MIL refusing to give DP birth certificate?

moonageday · 15/07/2024 19:29

Just that really, not sure where else to seek advice from. MIL has been NC with DP and I for nearly 2 years, DP still in low contact with FIL, MIL has been very controlling in the past and I feel this is just another way to control DP! Planning on getting married etc so we would really need this. Advice how to go about this please? Thanks

He can just apply for a copy from the registry office.

Brefugee · 15/07/2024 19:30

you can get a copy from the registrar. All birth certificates are certified copies from the registrar's master register anyway.

BrightLightTonight · 15/07/2024 19:30

You can order a duplicate in-line

Sarvanga24 · 15/07/2024 19:31

Just order a certified copy:

Gcn · 15/07/2024 19:31

Just order a new one. Problem solved.

MissingKitty · 15/07/2024 19:32

Order a new one, it cost me about £15

Andywarholswig · 15/07/2024 19:32

you can pay for a copy of his birth certificate - cut her out of the picture. www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate

Twotooto · 15/07/2024 19:32

He can order a copy of his birth certificate, he doesn’t need his mother’s permission to do this. I had to get a copy of mine before I got married as the original had gone missing. How to go about it will depend on where he was born, but a quick google will give you the answer you need.

Sunshineafterthehail · 15/07/2024 19:32

Order and pay ten quid over the phone.. Be with you in a few days.

Witchbitch20 · 15/07/2024 19:33

As everyone has already said, order a copy.

Then, because I’m petty, I’d let her know I had ordered copy so won’t be needing hers.

Scautish · 15/07/2024 19:36

Cancel the cheque!

BashfulClam · 15/07/2024 19:38

You can buy as many as you want from the registry office. When you go to get your marriage certificate ask for at least 3 of them. One to keep nice, one to send away to update your records where required and a back-up.

DoAClassicCamel · 15/07/2024 20:02

Costs about £12 I think. Easily done.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 15/07/2024 20:09

Do you believe/suspect the birth certificate could contain information new to DH? If so, it might be better if you ordered the cert and had advanced warning to support him? (I just was wondering why MIL would refuse to provide something that can be obtained so easily via another route. Perhaps she cant cope with disclosing that info)

TheCultureHusks · 15/07/2024 20:11

Stupid MIL, you just order one!!

Your husband needs to pay to get copies of his own birth certificate. The one your mil has is hers.

Kelly51 · 15/07/2024 20:23

A new one is about £15, my DS needed a copy.

TheSpottedZebra · 15/07/2024 20:24

£12.50, dispatches in 4 working days.
I ordered one on Friday.

I was thinking this. Has he ever seen his birth certificate @moonageday ?

needsomewarmsunshine · 15/07/2024 20:27

As a mum she might not want to part with it as he's her son, which is fair enough.
Get a copy done.

That’s just nuts.

MulberryBushRoundabout · 15/07/2024 20:35

Yes it sounds like another way of controlling him, she probably doesn’t realise anyone can order a copy.

But it is worth keeping in mind the possibility it’ll show something he doesn’t know. Has he seen it before?
