Well you see you say in your post the "English" media. But the UK is actually made up of 4 nations : England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So the media in the UK theoretically generally is meant to cover the whole of the UK but it always assumes everyone is an England supporter. It assumes everyone in eg Scotland must be ecstatic about an England win as though we don't have national representation of our own.
I had to turn off the Today programme after England's win in the semi final because of the way the presenters were banging on about the win - as though all their listeners were English and sharing their ecstasy. Their remit is actually to broadcast to all the UK , not just England. And to be honest they were so ott you'd have thought England had won the tournament already.
Yes of course English sports fans have a right to celebrate their sporting achievements but it's the way we get it rammed down our throats whether we like it or not.
Btw it's a standing joke here that Andy Murray was always a Scottish sportsman when he lost but suddenly became British when he won.
