Someone’s parked in our allocated space

Not sure what to do as it doesn’t happen often but when it does it’s so inconvenient!
We live in a small flat with 7 parking spaces (one for each household) we have two cars so we park one in our allocated numbered space and one we have to park down the road.
Nobody usually parks in anyone’s spaces because there have been warnings at the start from the landlord stating nobody is allowed to park in anybody’s space.
last night my husband took the car that’s usually parked in the parking space to work and he doesn’t get home till after 12am ish when he returned he found a car parked in our space, this never usually happens regardless how long it’s empty nobody normally parks there.
So he had to park down the main road where our other car was, this meant I had to rush my child to walk him down to the main road to get him in school on time, it’s also a busy road and hard to get out off so it was a massive inconvenience! The car is still there now at nearly 11am I don’t know who it belongs to and I need to do a big food shop which I can’t do when my car is parked far away 🫣 I just can’t believe how inconsiderate some people are!

@Flowerpowerr1 Probably too late now, bur has your block got a doorbell in the lobby for all flats? Could you just ring each bell to ask if its them??

VJBR · 11/07/2024 19:02

Flowerpowerr1 · 11/07/2024 17:39

I rang everyone’s door bells most didn’t answer apart from two who said they didn’t know who’s it was “yeah yeah”.
I can’t see who parks in the drive because I don’t have a view of the front of the flats so I have to physically go out and check.
Ive just checked downstairs and the car is gone hallelujah I think they understood how angry I was because of my note haha.
But I still don’t know who the car belongs to 😤

What did you put in the note.

It's not about being wimp or incapable. As a lone female OP could put herself in potential danger knocking on doors of people she doesn't know. Like it or not it's a consideration we all have to make.

seriously? Knocking on her NEIGHBOURS door in the middle of the day? How on earth do you think female delivery drivers, fast food delivery, post women, electoral candidates manage the risk of knocking on hundreds of doors daily?

Let alone the millions of women who live alone and have to answer the door to -gasp - UNKNOWN men, or even have tradesmen IN THEIR HOUSE!

Do you really think someone is going to kick off if she asks "Hi, just checking if you know whose car is parked in space 7?"

Life must be so frightening if you consider stepping outside your own door a risk.

Mumsnet goes mental about things like this. Here's what you do. You leave a note and continue with your life. You don't call the police, you don't sound your horn until the owner arrives, you don't pick up dog faeces. Clutching your pearls is up to you.

This. So many of the other responses are absolutely batshit. You've all gone mad I tell you. No wonder the police are so stretched! Have a cup of tea and it'll be gone before long

If all else fails report to police as an abandoned car!

the police dont deal with abandoned cars unless they are causing an obstruction, they certainly do no deal with cars in private parking spaces. you can call the police and verify its not stolen, but its the council for abandoned cars and even then they wont touch it as its on private lane. the land owner or the OP is pretty much stuck with this car until the owner is found

Vaseline all over their windscreen.

What’s wrong with you?!

Sennelier1 · 12/07/2024 18:54

I hope you wrote down the license plate number, type of car etc., maybe pictures? Because if that CF returns for a day of free&easy parking you'll know it's the same one and take action. Like vaseline on every window.

What’s wrong with you?!

Someone parked in her car parking space.

Isinglass20 · 12/07/2024 20:29

I really wouldn’t damage this car. Your flat number is on parking space and they could return and damage your’s in retaliation and no insurance cover on private car parks. They know who you are. You don’t know who they are.

Jeannie88 · 12/07/2024 20:45

Put a note on car, contact landlord, meanwhile not much you can do. CF! Xx

Knick on the other six doors - you never know there might be a reasonable explanation?

This made me laugh as I read it as 'kick in the other six doors - you there know there might be a reasonable explanation'.

😁

PrincessMee · 13/07/2024 10:15

The police won't care as it's private land I imagine. The landlord won't be able to do anything either. Put a note on the car telling them this is an allocated space and don't do it again. You can keep an eye out for the driver. This is the most common problem in parking areas and there is nothing anyone can do about it unless you call all the other residents to find out if it is a visitor.

GabriellaFaith · 14/07/2024 21:08

We used to have this a lot, but I guess different as the same 2 cars repeatedly.

I got fed up of it. So, one day, it meant I missed uni that day 🙈 but I blocked them into the space. I knew when they needed to go they would probably ask me to move.

They did indeed, except I didn't answer the door. It was then Saturday. I left my car there and my blinds all closed still all day. All night.

They never parked there again.

No violence, possibly petty lol. But it worked, and I felt they had a taste of the inconvenience they caused me back at them 🙊

Welshmonster · 15/07/2024 10:52

Ask your landlord if you can put one of those folding bollards in. Yes it’s a pain when you get home etc but better than finding parking miles away. Or get a cone and place it. Are you allowed to paint

DO NOT PARK HERE on the space

What would be the best thing to write on the note? I need some suggestions!

Whatever you write on the note, make sure you attach it to the windscreen with staples!😁

What would be the best thing to write on the note? I need some suggestions!

@Flowerpowerr1 “this is not visitor parking and your car is in my allocated space. I understand you may not have known but please move it and don’t do it again. As it’s been X days of me having to park down the road I have had to advise the landlord”

Is there not a facebook or whatsapp group for the flats you can post on?

RedditFinder · 15/07/2024 12:05

I’m sorry but you don’t sound like a good neighbour. You’ve never bothered to say hello to a lot of them, claiming that it is they that are unfriendly.
I think your time would be better spent speaking to real life humans than whinging online.

Wherearethewaves · 15/07/2024 20:37

Stick a very polite notice to their windscreen with a lot of good quality gaffer tape...the inconvenience of getting the glue off will be an excellent deterrent for next time...

LutonBeds · 15/07/2024 20:44

Check on apps like Your Parking Space, people have been known to rent out spaces they don’t own, especially if near an airport/train station/sports venue. I used to work at Manchester Airport and it happened a few times in the local area. If you see it (rent my driveway is another one), report to the app.

LlynTegid · 15/07/2024 20:48

Whilst the car was moved and you have checked it was taxed and passed an MOT, I agree with the suggestion of checking parking companies. I assume there is no notice which you could argue if not read means poor eyesight can be alleged.

Ee1498 · 15/07/2024 21:46

If this isn't a one off, I'd install a folding parking bollard. They're simple to install and would solve the problem.

Pickles2306 · 16/07/2024 07:13

I used to have simlar situations years ago and it's usually down to sheer ignorance or laziness BUT one time the car causing issues (blocking a space for days but parked nicely!) had actually been dumped following an armed robbery so it was quickly removed by the police forensics tow truck!

CatMumSlave · 16/07/2024 08:04

This happens to me lots. The last time it was there 5 days. I saw a 20 off year old lad working on it.

He said he bought the car for his girlfriend and was fixing it up but didn't want to park near his house 😡😡
