Is this London hotel in an OK area?

Is this hotel in an OK area? It’s the Hilton London Metropol on Edgware Road Hotel here
We’re going on Wednesday and found this hotel is £200 cheaper than the one we have in Kensington. Just don’t know whether it’s in a dodgy part of London.

I’ve booked the Edgware Road option. It ended up being £305 per night, meaning a saving of £250. I can’t justify spending so much more if Edgware Road is safe.

"Premier Inn define anyone over 15 as an adult, meaning that there would be three adults as DD1 is 17. They have a maximum of 2 adults on the booking site."

Premier inn never ask the age of a teenager, in fact a lot have self check in stations now anyway.

An apartment might be better though? This one looks good and it's much cheaper.

It's safe. Fantastic Persian food around there.

Right next to Paddington Basin with lots of places to eat and drink. Only 15 minute walk to Oxford Street and Hyde Park and excellent public transport from Paddington.

It's fine, I've stayed there with DD. Multi-cultural as others have said. Really close to transport links for getting around the city - Edgware Road tube is across the road - both options. And Paddington about 15 min walk away.

When you go to their website to book, it asks for the ages of the children and state it’s 5-15 years. DD1 would probably get away with it as she looks younger but wouldn’t want to risk it. I’m useless when it comes to breaking rules! 😀

It’s absolutely fine and very central for Oxford St and Hyde Park. I used to live about 15 mins walk away and worked nearby for ages.

My only advice if you are travelling around from there is to bear in mind there are two Edgware Rd stations covering different tube lines. Loads of buses to good locations run down Edgware Rd.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 14/07/2024 16:28

There’s a great view of the Shard from the roof top bar.

Oceangreyscale · 14/07/2024 16:47

Expensive hotels! When I put my fairly central house in London on Airbnb it's about that much and it's a 4 bed house with a garden! Although no room service...

Barbadossunset · 14/07/2024 16:55

But apart from pick pocketing there aren’t any unsafe areas in the centre any more.

There are lots of mugging and phone theft all over London.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 14/07/2024 17:07

It's a perfectly good area of London to stay in. Very close to Paddington Station and Edgware Road tube. Bear in mind if you want to use the Bakerloo line, the tube entrance is across the road, not the one behind M&S.

Paddington Basin is a vibrant area with lots of restaurants and it's pedestrianised around the canal.

I've stayed in the Premier Inn at Paddington Basin and attended a work meeting at the Hilton Metropole. I thought the Hilton staff were excellent.

TheSquareMile · 14/07/2024 17:09

@theferry

It's not in a dodgy part of London and is well placed for transport, being so close to Paddington. It looks fine to me.

(I wouldn't describe anywhere in London as dodgy, to be honest).

Helpimfalling · 14/07/2024 17:11

Zeeze · 14/07/2024 13:02

The area around Paddington Basin is quite nice now and there are loads of buses into central London and a couple of tube lines. Paddington Station also within walking distance.

There is a large Middle East expat community around Edgware Road but I have never seen anything dodgy particularly. Shepherds Bush Green near to other one is like the Wild West some evenings!

🤦‍♀️

Singleandproud · 14/07/2024 17:14

We've stayed in PI with interconnecting rooms which are great. You might find 2 rooms cheaper in a PI than the Hilton. PI in Richmond is great and opposite Kew gardens, the one in Stratford is also brilliantly placed. Both sufficiently outside central London to beich cheaper than central but with excellent transport connections.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 14/07/2024 17:19

The price is probably going up as we're all looking at it!
By chance, I walked past this last night at 11pm by myself as I walked back from the Kylie concert in Hyde Park. It felt absolutely fine and it is so well located. Yes, there's a nice vibe around South Ken but I think I'd pick this one. Especially for that price difference

Not compared to a lot of European cities.

Barbadossunset · 14/07/2024 17:24

Not compared to a lot of European cities.

Maybe that’s because most people don’t bother to report thefts as they know the police won’t do anything about it.
Op, don’t walk about in the street using your phone as they are easy to snatch.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/07/2024 17:26

The actual hotel isn't very nice. It's absolutely enormous and extremely busy.

I don't think that's the case. I've visited London 100+ times, family members used to live there and friends still do. Nobody I know has ever had any issues. I'm also on a lot of London Facebook groups, trip advisor forums etc and it's pretty much never mentioned. Go on similar groups for Barcelona, Rome, Portugal etc and it's a different story.

Not saying it never happens but it's certainly not that prevalent.

Barbadossunset · 14/07/2024 18:00

Yupthatsit have you been on the ‘Nextdoor’ app? There are reports of muggings, thefts and phone snatching - often from school children - every day.
You are fortunate that neither you nor your family have had any issues. We’ve had our car broken into , my step daughter has had her photo snatched twice and my daughter had a very unpleasant experience being followed by a man back to her flat.

I'd still say it's extremely rare

CandiedPrincess · 14/07/2024 19:47

Nah it's not that rare @Yupthatsit that is roughly 6 phones stolen per 1000 people in London, with higher frequencies in certain areas.

TheWoodlanders · 14/07/2024 13:34

I would definitely stay there instead if possible. It’s a much, much nicer area and walking distance of so many things. Edgeware road isn’t a bad area but it’s unattractive and not close to nice places to visit. Oxford Street for example is awful (Londoner).

But easily walkable to Marylebone, Mayfair, Hyde Park, Paddington, Regents Park. I think it's a great location. Connaught Street is lovely (Londoner also).

Totallymessed · 14/07/2024 20:10

I'm disappointed. On first reading, I thought the first line under Highlights said "Included with your stay: cat". But it's cot 😪

Madcats · 14/07/2024 20:48

Over the years I have stayed at most of the Marriotts and Hiltons in central London. Even the architect would struggle to like the Metropole, but it is a good quality hotel on the inside.

If you are arriving via Paddington, I would just walk along Praed St, rather than getting the tube to Edgware Rd. There is an amusing clock with a cleaner in it, and a table of bronze animals on the corner of Praed St and Eastbourne Terrace.

If you have some spare time on your hands, it is worth going for a walk along Paddington Basin and round to Little Venice.

This bus map might be of interest/use:

Hotel prices have really shot up!

theferry · 14/07/2024 20:53

Thanks everyone for your opinions. It’s good to have saved a bit of money.

@Madcats we’re going into Kings Cross (long 6 hour journey). It seems reasonably straightforward to get to the hotel via the tube.
