Is this London hotel in an OK area?

Is this hotel in an OK area? It’s the Hilton London Metropol on Edgware Road Hotel here
We’re going on Wednesday and found this hotel is £200 cheaper than the one we have in Kensington. Just don’t know whether it’s in a dodgy part of London.

It’s central. Near to Edgware Road and a flyover. Not the nicest area but you are no more or less likely to be robbed than anywhere else in central London. Reasonable transport links.

theferry · 14/07/2024 12:59

@Zeeze thank you. Not been in London for years. The savings are pretty big if we swap to this hotel.

Is the Kensington one the one near Shepherds Bush Roundabout? That is equivalent in terms of a dodgy area in my opinion. Also further from central London.

Kensington one is near Gloucester Road underground.

The area around Paddington Basin is quite nice now and there are loads of buses into central London and a couple of tube lines. Paddington Station also within walking distance.

There is a large Middle East expat community around Edgware Road but I have never seen anything dodgy particularly. Shepherds Bush Green near to other one is like the Wild West some evenings!

Zeeze · 14/07/2024 13:03

Ah sorry. Gloucester Road is nicer but boring and loads of muggers frequent South Kensington according to Next Door. I live a bit further north.

poshsnobtwit · 14/07/2024 13:03

It's fine OP, I've stayed in neighbouring streets. It's very multicultural (which for many people equals 'rough') and has great food options. Walking distance to Oxford St, Paddington etc and very good transport links.

CandiedPrincess · 14/07/2024 13:04

I stay near Paddington Basin/Edgware Road a lot, it's fine. Stayed in Newham recently for work and feared for my life walking there at night!

Wowzel · 14/07/2024 13:04

I've stayed in that hotel and it was fine.

Blahblah34 · 14/07/2024 13:07

The hotel itself is not in the nicest spot, next to the A40, but if you walk 5 minutes in pretty much any direction you’ll be somewhere much nicer. And it’s not a dodgy area.

MaxJLHardy · 14/07/2024 13:07

Hosted the Bar Conference a few years back so if it's good enough for them. Few doors down from best kebab shop in London and there is some very stiff competition for that. Good for Hyde Park and Oxford Street.

kitsuneghost · 14/07/2024 13:12

How much is it a night?
Are you looking on a comparison site?
If so does the price you are looking at compare with other providers for the same hotel or is it much, much cheaper.

TheWoodlanders · 14/07/2024 13:13

It’s in central London. There are more or less no ‘dodgy’ areas in central London nowadays. Some of them are incredibly busy and noisy at night but that’s not a problem if you have double glazing. Other areas are unattractive. But apart from pick pocketing there aren’t any unsafe areas in the centre any more. There might be nasty hotels, but that’s a different story.

Oceangreyscale · 14/07/2024 13:13

It's fine. Lots of middle eastern restaurants. New flats and cafes in Paddington Basin. Decent transport from Paddington or a bus down the Edgware Road.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/07/2024 13:18

Not the nicest area but not dodgy. As others have said, lots of good restaurants round there!

It’s around £300 per night. The Kensington option is £350 per night.

Edgware option now up by £10 per night. The price is changing before my eyes!

Have you considered premier inn?

The premier inn at Waterloo is a great location for a trip as walkable to many areas. It’s right outside London eye. It’s usually £200-230 a night

That seems awfully pricey even by London standards.

poshsnobtwit · 14/07/2024 13:29

Behind the hotel are lots of lovely little streets and mews if you like to fantasize about living there like that sort of thing.
There's a really nice restaurant called Sarchnar Kebab about a 5/10 minute walk up the road. It does authentic Kurdish food (rather than a doner kebab!) and fresh bread in the tandoor. Theres always been a queue any time I went, so it must be well thought of.

They're booked up and will not accept 3 adults + 1 child

I would definitely stay there instead if possible. It’s a much, much nicer area and walking distance of so many things. Edgeware road isn’t a bad area but it’s unattractive and not close to nice places to visit. Oxford Street for example is awful (Londoner).

Caspianberg · 14/07/2024 13:42

@theferry -ah. As they definitely do family rooms that sleep 4. But that might be 2 adults max and 2 children as it’s one large room. It’s no frills, but clean. And we walked every evening to Covent Garden area for food.

Theres a travel lodge near Covent Garden, have you tried there?

Otherwise go to Gloucester rd one. You can walk to the science and history museums, and Hyde park from there.

Theres also blue orchid at tower bridge. They have family rooms which sleep 4.

Geranium1984 · 14/07/2024 13:48

South Kensington/ Gloucester road is much nicer in my opinion. Nice cafes/restaurants, close to Hyde park and kensington gardens. Big wide leafy streets, nice buildings/houses.
Paddington basin is fine will be safe but is all tall new build flats, plenty of restaurants. Depends whether you'll be spending much time in the area or is it just for sleeping?

Premier Inn define anyone over 15 as an adult, meaning that there would be three adults as DD1 is 17. They have a maximum of 2 adults on the booking site.
