If you’re quite short, what car do you drive?

I’m looking at getting a little run around car for me as I just can’t drive the Toyota we have as I just can’t see out of it, no matter how much I adjust the seat / use a cushion. I’m only 4ft 11 and just want something small and economical that I can see out of! Any recommendations?

I’m 5ft 4 (with very short legs) and drive an Octavia estate. I find the big cars generally have much better visibility. We have a small car too and we test drove a few small cars but the visibility in the big estate can’t be beaten. The other main difference which makes it so much easier to drive is that it’s automatic! You don’t need to sit so close to the pedals as you don’t need to depress the clutch full to the floor, which means you can focus more adjusting the seat to your visibility rather than reaching the pedals.

I recently started driving in a Honda Jazz Crosstar

Sophie3003 · 07/07/2024 08:43

I am 4ft 11 and have previously had a corsa, fiesta and a mini. I now have a Vauxhall Grandland (so bigger) due to expecting my second baby. I find it has got easier as car seats mostly move up and down (beyond the forward and back) and this makes it easier to reach and also gives you more height to see and sit a lot higher.

5'1" currently drive a Tesla Model Y

Previous 3 were Mercedes GLC, BMW convertible, Ford Kuga

As a small person I don't like small cars, I don't feel safe
Visibility wise I much prefer a higher up Crossover/SUV
Although there is no better visibility than a convertible with the top down! 😁

5'2" and a BMW 1 series. Drive it no prob, but I like a laid back driving position. My shorter teen DD can't drive it though as she feels she can't see properly because the bucket seats make her sit too far back (even with the seat really close to the wheel). It's not a great fit for her at 5'1" and nothing of her padding wise 🤣

I wonder if this is a more general BMW thing? I don't like driving DH's i4. It surprises me that a fairly expensive car with loads of toys has far less seat and steering column adjustment than my Skoda Kodiaq which ok is not a cheap car, but not in the same price bracket as DH's! His doesn't have adjustable seat belt height either which is a bit uncomfortable for me even as a passenger. I can drive it if I have to* *but I would never do so by choice. I feel like I"m lying down too much no matter what I do with the seat!

Ladybughoping · 07/07/2024 13:33

I’m 5ft 1 but I actually prefer to drive big cars rather than small as I find you can raise the seat etc. I’m currently in a Jag E type, but have had evoques and quashquais as well.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 07/07/2024 14:04

Yes I found that with bucket seats and my height. Impossible to get a decent driving position.
I was surprised at it was a tiny ford ka.

The fiesta had good height adjustability and I can adjust the steering column. No idea if that's common on all cars.

I also think there's a massive difference between 5' 3 and under 5 foot.
3" does make a big difference!

Tidypidy · 07/07/2024 14:18

I'm 5'2" and enjoy driving dd's mini. Feels quite nippy due to its size. Alternatively, I also love driving our caravelle! I love sitting higher up and can easily reach the pedals without needing closest setting.

Mosaic123 · 07/07/2024 14:20

Hyundai i10. I'm 4ft 11 inches on a good day. I use a wedge cushion though! I've never had a car I can see out of without a cushion.

Min133 · 07/07/2024 14:23

I'm 4ft9 and I my cars have been a Kia Picanto, Fiat Punto and now a Fiat Tipo

Smout · 07/07/2024 15:13

4ft 101/2. I drive a Corsa

Yourinmyspot · 07/07/2024 18:27

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I learnt to drive in a Peugeot 205 and had a booster cushion as this was nearly 30 years ago and the seats didn’t move up and down then!

4’11 too!!

had a mini before, now I have a Skoda Octavia. I can also drive my husbands golf

GasPanic · 07/07/2024 19:16

What sort of Toyota is it ?

I think these days car seats are a lot more adjustable than they used to be. Partially I think because more women drive than in the old days and therefore manufacturers know they have to accommodate a greater range of driver sizes.

Back in the day my Dad always used to use a cushion, but I have never needed to.

I have never found a car, no matter how big or small that I can't adjust to my comfort.

Nellieinthebarn · 07/07/2024 19:19

Fiat Panda, cheap to run, tax and insure, easy to park, good visibility and four door, so practical as well. Downside is its not the prettiest car, its noisy and quite a hard ride.

Cobbledstreets · 07/07/2024 19:21

I’m 5ft 2 and currently taking driving lessons so I’m following along to keep track of these suggestions!

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 07/07/2024 19:24

My mums 4'10 and the little Hyundais were the only ones she could both reach the pedals comfortably and see out.

It’s an avensis. I can get high enough up but as I’m so close to the windscreen the ‘uprights’ for the windscreen really block my view and I just can’t judge the width of it.

I got a Kia Picanto in the end, and really like it. Very economical too last time I filled it up it had done 69.9 mpg.
