Help I have lost my voice and got an interview for my dream job tomorrow

Just that really, lost through a combination of cough and cold and singing along to loudly to Rick Astley at Lytham festival last night.

What can I do to make it come back by 230 tomorrow?

I can't postpone the interview for various reasons and it's in person. I definitely don't have COVID because I had it a few weeks ago and I've done a couple of tests, plus I feel good apart from not being able to speak.

Help please I can't respond to questions with interpretive dance !

Lots of honey and lemon, face over a bowl of boiling water and breath it in. Rest your voice today.

rookiemere · 07/07/2024 11:17

I have honey and lemon strepsils. Got a 4 hr trip before I get home .

Don't speak a word today!

viccat · 07/07/2024 11:19

Vocalzone lozenges work well. You can get them from Boots.

InfoSecInTheCity · 07/07/2024 11:20

Don't give in to the need to whisper. If you have to say anything then try to talk normally even if it sounds croaky. If you change the way you speak to try to whisper then you'll strain a different part of your voice box and make it worse.

Lots of fluids, ibuprofen for swelling and warm drinks where possible.

AudiobookListener · 07/07/2024 11:23

I agree with do not speak a word today, plus keep well hydrated.

rookiemere · 07/07/2024 11:25

I have been writing notes to my friend and thankfully read about the not whispering thing. It's just so frustrating argh.

I didn't know about ibuprofen I have been taking paracetamol so I will buy some and switch to that.

Paracetamol is a pain reliever
Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory

So if you have pain caused by something like a muscle or tendon strain ibuprofen is likely to be more effective because it reduces the swelling.

More likely to have side effects with ibuprofen though, particularly stomach related so make sure you don't take them on an empty stomach.

Vocalzones!

Giggorata · 07/07/2024 11:36

I agree about the treatment and remedies, and by trying to talk normally tomorrow.
It will certainly make your interview memorable, and that can't be bad.

I had a similar situation years ago, interviewing for a dream job while recovering from a car crash. I had a huge black eye and other bruises, plus it was up a long flight of stairs, which took ages for me to negotiate.
Perhaps it was the sympathy vote, but I got the job!

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 07/07/2024 12:32

Another vote for Vocalzone pastilles. They’re very effective.

If it’s a dry cough I’d get a cough suppressant mixture such as the Robitussin and I’d take a decongestant.

Go to a pharmacy and explain (via a note or type on your phone) and they should be able to load you up with what you need.

I wouldn’t normally suggest all that medication but it’s a one off.

Hoppinggreen · 07/07/2024 12:34

Nothing constructive to add but was Rick Astley good? We are going tonight
And good luck for the interview

Cerialkiller · 07/07/2024 12:35

Codene is a cough suppressant (apparently, it's not been very effective on mine today) just be wary of doubling up on paracetamol if you get cocodamol.

rookiemere · 07/07/2024 12:39

@Giggorata well done , I do feel it's kind of meant to be, I applied when tipsy as only found the role on closing date and had sons prize giving afternoon and evening .

@ColonelRhubarbBikini and others for the list of medication, yes will go and get all of that. This is definitely not the time for half measures.

He was supporting Madness at Lytham start delayed because of the football, he was excellent travesty to have him as a supporting act !

Reminds me of a time I went for an interview and due to an ear infection in both ears I could hardly hear what they were saying. I did inform them at the beginning and apologised in advance if I asked them to repeat themselves or misheard, but I was very keen on the position so didn’t want to miss the interview. The interview was comical, and I am pretty sure I gave wrong answers sometimes because I didn’t hear the question correctly.

tbh I think it worked in my favour 😂 as I got the job.

RandomMess · 07/07/2024 12:42

Gargle with soluble aspirin. Anti inflammatory right to the throat.

lazarusb · 07/07/2024 12:43

Get some real honey (not in a lozenge) and fresh lemons and have in hot water as often as you can. It really helps. Also keep your throat as warm as possible, scarves, hot water bottle on your chest etc.

Best of luck for the interview!

rookiemere · 07/07/2024 12:46

Thank you everyone just need to get home ( in the motorhome atm) and out to get some of these remedies!

No listening to Rick Astley for the next 24 hrs, only Gregorian chant. That should do it.

notprincehamlet · 07/07/2024 12:50

Veering OT but I loved him doing Smiths' songs at last year's glasto

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 07/07/2024 12:50

I went for an interview once with no voice and had to whisper the answers. I got the job though! Good luck 🤞 🍀

If you can get to a large boots or a music shop, vocalzones are amazing, saved so many performances for professionals
