Looks pretty good to me! What are people's thoughts?

Our generation paid the pensions of the previous generation, and many of us are stuck renting due to low wages in those days. So we have already paid for one generation and it is ludicrous to suggest we shouldn't get a benefit in turn.
Go berate estate agents for constantly hiking prices. I remember Nigel Planer commenting in the '90s about how housing costs increase regardless of the condition of the house, which didn't happen with cars etc.

@Pudmyboy estate agents don’t just arbitrarily hike prices. Property values have increased and continue to increase at the level and rate that they have because the system is rigged to accelerate the land values upon which new property sits, with new supply choked for this very reason. And what is one of the main sectors behind land/property investment and development? …Ah, pensions!

Whether it's true or not, the mere idea that a senior advisor said pensions need to be looked at is enough to know its not that they are thinking of increasing the state pension, or doing anything to benefit the pensioner. I don't trust the Labour party as far as I could throw them.
Watch this space. All this marvelling at his wonderful first day let's give him a clap on the back nonsense.
Shit will go down, and not in a good way.

They'll be looking at myriad different ways to save/raise money. And just because an advisor suggests something in no way means it will become policy!

TeenagersAngst · 06/07/2024 20:21

@parkrun500club you think they put everything they want to do in their manifesto?

Churchview · 06/07/2024 20:27

It's been the most convincing first day in power I've seen in my lifetime.
No drama, just prepared, knowledgeable people being placed in the right jobs. Good discipline, clear priorities and a leader with determination, intelligence and passion.

Like the 50/50 mix of women and men and the comprehensive school backgrounds. Ordinary people who understand the lives and problems of ordinary people and who are committed to serving the country. At last.

The bit about the tax on gas fuelled air balloons was bloody annoying though. I knew I couldn't trust them on air balloons.

Stellarcasted · 06/07/2024 19:18

And now everyone's talking about starmer cutting off pensions (which is a total lie), instead of the good work starmer and his party have already done and what they intend to do, which is of course what that poster wanted.

@Stellarcasted agree. The only person verbally threatening pensions is Nigel Farage by claiming that he wants to eradicate migration - and is actually totally disingenuous.

I wish he'd had the weekend off and his team.

It seems so exhausting! Up all night on election night, then a crazy whirlwind of a day yesterday.

Honestly, I would have loved for them to just have a weekend to catch their breath, be with his family and let them settle in to their new life a bit.

I hope his kids will adjust ok..

Maybe I'm a softie but it would be nice to have a more empathetic world all round.

I agree with all of this but you can only imagine the press would have eaten them alive!

Gagaandgag · 06/07/2024 20:39

I thought his first doorstep speech was brilliant. I loved the look on his face as they stood on the step - the teary eyed emotion. I think he was thinking of his parents

Not sure about the not sending as many people to prison. They might as well make shoplifting etc legal!!
Also who elected the Timpson man as an MP?

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 06/07/2024 20:59

'That Timpson man' isn't an MP. He is in the House of Lords just like David Cameron was when he was Foreign Secretary.

Bloody hell all this fawning over the man who is about to shaft everybody.
Next we will all be on our doorsteps giving him an 8pm clap.

How is he going to shaft everyone?

How is he going to shaft everyone?

And why? What has he said at any stage that makes you think shafting everyone would be a benefit him or his party?

godmum56 · 06/07/2024 21:17

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/07/2024 20:16

Is he? Today's press conference was held in the No10 dining room - Chris Mason confirmed on R4. Or do you mean he's using it for something else?

it was used throughout the covid briefings once it had been built

HRTQueen · 06/07/2024 21:28

it was a very very good first day imo

Fawning is the word. It reminds me on when Gordon Brown took over from TB as PM. Everything he said and did was fawned over initially. Look how that turned out.

Id like to know how he's going to shaft everyone too.

equisetum · 06/07/2024 21:38

Just watch and wait. All will become very clear.
And I will be the first to eat humble pie if I'm better off under Labour.

I'm not sure if I see people 'fawning'. Speaking for myself I would say that perhaps I am disproportionately pleased to see someone who looks extremely competent and decent going hard at trying to do a good job from day one. Someone who seems prepared and who has put together a group of people who are doing the same.

It's such a refreshing change after what we've become used to over the last 14 years. It's good to feel hopeful again.

BIWI · 06/07/2024 21:46

Why is being pleased with someone, and expressing that pleasure 'fawning'?

This is the new, post election, 'be careful what you wish for'.

I hope you're better off under Labour too @equisetum . From what we see to date we should all be better off in terms of public services which is a start.

What counts as better off?

I'm expecting to be worse off financially but it would be well worth it if I can actually get some care for my mum and she doesn't need to pay £15k for her hip to be replaced.

Private or state? I suspect private, unless you have an insight into this?
