What was your wedding meal?

And what options were available for the evening guests?

I'm just looking for some inspiration because I have absolutely not a clue what I want for the day! All I know is that full bellies = happier people (and also hopefully less blind drunk people, because we know our friends! Grin)

Well a sit down restaurant meal won't work as well for 70 as it did for 6 for my second wedding. 😄

But for my first, which was posh hotel thing, the best thing did, which everyone loved, was bacon, sausage and egg buffet sandwiches in the evening. Soaked up all the alcohol and went down a treat.

Fancy starter, filling sausage and mash main, creme brulee for pudding. Bacon sandwiches later. Happy guests all round.

But surely that's not possible?
I'm not particularly fussy but a lot of that menu doesn't remotely appeal to me!

In my opinion a buffet is always preferable - a huge one with lots of options!

mumonthehill · 18/07/2024 10:54

We had a buffet with whole salmon , homemade huge pork pies, veggie tarts, pasta salad, salads, breads. It was lovely. We did not have evening guests but we put out sausage rolls and loads of cheese for later.

Canapés at arrival - 3pm
BBQ at 6pm - looooads of options, jacket potatos, breads, corn etc
Brownie or lemon tart
A cheese tower instead of a cake with crackers, grapes, celery etc (17kg of cheese 🙈)
Bacon sandwiches at 11pm

Loved it 😂

My advice: go very cheap and cheerful, extra points for something a bit tongue in cheek and naf OR go very expensive and wow. But the middle is always terrible - tomato soup and chicken...

We had tomato soup! Loved it but, all of our ushers had tomato soup down their lovely white shirts, so, in hindsight, wouldn't opt for it again!

lastweekofsanity · 18/07/2024 11:16

I work in venue where we hold a lot of weddings and our most popular menu is the buffet which seems to go down really well as people can eat when they're hungry and pick while they're drinking, it's so much more popular than the big sit down meals.

Everyone had a choice of two starters ad three mains, they let us have our choices in advance and no one went for the vegetarian evening option. We were asking everyone to give up a Saturday in the summer to sped with us so we made sure everyone had food they wanted.

I chose the vegetarian option at friend's wedding. Stuffed mushrooms and veg, something I enjoy. Except I was given a plate with one mushroom, a small portabello, with a bit of seasoned breadcrumbs on top, and by the time the bowls of side vegetables were passed down to us there were none left. Pudding was a 'dainty' portion too, I was so hungry!

So no matter what meal you go with, make sure there is enough for everyone!

BobbyBiscuits · 18/07/2024 12:04

@pinacollateral the first part of my comment was partly a joke.
Your wedding food sounds lovely. I did say I thought having a grill would be a good idea. Obviously as long as I'm not in charge of cooking ambient temperature steaks! Haha.

Lanawashington · 18/07/2024 12:11

We had a bbq with sausages, burgers, chicken skewers, prawns, salad, potato salad, coleslaw etc. Then about 9.30pm we had a buffet with sandwiches, wraps, crisps, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, typical buffet food as we knew everyone would be drunk by then and wanting something to keep them going. Also had a cheese table and a dessert table

Yeah, I would never choose to eat something like tomato soup wearing my probably expensive wedding outfit. It just seems a recipe for disaster.

HMTheQueenMuffin · 18/07/2024 12:18

Oh heavens. We got married in 2007 and i am not from the UK and so took the advice from the venue. We had lamb and mash for men and chicken and salad for women. I cringe now. The starter was prawn cocktail and smoked salmon. The pudding was a chocolate fondant (men) and a meringue and berry nest (women). So cliched. I chose sausages and mash for kids.

Then 10 years later we renewed our vows as it coicincided with a our significant birthdays and we had a massive buffet with roast beef and chicken, and salmon, and gammon and salads and a vegetarian moussaka and stuffed sweet potatos and that was a much better idea all told.

My favourite wedding I ever went to was a dry wedding as the couple met in AA and they did the most glorious and wide ranging afternoon tea with ALL the sandwiches and home made sausage rolls and ALl the cakes. I loved it.

HMTheQueenMuffin · 18/07/2024 12:20

Oh! And we did not do 'evening guests' but we did serve bacon butties and Irish coffee at 1 am. That was probably the most popular part to be honest.

MickyShell · 18/07/2024 12:27

Hog roast 😋

Musicaltheatremum · 18/07/2024 12:30

We had canapes then sausage casserole (husband proposed to me over this a year earlier) then lemon posset. It was in a church hall..it was great. All loved it and they did vegetarian sausages as needed.

hari27 · 18/07/2024 12:32

18 December 22 years ago.

Full Christmas dinner, all the trimmings.

Evening
Bacon or sausage or haggis and tattie scone rolls.
Cheese and biscuits
Cake

Bbq1 · 18/07/2024 12:40

Gosh, i don't remember exactly but it was a full sit down 3 course meal at about 2pm then a huge buffet from around 8pm onwards. We had a lot left over but I'd absolutely rather that than people go hungry. My friend had a 2 course small wedding breakfast at around lunchtime then absolutely no evening buffet whatsoever. People were really hungry again by then with the weddings breakfast guests expected to just go through and the people there for the evening probably expecting something to eat. I think we ended up getting snacks on the way back to the hotel!

MimiSunshine · 18/07/2024 12:46

We had a curry banquet serviced ‘family style’ at the tables. But the venue had a professional fine dining Indian chef and the food was amazing. All of our guests raved about it.

otherwise it’s always chicken because it’s felt to be the safest option most people will like.

hammering · 18/07/2024 12:46

This was a long time ago when wedding venues were not very adventurous...

Vegetable soup or melon to start
Roast chicken dinner
Apple pie 😂

I've been to a couple of weddings in the last few years - the one I enjoyed the most food wise had a bit of a bbq vibe. Each circular table had a platter of BBQ meat (nice sausages, chicken, ribs I think) and a couple of different salads on the side) We all served ourselves. Can't remember what we had for dessert!

OnlyYellowRoses · 18/07/2024 12:50

We had quite a relaxed wedding so the 'sit down' meal straight after the ceremony was huge ploughman's platters in the middle of each of the tables with cheese, breads, pickles etc with veggie versions for them.
The evening bit the venue had a wood fired pizza oven with a plain, meat and a veggie option and guests just went up and asked for whichever one they fancied. They just kept them coming until people didn't want anymore.

Omg 😂 and this was 2007, not 1937?

JollyHostess101 · 18/07/2024 12:53

Carvery- we thought no one would go hungry if they could choose it themselves!

Anonym00se · 18/07/2024 12:56

We had afternoon tea instead of a wedding breakfast, and had the sit-down meal in the evening. Soup, roast beef dinner and trio of deserts. Our wedding cake was tiers of different cheeses. After the meal we went into a big lounge for drinks, where the cheese and biscuits were served.

missshilling · 18/07/2024 12:57

We had afternoon tea with sandwiches and about ten tons of cakes brought by guests. Later in the evening we had a fancy hog roast with options for people who didn’t eat meat or pork. Free bar all day and into the early hours.

AgMaggy · 18/07/2024 12:58

Charcuterie board sharing board for starts and BBQ sharing boards for main so people at each table could help themselves then wedding cake for dessert. Buffet of party food for later in the evening.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/07/2024 12:58

We got married at 2pm.
Afternoon Tea (including sandwiches and scones (sweet and savoury) was served at 4pm and we had a Greek BBQ/Meze/buffet at 7pm.

It was flippin lovely.
