What pet would you love to have, but don’t have the patience for?

Parrots, or birds in general. I love birds but I just don’t have the time, patience and experience for.

It’s a long commitment pet that require a lot of dedicated care.

A beagle. I love them, but do not have the time, energy or patience.

TeenToTwenties · 17/07/2024 11:30

DD's snake causes me a lot of stress. It isn't so much the time he takes, but he goes on random not eating phases which makes me worry. It is a 'known thing' but still stresses me.

Tortoise or lizard

Gettingbysomehow · 17/07/2024 11:34

Im a dog and a cat person. I have 2 lovely cats that I love but Id love a small dog. But I work full time so I cant look after a dog. Ill have to wait until Im retired.

EasterlyDirections · 17/07/2024 11:35

Dog, I wouldn’t cope with the restriction of not leaving them for too long (we both work outside the home and often have long days out at weekends).

Been there. It’s scary when your snake refuses to eat. Certain breeds are susceptible to it especially Burmese pythons. They do eventually crack but it’s scary

Anything! I absolutely love animals but can only hack them for short periods of time. I’m the same with kids, hence being child free 😆

I borrow them instead it’s much more fun

A dog. I don't have the patience and you need to be dedicated to have one.

poetrylover · 17/07/2024 11:44

I'd love a baby elephant or a giraffe or a monkey of any type. Seeing as I can't have any of those for obvious reasons , I'd love a goat or a donkey. I'm not allowed either! 😂

TheHuntSyndicate · 17/07/2024 11:44

I have lots of dogs but would not get a Borzoi. My sister had three, sadly all now passed but they require a huge level of training.

My Doberman only needs to be told something once and he's picked it up!

Exactly this too. I work from home and could easily take the dog for regular walks, but I like to just head off for the day with no plan of when I will be back.

We have an 11 year old beagle. She's making up for around 9 years of stressing us out by running off and stealing food by becoming the easiest, most chilled senior dog you could imagine. It was absolutely worth it, but I can see why you'd hesitate!

Sarvanga24 · 17/07/2024 11:49

I'm a dog person, but I love the IDEA of having cats. I have a couple of temporary cats at the moment (family member between houses) and they are very much underlining that it is the idea I like and not the reality.

Hair everywhere (despite brushing by owner). Carpets with threads sticking up (and that's after a carpet fitter had to fix one they had pulled up). Food sitting about. Wildlife caught.

Bleurgh. Not for me.

TheFlis · 17/07/2024 11:50

I have a dog. I would love another with the hope of them entertaining each other but suspect I would just end up with both of them sat at my feet with toys, demanding my attention.

Compash · 17/07/2024 11:50

Chickens. Or a hawk or owl of some kind (except I'd feel bad about keeping the latter in captivity).

seensome · 17/07/2024 11:52

Parrot or a rabbit

WiseBiscuit · 17/07/2024 11:53

Dogs. I absolutely love dogs but detest dog walking, so we don’t have dogs.

I have horse (massive, expensive pain in the arse but also my best friend) and 2 cats and some bantams. The cats and hens are easy.

Tortoise or lizard

Couldn't have a tortoise because my dog regularly would try and bring one home with him on his morning walk.

Where my mum lives in Spain they are becoming a real problem.
To my disgust, they are like mini dinosaurs, and in my experience the wild ones can move at quite a pace.
Just stay in your lane tortoise!!!

I've (still feel awful) have happened to run over two who'd wandered into the path of my car.

So I'm out

FrenchMustard · 17/07/2024 11:56

Would love a small-holding with farm animals but I think it’s probably a lot more work than I anticipate!

My DD wants an aquarium with exotic fish, not that we don’t have the patience but a murderous cat who wouldn’t be able to restrain himself.

NeverMindTheBackProblems · 17/07/2024 11:59

A collie. I love dogs and have had 2 collie-crosses before. I just don't think I have it in me to try and train another 😢

Izzynohopanda · 17/07/2024 12:00

Collie - love this breed but I think it would be too much for me (my lab is hard enough).

Compash · 17/07/2024 12:02

Oh, and of course a horse! 😍🐴 Had chickens, birds of prey and horses as a kid, but the latter two, at least, were lots of work...

sweetkitty · 17/07/2024 12:03

DDs bearded dragon was very stressful at times, getting his viv set up just right, doing his biannual poo tests and giving him his anti parasite meds, his food dying all the time, then he would go into brumation and not eat for 4 months! He was a lovely wee thing though and lived until he was 10.

Rabbits are stressful too and should be classed as exotic pets, I’m on a rabbit welfare site and the number that are bought as easy child’s pets then just ignored when the child gets bored. They don’t make good pets. They don’t like cuddles or being picked up, they need a lot more space than you think and their diet has to be carefully monitored. I wouldn’t get rabbits again.

Personally I would love a horse but don’t have the time or the money for one. Too many vet bills and stressing about their health.

Chessboardtable · 17/07/2024 12:03

Wouldn’t get a dog as can’t be bothered with all the effort.

And unlike a lot of dog owners, if I had one I would want to do it justice, eg take it for decent lengths walks not just walk it round the block, leave dog poo everywhere then shut it in the house alone for 7 hours, like a lot of people seem to do. Dog ownership has become an entitlement rather than a privilege.

Compash · 17/07/2024 12:04

And a FIELD OF DONKS, please!!! 💗
