If you won £35,000…

If you won £35,000, what would you do with it?

Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way with first…

I’d allocate around £10,000 to have work done on the house e.g. home repairs, such as having wall ties installed. We own a Victorian terraced house and subsidence is a common issue. We need cosmetic work done too, such as plastering and re-decorating the entire house. I also want a free standing bath and a new shower installed, along with hardwood floor fitted in the lounge!

I’d allocate another £10,000 to my S&S ISA, which is to be used as a top-up to my workplace pension.

Then the final £15,000 would be left to tick-off the big holidays on our lists! I’ve always wanted to go on a cruise, so that’s a must! I’d love to visit Bora Bora, Maldives, Sweden and Norway, in particular.

Clear my debts of about £4k then I'd spend whatever was needed to get my car in tip top condition, it's old but my first car, cheap to run generally and I love it and would like to keep it for as long as possible. And I'd pay a years insurance up front because it's a bit cheaper and would free up money every month to save for next year etc.
I'd then get DD brand new stuff for her room including decorating and carpet, same for mine, do up the other rooms and some bloody carpet on my stairs! New fencing around the garden and pay someone to finish sorting it out. New white good as they're about to die any day.
I'd give DD a couple of grand and take (or send!) my mum on holiday somewhere nice.
Visit family I haven't seen in years and a holiday for me, DD and the dogs.
Then I'd bank the rest if there was anything left either pension or savings and the money I'd save by paying stuff off and upfront would mean my life would improve.

All those would be budget things though but they'd still be an improvement on what we have now!

We would get a new kitchen and bifold doors. Probably take £25k of the £35, if not more.

Holliegee · 06/07/2024 15:52

I’d buy a car (nearly ready for my test) have my whole house decorated (it’s a tiny house) get a new stair carpet, do my garden a little and go on holiday with my partner - I’d give £10k to my son to go on holiday and have some back up money and then I’d sit in my lovely home and think how lucky I was.

I'd take my children to New York and buy new wooden sash double glazed windows for our house.

Any leftover would go into my pension.

OldTinHat · 06/07/2024 15:58

I'd get my bathroom done and give the rest to DC.

Put most of it towards converting the double garage.

FlippityFloppityFlump · 06/07/2024 16:11

I would use £10k (guesstimate) to convert the cellar into a TV/games room for DS who goes to high school this year.
I would put £10k into a pension or SSISA
Possibly use £5k ish to do the front garden and then spend £10k ish on holidays and weekends away for me, DH and DS

Get my teeth fixed

GiggleMugsMandy · 06/07/2024 16:14

Clear the last of my mortgage & fix the drive.

Shufflebumnessie · 06/07/2024 16:20

A family holiday and home improvements.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/07/2024 16:23

@NameChange101113 10k is not going to touch the sides of the work you want to do on the house!!!

LeaveTheClocksAlone · 06/07/2024 16:24

I would spend around £10k / £15k on a once in a lifetime trip to Antarctica.

Throw the rest at the mortgage.

CaptainOliviaBenson · 06/07/2024 16:27

Clear debts (around £15k). Get the car fixed up, (probably around £1.5k). Buy new furniture - around £5k). Go on a holiday of a lifetime.

House deposit

Andthereitis · 06/07/2024 16:29

I'd probably have a takeaway for tea.

Then: new worktop in the kitchen. Think about getting the chimney pointed more seriously.
Maybe a new front door.

Some watercolor paper. A big stash.

PoppyCherryDog · 06/07/2024 16:30

Move house. We’re looking to move atm and a house has just come up we like £35k above budget 😂 so this would be perfect to win right now!

LuckysDadsHat · 06/07/2024 16:31

Save 10k for us 5k for kids, spend 2k paying off my loan, 8k for other house decorating and then 10k on a trip to Disney world.

You're not getting that done for £10k 😂
In fact, you’re not getting it done for £35k so you need to hope your win is significantly bigger than you’re hoping for!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/07/2024 16:33

Exactly the same as you OP!

Yeah I thought £10k didn’t sound enough either. We probably spent £5k plastering our two bed house a few years back. And that wasn’t all the rooms.

Expo23 · 06/07/2024 16:35

I would get my kitchen and bathroom done as 10 years in and I still haven't. Leftover cash would go to Vasa and Mustercard.

JurassicClark · 06/07/2024 16:37

Sort the kitchen out. That would swallow it all, I think, but it would be so worth it to have a decent kitchen again.

triangleatthetop · 06/07/2024 16:38

Why such a specific sum?!

When I am imaging suddenly coming into lots of money, I imagine tens of millions! Just like when I imagine a lover, he's incredibly hot, not podgy and balding.

Rocknrollstar · 06/07/2024 17:19

I’d take DD on a cruise through the North West Passage or we’d go back to Antarctica. Tough call - it wouldn’t do both.
