I think that Biden is in denial, at least in part, due to his condition. That is common in a lot of dementia sufferers.

He could either be persuaded to step down or told that if he didn’t, he would be removed for medical reasons. Obviously, standing down with dignity would be best.

The current odds are 3/5 favourite Trump, 5/1 Kamala Harris, 9/1 Biden, 28/1 both Michelle Obama and Gavin Newsom, meaning that Biden is odds on not be the democratic candidate.

Biden‘s ego must be enormous to be insisting on continuing. Yes he’s a figurehead but one with an awful lot of impact as most voters will be affected by this kind of show of lack of coherence.

He ought to put his country first. It’s his job.
USA is heading for a fascist dictatorship, and it’s like a slow moving car crash. Horrific.

I don’t know where people get the idea that U.S presidents are figureheads.

They have an immense amount of real power, far more than our PM. And it isn’t theoretical, it is real.

If the democrats wanted to run someone else they would. They haven’t. They could quite easily claim to have found porn on his laptop or something and remove him but they haven’t. It’s understood nowadays that presidents have very little power to do anything anyway so technically forest gump could be president and no one would be able to tell the difference

What mechanism is there for removing him as the candidate? From what I've read, there isn't one. He has to stand down himself. Obviously there can be a lot of pressure, but if it came to it, he can't actually be removed by anyone else?

Happy to be corrected though.

Biden is the same age as my parents he's nearly 82 wether he has dementia or not his health and cognition can decline quite rapidly at that age and the same goes for Trump
My previously healthy Dad who thought nothing of cycling over 20 miles ,well into his 70,s has aged a lot over the past 3/4 years and my mum has longterm disabilities anyway Neither of them should be running for president.

MaggieFS · 12/07/2024 14:49

The thing is he could quit now, retain dignity and have a lot of kudos in his legacy for the lead in the response to Russia in Ukraine. The longer this shambles goes on, the more the legacy erodes.

My understanding is that there isn't a procedural way to remove him, but there are ways, particularly from a fundraising pov which is where Clooney's comments are so damning. But he needs to get out soon to give the Dems a chance to pick someone new in good time.

Ha ha ha I had to laugh at your error over Kamala Harris's name! 😂

They dont need a procedural mechanism, Harold Holt the Australian PM just went for a swim and never came back 🤣
