't disappoint. Our meal was delicious.

We had
Starter - choice of local Black Pudding served on a disc of pastry with caramelised apple slices, little green salad OR Chicken & Leek Vol-au-Vent OR Melon done rather fancily for the vegetarians.
Soup - Cream of Vegetable Soup served with Irish Soda Bread and crusty rolls with local Irish butter
Mains - choice of Roast Beef OR Salmon served with mashed potatoes, roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables OR Vegetarian (which I can't remember but I think it wasn't stir fry as my SIL has been caustic in her comments about that at other wedding meals, she doesn't actually seem to enjoy vegetables much!, it might have been Ratatouille, I would't have picked a Curry anyway)
Dessert - a "Medley" of little portions, there was lemon meringue, chocolate torte with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and a raspberry mousse topped with a raspberry.
Then teas and coffees with a sliver of wedding cake.

Later, during a break in the dancing, there were sandwiches, cocktail sausages, more wedding cake and tea

Totally agree.

LifeZ · 19/07/2024 03:38

We had canapés then for the wedding breakfast we had poached pears with some kind of cheese( can't remember what) and caramelised walnuts, followed by lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli and red wine sauce, a champagne sieve then creme brulee with some kind of macerated strawberries and kind of tulle biscuit.

Didn't have a separate evening event but had a buffet with whole cheese, crackers and fresh breads and various condiments and accompaniments, different pates and terrines, cup cakes, wedding cake, fruits and all kinds of sweets. There was a crazy amount of food. I came home with enormous cheeses which we were eating for eternity and an enormous supply of sweets.
It felt like an entire day of eating.

AppleStrudel23 · 19/07/2024 04:02

We had little canapés with drinks to start and then a hog roast! The man who did the hog roast also supplied pudding (roulade with cream) and a veggie option

2chocolateoranges · 19/07/2024 04:09

Starter : lentil soup or melon
Main: steak pie or breast of chicken with potatoes and veg
Dessert : chocolate profiteroles or cheesecake.
