I would just like to say: I'm Scottish and I'll be rooting for England tonight...

That's all :)

OP posts:
Queenofwistfulthinking · 14/07/2024 22:09

Well something is coming home and fortunately it ain't the cup 🇪🇸

Itstherichthatgetthepleasureasusual · 14/07/2024 22:09

Well I'm really chuffed Spain won!

I'm English but I've now lived in Scotland more years than I ever lived in England. Call myself an honorary Scot.
I support Any one but England. Mainly because I can't stand the way the media reacts to every English success.

I will admit to not minding Gareth Southgate though. I think he is a decent guy and that's rare in football.

I would just like to say... I'm Scottish and I'm delighted Spain won. Wooooohooooo!!!

I'm English and I think the best team won. Because I could see Spain played better football, not because of some stupid rivalry that Scotland bang on about.

TimeandMotion · 14/07/2024 22:15

Pretty pathetic of this coming on here to gloat when OP started a nice thread.

I’m Scottish and always support England unless playing against Scotland. I am particularly unimpressed by Scots who live in England (as I do) and still embrace the “anyone but England” mentality. Grow up or go home.

Sorry England lost.

tuvamoodyson · 14/07/2024 22:20

Well done England in getting to the final…I’m just glad they didn’t lose on penalties, that must be worse!

Twotooto · 14/07/2024 22:21

RivkaTheBold · 14/07/2024 20:53

Oh I thought the Irish didn't mind us. I thought it was just some of the Scotties that felt so strongly about the footie.

Bugger. Don't tell me the Welsh feel the same?!

They absolutely loathe us. I’m on holiday and was surrounded by Irish people supporting Spain purely because they don’t want England to win. I don’t think I’d feel so irked by it if it was for a positive reason, like loads of people (my own children included) wanted Argentina to win the World Cup because of Messi but this was purely because they hate the English.

Rainbowsponge · 14/07/2024 22:22

Scotland can go back to begging money and complaining lol

GrandTheftWalrus · 14/07/2024 22:22

I was gutted England didn't win the last euros as I'd have won £100 from a free bet! I could've cashed out at 60 but I honestly thought they'd have done it.

Maybe that's why I'm more annoyed haha.

TheSixQuarks · 14/07/2024 22:23

Bad luck England. Disappointed for you and your team. 💔

Beginningless · 14/07/2024 22:29

Shame for them OP. I agree that it’s nice to support England when we are no longer in it, that headline in the National was really embarrassing for us.

Irish here. We don't hate English people.

We do tend to support the other team against them in football though. It's partly history, partly neighbourly rivalry and largely the carry on of the English media and (historically) a section of the English fans.

This English team under Southgate actually has a lot more respect in Ireland than any other English team I can remember.

RivkaTheBold · 14/07/2024 22:39

The best team won but at least our boys had a go.

Well done Spain, we will see you at the World cup ⚽️

We don’t loathe you, we just begrudge you success in soccer.

OhcantthInkofaname · 14/07/2024 22:48

US and supporting England.

Bloom15 · 14/07/2024 22:48

Love it!

DH is Everton and I am Liverpool. DS loves Man City so happy to support others here - I even helped DS celebrate Man City winning the league, against my own team lol

Gcsunnyside23 · 14/07/2024 23:13

I'm Irish and I supported Spain. But I will say I thought they played well and can hold their head up a bit. Better team won

Gcsunnyside23 · 14/07/2024 23:15

Mystro202 · 14/07/2024 19:47

I'm Irish and wishing England well! I can't see why there is so much bitterness, the team has done so well to get this far..something Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales haven't done in a long time!! Ireland didn't even qualify ffs 🤭

You can't see why the Irish wouldn't support the English?? You absolutely can't be Irish 🙈

can you elaborate a bit on what it is that you dislike about how the media reacts to English success? I’m struggling to understand why it is not acceptable for the English media to celebrate an English win. What is it about the way they do it that you object to?

TimeandMotion · 14/07/2024 23:22

Can all the Irish who say it is standard to support whoever is against England explain why Roy Keane seems pretty pro-England in his punditry? Is it just because he’s being paid?

Yes it's because he is being paid.

You will see from videos he does not celebrate the Rnglish goals the way the others do.

He is a proud Cork man.

And this is exactly why we don't want you to win

BitOutOfPractice · 14/07/2024 23:59

Roy Keane is definitely NOT pro English 😂

Though in fairness I think he pretty much hates everyone and everything!

Well you see you say in your post the "English" media. But the UK is actually made up of 4 nations : England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So the media in the UK theoretically generally is meant to cover the whole of the UK but it always assumes everyone is an England supporter. It assumes everyone in eg Scotland must be ecstatic about an England win as though we don't have national representation of our own.

I had to turn off the Today programme after England's win in the semi final because of the way the presenters were banging on about the win - as though all their listeners were English and sharing their ecstasy. Their remit is actually to broadcast to all the UK , not just England. And to be honest they were so ott you'd have thought England had won the tournament already.

Yes of course English sports fans have a right to celebrate their sporting achievements but it's the way we get it rammed down our throats whether we like it or not.

Btw it's a standing joke here that Andy Murray was always a Scottish sportsman when he lost but suddenly became British when he won.

You do realise that Scotland pay more into the Exchequer coffers than they get back?
You've been living off North Sea Oil money for years which is why everyone at Westminster was so desperate to stop independence.

watersoul · 14/07/2024 19:42

If only you could spell it.

She’s joking. It’s a MN injoke, like when people say they are “fumming” about something. I don’t remember what the original post was but it’s probably somewhere in classics. Maybe a pisstake of Jo Frost?
