House full of flu - Anybody else?l

I can’t even believe we’re all experiencing this mid July, I know there’s strains to catch all year around but I just didn’t expect it. I know you might wonder how I know it’s the flu and not just a nasty cold but we’ve all had raging temperatures, can’t speak for the kids as they’re still young and don’t understand but me and my partner have had serious killer aches to the point walking has felt impossible. A complete blocked nose, no appetite, chills and shakes, and my throat, well entire mouth really is killing me due to coughing so much. We’ve all at least vomited twice too.

The worst thing is how abruptly it came on, we’ve all caught it one after the other from each other, me being last so I just feel deathly still. It’s only been 4/5 days for the kids and my partner (3 for me) so I know it’s ridiculous to expect to be any kind of better yet but oh my god please tell me we’ll get through this! 😭😭😭

Just can’t understand how five tests for me and five for my partner could be wrong! 😩 Don’t get me wrong, certainly has felt like Covid that’s for sure, absolutely not just your regular cold.

I have had COVID but never tested positive for it. The tests aren’t always reliable.

The reason I know I had it, at least twice, is that my husband had exactly the same symptoms as me and tested positive. Both of his tests were administered by professionals as opposed to home RAT tests. In one instance, I came down with it a day after him and in the other case, I had it first and was two or three days ahead of him in symptoms.

But I have had a positive test.

Well whatever it was has now developed in to a sinus infection. Leaking fluorescent yellow/green from my nose, can’t open my mouth without pain along my jaw and teeth, cheeks feel swollen and tender to touch, same goes for my entire face actually. This is absolute MISERY!!!! 😩😩😩

Exactly what I've got too.
Damn Covid.

CeruleanDive · 20/07/2024 13:57

People have posted about not getting a positive LFT until 9 or more days in, OP, so might be worth keeping testing, if you can manage it. Sounds awful. Hope it starts to lift soon.

justasking111 · 20/07/2024 14:27

I didn't have the swabs just presumed because I had all the symptoms.

Yeah I’m going to just assume from now I’ve had Covid tbh, it can’t possibly have been anything else. I now have a follow on sinus infection but my taste and smell is all kinds of messed up. I either can’t taste anything or when I do it tastes like rotten meat or stale milk, I could honestly cry this has been the worst thing I’ve ever had to go through and I STILL feel just so poorly with it.

That sounds like a secondary infection, to whatever virus you had first. Get yourself checked out by a GP, as you'd may benefit from antibiotics.
My bug has definitely spread to my sinuses (has done this before), but not that bad just vast amounts of snot. Easier to breathe through my nose now than a few days agos, but insides of my nose felt swollen shut.
Hope your little ones are doing better.

MigGirl · 20/07/2024 23:02

@Lefmry hope it clears up soon, we are all feeling a bit more human in our house. I still can't taste things properly and both DH and DS are coughing still but definitely on the mend. I am hoping we now all have a good summer.

I really do hope you feel better soon op xx.

You’re not vaccinated?

I feel as described but I can assure you flu is around, I am a nurse and was caring for a group of patients all week, then they started to test positive for flu. For me it is the temperature I can't get down, the dry cough, abdominal pain. It's awful.

"Between the flu, COVID and RSV, we have 'so many things circulating simultaneously'. Here's what the data says - ABC News" https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-21/flu-whooping-cough-rsv-cases-up-as-covid-cases-unkown/104002964

I don't see why we wouldn't have flu at this time of year. Australia is suffering. People fly abroad to and from Australia so they can spread it.

RSV is high as is whooping cough there . We share our germs worldwide these days.

Between the flu, COVID and RSV, we have 'so many things circulating simultaneously'. Here's what the data says

It's not an extraordinary year in terms of the flu or RSV "in isolation", but this year's winter season is unusual because there are many things circulating together.

Currently lying in bed after testing positive for Covid Friday! Felt poorly from Tuesday onwards , tested negative Tuesday and Thursday. Friday morning woke up to an almighty headache and upset tummy. Tested positive. By lunchtime I was in bed with chills, tiredness and muscle aches. Haven’t moved from bed since. Now have sticky eye and blocked nose. Supposed to be starting a new job tomorrow!

Day 9 of being ill and I’m still as bad as ever. I have spent the best part of today crying my eyes out in a dark room because I’m so fed up. Symptoms include: Soooo much congestion in my nose, no appetite, no energy, when I do eat everything tastes absolutely vile for example I just ate a Chinese by us which is one of my favourite things ever (you choose the ingredients, and main components and it’s all mixed together in a box) and it tasted like I was chewing on pencils. My whole face hurts, still have a relentless cough, tooth pain, jaw pain and still going really hot every now and then if I try and do too much, too much being literally just walking downstairs. Can’t hear much either, everything is muffled. I think I’ll definitely be calling the doctor tomorrow! I feel awful my partner is going to have to call in sick to watch the kids because I just can’t. We live 5 hours away from my parents and siblings and everybody else we know works full time, I have grandparents but they’re very elderly. This reaaaaaaalllllly sucks! 😩

You can get secondary infections. Sounds like your sinuses are completely blocked up which can make you deaf. The face and teeth pain are awful. So GP it is

Crunchymum · 21/07/2024 18:27

No flu / covid here just delightful Norovirus.

School issued a letter on Friday due to unprecedented levels of sickness, PHE involved.

2 out of 3 DC down (awful but shortlived for the actual vomiting!)

So sad as DC1 is leaving primary on Wednesday and Y6 is the most affected year 😢

User016529 · 21/07/2024 18:58

I had it. It was Covid.
Tested negative until day 8 !

Get well soon

Lefmry · 24/07/2024 09:45

Hi everyone, I went the doctors Monday who gave me antibiotics for a sinus infection but told me to give it 2/3 days before starting them as a lot of sinus infections are viral. Well it’s been been the 2 days and I’ve started them because I can’t cope with misery like this a moment longer. The inside of my nose and back of my throat smells/tastes like gone off cottage cheese, I can’t describe it any better than that, I can just smell the infection. My one ear is totally and utterly blocked I can’t hear a thing from it. The face pain is better today but yesterday was absolutely awful. The worst thing is the congestion still, I am literally so congested I can’t even put it into words honestly. I am panicking every day because I just want to lie down as I’m exhausted from being so poorly and I can’t because I panic I won’t be able to breathe. It is the illest I think I’ve ever been and it’s day 12 so far.

Katy4321 · 24/07/2024 10:02

Oh I'm so sorry that sounds miserable and I would have started the antibiotics too under those circumstances. Have you tried the nasal decongestant sprays like otrivine? They should only be used for a few days at a time, but do make it so much easier to breathe and will give you a chance to get some proper rest. I'm sure you are doing it but make sure you drink plenty too, as that can really help.
Get well soon.

SnapdragonToadflax · 24/07/2024 10:16

Secondary infections are really common after Covid, it just completely knocks your system out. I've had it three times and had a chest infection twice and the last time an ear infection which completely blocked both ears and gave me tinnitus (which I still have two years later).

But flu is really horrible too and lasts ages, it may well be flu as even if levels are low there will be some of it around. You can get test kits online if you really want to know. I've only had proper flu twice, once as a teen and once when I was about 30. That second time it took me three months to feel properly back to normal.

I hope you feel better soon.
