Are water wipes really worth the price over other brands?

Ordering in bulk so we are prepped for when baby arrives. Everyone talks about water wipes. I can see they have the fewest number of ingredients but are they worth the price over another brand? Also see Amazon Mama Bear wipes are recommended - has anyone used these?

(I’ve thought of reusable ones but I honestly don’t think it’s for us.)

Thanks :)

I wouldn’t order anything in bulk before the baby arrives, you don’t know what you will get on with.
For me water wipes are worth it for at least the first 6 months or so. I used most other brands but found them not as soft, more dry therefore harsher on their skin or harder to get out of the packet. When my toddler turned about 7/8 months or so I switched to the Aldi ones. Now I have a 6 month old I still use water wipes on them.
I do know some people who say they never noticed a difference between cheaper brands though.

Honestly they're no different to Sainsbury's own brand ones. I wouldn't waste money on them.

Also interested to know! We use aquawipes which are very slightly cheaper than water wipes and I prefer them (they are wetter which makes clean ups a lot easier!!)

Yeah, I'd second not ordering anything in bulk. My son loved Pampers nappies and Tesco wipes, but a friends' only tolerated Sainsbury's nappies. You've no idea what will suit baby or you at this stage. Water wipes weren't any different to Tesco wipes for us, or Sainsbury's ones if we needed them.

Also check the dates on the recommendations. Ingredients change a lot over time - especially in the last 18 months or so, with the push on sustainability and reducing plastics, so people who used the wipes before then and left reviews/have recommended them to you may have used a completely different product. I know Aldi & Amazon wipes changed quite a lot, and Lidl nappies, I think?

peachgreen · 12/07/2024 08:58

My daughter had a terrible allergic reaction to the Amazon wipes. Personally I do think Water Wipes are worth it, they’re so much wetter! But there’s probably others out there which are similar – I just never found them!

UnravellingTheWorld · 12/07/2024 08:59

I was given a pack, and I personally didn't think they wiped as well as Tesco's wipes

neleh87 · 12/07/2024 09:00

I've had one or two packs of water wipes but didn't find them better for the money. I like the aldi mamia or lidl own brand 99% water ones. DS has sensitive skin and they've never caused any issues. As pp said I wouldn't bulk buy. I did have about 6 packs ready but I used water and cotton wool for the first month, then after that just picked them up in the weekly shop.

fieldsofbutterflies · 12/07/2024 09:01

Buying anything in bulk before the baby even arrives sounds daft to me.

What if they're allergic or something?

Devilsmommy · 12/07/2024 09:01

Pampers fresh and clean. They're perfect wetness and don't rip easy like the supermarket ones. I'd give Huggies wipes a swerve also

Mukirinessly · 12/07/2024 09:01

I’m allergic to ordinary wipes but not the water based ones.

MammaTo · 12/07/2024 09:02

I didn’t think they wiped as easy as the Aldi ones, they were good for wiping babies face and little clean ups. But we liked the Aldi extra sensitive ones.

Don't people just use wet flannels? Are the bought ones biodegradable or destined for landfill?

Cookiedough123 · 12/07/2024 09:09

Another fan of the tesco Fred and Flo wipes.

For wiping a baby’s pooey arse? No, not usually.

OP, I found them not as good as plain cotton wool + water and on a par with Huggies/pampers sensitive non scented wipes for DS, who has a sensitive little bum.

We do! Wet cloths (some people like cheeky wipes but we have unbranded ones from The Nappy Lady) get poo off much more easily than disposable wipes. Even the midwives at the hospital were impressed that they only needed one cloth to clean all the sticky meconium off our newborn's bum. We just wash them at 60 degrees. Admittedly we also have cloth nappies so there's plenty to make up a load, but we know lots of people who use disposable nappies but washable wipes. They're also great later on when you're weaning.

TwistedSisters · 12/07/2024 09:17

The amazon mama bear ones are really wet and I think they're good , but they do have a tendency to clump together when getting them out of the pack. I second everyone else saying I wouldn't buy in bulk till baby is here, they may be allergic / you might not like them!

Metempsychosis · 12/07/2024 09:21

If you're fussy about chemicals but don't care quite enough about non-recyclable waste to go for reusables (my situation) then cotton wool balls and water is a perfectly good solution at home.

Favouritefruits · 12/07/2024 09:21

I’d definitely get a pack of water wipes for hospital so you don’t need to use water and cotton wool! When you get home just use the cheap ones they are just as good if not better.

Emsie1987 · 12/07/2024 09:25

I actually think they are too wet. As a newborn they don't like the cold and mine cried when using them as they were too wet and cold for him.

Peonies12 · 12/07/2024 09:28

Cotton wool balls and water work well. We use Cheeky Wipes reusables, I know they're not for everyone but we honestly find them so easy to use and wash, and it saves a massive amount of waste. Even if you just get them for faces/hands, not nappy changes.

Namechanger385u4p · 12/07/2024 09:33

Water wipes gave my Ds terrible rashes. He could only have the Avenoo ones (thr mildest imo) but i mostly used cotton balls as they seemed to irritate him the least.

Kinshipug · 12/07/2024 09:36

Don't bulk buy anything until you know what you like. I know lots of people do have preferences, but I've always thought wipes are wipes 🤷‍♀️
We mostly used a wet flannel at home anyway. Gentler and did a better job.

QueenBee22 · 12/07/2024 09:48

Not worth the money at all. I found them very wet and cold and they actually used to make my babies more alert at nappy changes at night. I used Huggies for nappy changes and the Lidl water wipes for cleaning baby's face and they are perfect.

RosaBaby2 · 12/07/2024 10:03

I'm also here to say reusable wipes/face cloths win every time! We also used cloth nappies, even if just for night time to see you right through they're fabulous.

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 12/07/2024 10:07

I had a bulk of 12 packs of water wipes and they were sopping wet!

I never bought them again, it leaves babies bums wet through.
