Cancel holiday charge

So DH and his family decided to book an holiday for us all 2 days ago.
I now can't get the time off work.

Does anyone know if we took our names off the holiday would we get a full refund? The holiday is with TUI and was paid in full on booking it.

Best to check the TUI booking rules, it normally depends on the type of booking / how far away the holiday is. I've know people to get full refunds but also people to get nothing!

ItMustBeNiceToBeQueen · 14/07/2024 07:41

Usually the deposit isn’t refundable. You would have to check the T’s & c’s though because it depends on how close to departure you try to cancel, you may lose the lot.

Overthebow · 14/07/2024 07:44

Do you want the whole holiday to be refunded or just your and DHs places?

bumblebuz · 14/07/2024 07:45

He didn't pay a deposit just paid in full on the app.
The departure date isn't for another 11 weeks. Will have a look on TUI for more info

Just me, dh and the kids

Google says yes.
If you need to cancel, and it's more than 28 days before you travel

Footballsunday727727227 · 14/07/2024 07:49

This is their cancellation policy;
https://www.tui.co.uk/destinations/faq/before-you-go/changes-and-cancellations#how-much-will-it-cost-to-transfer-my-holiday

Although your DH didn’t pay a deposit there will be a standard amount that is included that would be the deposit, you need to way up the cost of changing her dates vs losing the deposit

Bjorkdidit · 14/07/2024 07:50

You'll have to check Tui's rules about loss in the event of cancellation. You're under 12 weeks so it's likely you'll lose a lot or all of the money.

Alternatives could be that either DH takes DC and you don't go, or move the date for an admin fee.

bumblebuz · 14/07/2024 07:54

Thanks all. Changing the dates isn't an option either

OP posts:
OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 14/07/2024 07:54

Given that it's 11 weeks away it's probably possible to make changes. There would be some admin fee/some fraction of the cost retained but most of the money would be refunded. It will depend on exact Ts&Cs and the longer it's been since booking the more likely it is to be more expensive to cancel - it's not unusual to have a 72hr cooling off period where you can change your mind but then changes get much more difficult and expensive so DH should get on the phone right now.

Bjorkdidit · 14/07/2024 08:02

Well I've looked at the cancellation rules and it's not clear. If you cancel more than 70 days away, it says you only lose the full deposit (they say this because people pay low deposits which isn't the same) which is implied to be less than 30% according to the scale of charges.

But they also say that if you book in 12 weeks, you have to pay in full at the time of booking and all bookings have to be paid in full by 12 weeks before you go whenever you've booked.

It wouldn't make sense to allow someone who booked a year in advance a larger refund than someone who booked 11 weeks in advance like you have so you might be able to get 70-80% of your money back, but it would depend on the type of accommodation - obviously if something like a villa has been booked, that won't be refunded due to underoccupancy.

Whoever booked the holiday needs to get on the phone to Tui ASAP or message them to ask the question about the cost of cancellation.

How come the holiday was booked before you knew you could go? But if changing the date isn't an option and you'd lose too much money by cancelling, how would everyone feel about everyone except you going, and you just having a quiet week home alone (obviously you'd still be at work, but you could please yourself the rest of the time).

bumblebuz · 14/07/2024 08:17

It's apartments 2 separate ones.
I have no idea why they booked it, I told them to let me make sure I can get the time off.

It's not an option for dh and the kids to go without me. The kids are only 3 and 4 so would be hard work for dh to have them for a week abroad without me

OP posts:
MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 14/07/2024 08:25

Almost certainly you won't be able to remove your names if it is a joint booking.
Best option would be lose deposit for everyone on the booking, usually 60pp.

But the fact you had to pay in full concerns me.

mitogoshi · 14/07/2024 08:31

Call them but so close you will loose a significant amount unless you can persuade them to change the date eg to next year. Why can't he take the kids? There's family to help him

bumblebuz · 14/07/2024 08:33

There was an option to pay a deposit I or pay in full so he paid in full

OP posts:
Bjorkdidit · 14/07/2024 08:34

He should also be able to look after his own DC of course, and perhaps it would also be a good lesson about the consequences of his actions in not waiting to book until it was known the OP could get the time off work.

BobnLen · 14/07/2024 08:37

I wouldn't worry about paying in full, they will still refund you any if it is due back. If you do decide to cancel there will be a sliding scale of payments due on top of lost deposit so cancel as quickly as possible and then it may only be deposit lost. Though there maybe also a cooling off period, time is the essence in either case.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 14/07/2024 08:39

Right, I've just read all their T&C's.

Ianal obviously but normally good with t&C's.

You will lose your deposit providing 70+ days.
I can't find for definite but it looks like you will have to cancel the whole holiday so deposit will be loss per person.

And this is the worrying part. Tui don't have fixed deposits, some are 60pp but the highest I've found is £640pp.
I can't find out what the deposit is if booked with less than 12 weeks. There wouldn't have been the option to book just the deposit as full payment is due at 12 weeks.
The paperwork should say the deposit amount.

Simonjt · 14/07/2024 08:40

Would it not be an option for just your husband and the children to go?

Overthebow · 14/07/2024 08:42

You’ll likely have to cancel the whole holiday, I don’t think they usually let you take some of the names off. I’d get your DH to take the kids by himself.

BobnLen · 14/07/2024 08:43

With the deposit you need to find cost of full deposit not the special low deposit you may have paid, it will be the full deposit which is lost.

JokoKitten · 14/07/2024 09:18

Has he said that he wouldn't take them? Maybe it's something to think about.

RivkaTheBold · 14/07/2024 09:22

You will probably find the holiday cost increases if you take some people off. It's weird how that happens. If there's free child places etc.

You'll lose your deposit but should get a % of the rest back but you'll need to do it asap.

RivkaTheBold · 14/07/2024 09:23

It might be better for him to go with the family and they can help him with your DCs.

Doggymummar · 14/07/2024 09:25

I wouldn't think you would get a refund as you gave to pay in full at 12 weeks. You might be able to roll it over to next week. Best thing is to ring them quick. Some allow you a cooling off period if 24 hours.
