If you won £35,000…

If you won £35,000, what would you do with it?

Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way with first…

I’d allocate around £10,000 to have work done on the house e.g. home repairs, such as having wall ties installed. We own a Victorian terraced house and subsidence is a common issue. We need cosmetic work done too, such as plastering and re-decorating the entire house. I also want a free standing bath and a new shower installed, along with hardwood floor fitted in the lounge!

I’d allocate another £10,000 to my S&S ISA, which is to be used as a top-up to my workplace pension.

Then the final £15,000 would be left to tick-off the big holidays on our lists! I’ve always wanted to go on a cruise, so that’s a must! I’d love to visit Bora Bora, Maldives, Sweden and Norway, in particular.

I’d take DD on a cruise through the North West Passage or we’d go back to Antarctica. Tough call - it wouldn’t do both.

See my previous comment. I'd be really interested to hear more about your experience? What time of year did you go? How cold actually was it? Did you see Orcas? Could you go into the water? What kind of clothing did you have to wear and was it provided? Was it an emotional experience? Did any of the animals interact with you? Did the scientists who escorted you there share any stories? How did you book it and if you don't mind me asking how much did it cost? Does the air feel fresher? Did your skin and hair feel any different in such a pure place? Was it spooky? Is it true you have to shit in a bag and bring it out of Antarctica i.e no human waste to be left there? So so many questions...

A mini grand piano, as good as I could get for £30-35K - new or refurbished.

Aposterhasnoname · 06/07/2024 19:00

Pay off the loan we’ve just taken out for the kitchen and book a holiday to Bali.

MulberryBushRoundabout · 06/07/2024 19:07

Pay off the loan we took out to do the kitchen.

Book a holiday for this year and next year.

…that would probably use it up! I’d probably put any leftover towards a new car, as that’s next on our big spending list.

Clear CC debt (more than I care to admit)

New carpet throughout

New shower

First holiday abroad since having DC3

Anything left over will be for fun / ever rising living expenses.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 06/07/2024 19:20

Sort out the conservatory to turn it into a room we can use all year round, the rest of the money

AgnesX · 06/07/2024 19:29

Lob a good bit in my pension and go on a good holiday with the rest.

...so many options and so little life.

Debt
decorate our bedroom
plaster one side of the house

thats all really. Im not one for holidays

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 06/07/2024 20:02

Half to my daughter and son-in-law.
The remainder would be split between a car and holiday (probably Italy).
In the very, very fortunate position of having no debt

Quisisana · 06/07/2024 20:05

Down-payment on a house in the countryside.

Pebbles16 · 06/07/2024 20:11

I would love to splurge: but we need a new roof and kitchen (mind you I've never had a new kitchen so that would be a treat)

jellybe · 06/07/2024 20:12

I'd add 15 of it to our house deposit, 10 on decorating the blank canvas that is our new house, 5 on a holiday and 5 into the rainy day account.

Furrydogmum · 06/07/2024 20:12

Either put in a high interest account and dribble £4k a year into youngest sons L isa until he moves out.. Or put it towards a loft conversion as he probably won't ever move out 😬

Redcliffe1 · 06/07/2024 20:17

I would take my kids to florida, pay £20k of my mortgage (the most I can without paying a penalty) and stash the rest for emergencies.

Nourishinghandcream · 06/07/2024 20:24

That is almost exactly the amount we have just shelled out on our garden so it would allow us to top up our savings.👍

EmeraldDreams73 · 04/09/2024 20:00

Definitely 20k into the mortgage, 10k into the house, and 5k to a family holiday.
