Easiest and cheapest way to listen to music on demand

I feel like I am way behind on this! What is the best way to listen to songs that I want, when I want? I don't want to purchase albums. If I hear a song or two on the radio that I like, I want to be able to listen to them multiple times a day for several weeks and then move on to something else. I listen either via my Alexa or on my mobile phone. I am an Amazon Prime member, but nowadays it seems as though you have to pay an additional fee (£8.99 a month or something) to access the services, bar being able to request a couple of songs at a time on Alexa before you have no option but to listen to "similar" songs and not request any more. I think Spotify is also a paid service to use it as I want. So is paying £8.99 for Prime Music the best I can do???

Pay £11.99 for spotify, well worth just asking Alexa to play xxxxx or making a playlist of all my favourites and playing them on shuffle for hours.

RaininSummer · 06/07/2024 14:39

Amazon music has loads of choice, you can make playlists, and it's free if you have Prime.

Thank you! Just checked and Amazon is 9.99 a month and (I think) lets you do these things. Seems like a lot to me but maybe I am being too tight about it all.

Thank you. I am a Prime member but the unlimited music option is no longer included. You have to pay an extra 9.99 per month (I just checked). So it lets me play a few songs of my choice via Alexa but then only plays what it wants me to hear, has adverts etc.

Yes know how you feel, DS bought me an Alexa show, i was so happy until i realised to use Spotify properly it would cost 10.99 then this went up to 11.99 but once hooked I couldn't be without it. Does prime not come with amazon music included?

Sadly it isnt- you have to pay extra per month for amazon unlimited music

I love spotify! It has podcasts as well, and a monthly allowance of fifteen free hours of audiobook.

Justlovedogs · 06/07/2024 15:54

I tried Amazon music on a free trial as I thought I might be able to cut my Spotify subscription but it never had the songs I wanted to listen to. I've just resigned myself to keeping our joint Spotify going.

Buddysbunda · 06/07/2024 15:56

I think it depends on how much you use it whether it is worth the money or not. We have Spotify family or whatever its called but all 4 of us can use Spotify for €17.99 a month. I use it everyday to listen to podcasts when dog walking and music when running, dh uses it all of the time in the car and the teens listen all of the time too.

Break it down and you will be paying 2.50 a week to listen to whatever you like whenever you like. That's pretty good value to me considering I used to spend 20quid on an album back in the day.

AuldWeegie · 06/07/2024 15:59

If you listen to radio, can you use bbc sounds to download? There’s also some music on apple podcasts.

DinosaurOfFire · 06/07/2024 16:43

Youtube usually has lots of music on it, you will get ads but it works well and is free. There is a youtube music app as well.

Justleaveitblankthen · 06/07/2024 16:48

Spotify all the way. I play it around the house on Alexa, at the Gym and even driving through my car sound system.
Also podcasts and Audi books. A massive library of stuff.
Love it!

I also have Amazon Prime but I never got along with the music, even when it was free.

BIWI · 06/07/2024 16:51

Isn't there a free version of Spotify though? You'll have to put up with ads though.

Twofifty · 06/07/2024 16:54

You can get the paid version of Spotify for free if you're okay with piracy. Google for spotify apk.

Myblindsaredown · 06/07/2024 16:58

Unless you’re really skint Spotify. I use it all the time, have multiple play lists and can put any sort of music I wish on at any time, it’s a couple of quid a week,

I have recently signed up for YouTube premium. We are having a bit of trouble sharing it in the family group. I didn't realise that you have to be the "family manager" to share so I will have to cancel and get my husband to sign up for it as he is currently "family manager" of the family group setup. After a free trial month it's £19.99.

...But I do really like it. No ads and you can download your favourite songs and listen on a shuffle play - so I can listen to my favourite songs running in the woods where I don't get enough signal for streaming. You can have it playing while your phone is asleep in your bag - background play I think it is called.

Rocknrollstar · 06/07/2024 17:06

We have a subscription to the Times and get Spotify free as part of the deal. Do you know anyone who would share the cost of Apple Music with you? 6 people can be on one subscription.

rumred · 06/07/2024 17:10

Spotify is free with ads. Also, they do regular offers - I'm on 11.99 for 3 months currently. When that finishes I'll get student discount - have you any students in the house? Think it's 5.99

SplendidPendips · 06/07/2024 19:05

Thanks all. I think one of the issues is that everyone offering this service has changed their offering significantly recently. E.g. I know you can get Spotify for free BUT not only do you have to listen to ads now you also can't play more 5 selected songs from your playlist at one 'sitting'. It stops you from skipping songs etc at that point. Unlimited music used to be included with Prime membership but now that's got restrictions too.

I've not heard of the YouTube Music app so will check that out.

I don't have anyone to share with - my kids aren't in to music and my husband listens to old music that he's downloaded from cds or podcasts that are free via the podcast app.

Just seems to annoying to pay £12 a month when I only listen to a fee songs a day when I'm.making dinner - I just want to choose which ones they are and play them on repeat if I want to etc!

Amazon is ok but I have always found Spotify is the best and thats including Apple

Rogerstreasures · 06/07/2024 19:13

If you don’t want audio books on Spotify, you can get it for £10:99 a month.

SplendidPendips · 06/07/2024 19:21

I'll weigh up Amazon for 9.99 a month v Spotify for 10.99/11.99 and it looks like those are my best options.

I'll also look for any deals.. I don't have any students in the house (mine are primary/low secondary age) but I do work in education so perhaps I can find a deal that way.

If you buy a £99 Spotify voucher from Amazon, it gives you a year of Spotify.

coodawoodashooda · 06/07/2024 20:00

I'm glad I read this thread. Thank you.

ScottBakula · 06/07/2024 20:13

I use Spotify premium, I listen to music a lot , at least 2 or 3 hrs a day . More at weekend ( I am listening to classic rock albums atm)
That along with the audio books makes it well worth the £s for me.
But if you are only listening to it for a short while you may be better off with the free version and putting up with the ads .
