Have you even asked your children if they want German passports before beginning all this. If I have understood correctly they are only 1 quarter German.

They have a right to the passport if the German nationallity can be established. It's not about wanting one, they wouldn't necessarily need it but it's the right to apply which is so important.

@vdbfamily really?? It sounds far more complicated, did he have to give any documentation re his mum or dad whichever parent is German?
Or literally just his current UK, old German and birth certificates?

They said that once you are a German national you cannot not be one, so in effect, he was just renewing his passport. They did look at his birth certificate which obviously had his parents names on but he was born in London. It was quite straightforward and he had avoided doing it for years as would have had to give up UK passport previously.
My youngest DD and DH are going to the embassy next week to get her German passport sorted. I will get him to ask what the process is for a spouse.

Thats interesting.
DH and The DC have german passports but our research suggests that I can't get one unless we spend 2 years living there.
I would be delighted if I could get one sooner than Retirement

See last message... will ask next week🙂

Please, I would be really grateful if you could let me know.
We would love to move there in a few years but as thinsg stand if DH left me or died (more likely) I would have no right to stay in Germany

I don't think Germany allows you to have dual citizenship. Dh's cousin gave birth to her two dcs in Germany and had to choose.

It does.

boysmuminherts · 24/07/2024 15:39

It does.

It used to be only with another EU nation but it might have changed now

@Hoppinggreen

It may be 3 years, but check with the Embassy to be certain.

It looks like the first step is to make appt with dh then to get a new passport!

Germanpassport · 09/08/2024 10:10

@vdbfamily how did you get on with the passports please

We are one step closer. Dh full birth certificate has been ordered then I will make a appt for him to renew his passport.
However there is a awful lot of extremely confusing stuff about children and names on their website. I've read it several times I can't understand whether we need to or not need to do anything. I can't see why it's so complicated and the point of it.

Just wondering how you found this side or didn't need to bother? Thanks.

We have literally just left the embassy and are recovering with a Costa coffee! So our youngest, not yet 18, was processed today and all went well with both parents present. They tried last week with me not there. I had signed a form but failed to get a notary to sign so they were sent home again.
We asked the question re me getting a passport and he said I would have to live in Germany for 5 years.

vdbfamily · 09/08/2024 12:19

Re the names, are you married with same surname as DH. There is only an issue if kids have different name to the father I think.

londonmummy1966 · 09/08/2024 12:47

Just spotted this thread and thought 'd come on to say that we are in the midst of the process. Slightly more complex as DH's mother was German and his father English so he didn't inherit citizenship and has only been able to apply under the transitional rules. Assembling the information was quite complex but when he took it to the Embassy they were really efficient and took it all away and recorded it and gave him a reference number for the backing documents that could then be used by our DC, his sister and her children which was really helpful. We are about 9 months into the wait to hear back though........

Germanpassport · 09/08/2024 13:15

@londonmummy1966

Has he ever had a German passport prior?

I think that 9 months is a long time to be waiting with no response, londonmummy1966.

I would be inclined to send a message to the German Embassy to ask when the processing is likely to be complete, to be honest.

DH is half German but his mother also had a German passport. Because he had had a German passport before they said he had actually always been a German citizen and treated his application more like a renewal. Once he had his, it seems straightforward for the kids.

vdbfamily · 09/08/2024 13:24

sorry, that was not very clear, his dad is German and mum got passport because they lived in Germany.

Germanpassport · 09/08/2024 13:25

@vdbfamily thanks. Did you have to show his mums passport or have her involvement in any way? . Congratulations by the way!
All this admin and paper work and forms is hard work but it sounds like you are in the home straight 🙏

OP posts:
Germanpassport · 09/08/2024 13:26

Oh in that case did you need his dad's passport or details 😁 I'm trying to work out whether we need his mums details or involvement. Or even grandparent details

Thank you, will have to wait for retirement then.
We may be able to get EU citizenship for me more easily by having a business somewhere or similar

@londonmummy1966

Has he ever had a German passport prior?

No as it didn't pass maternally until more recently and they have had to bring in transitional rules to address this. Finding decades old tatty pieces of paper to satisfy the embassy was an interesting exercise.....

Germanpassport · 11/08/2024 16:18

@londonmummy1966 how recently because dh did?what sort of things did you need to find?

It's intriguing how some people seem to be in our situation and have manged to do all this in a breeze and others have struggled.

OP posts:
londonmummy1966 · 11/08/2024 17:07

@Germanpassport - DH started this process about a year ago - he needed his mother's birth certificate, marriage and death certificates and the document requesting that she kept her German citizenship when she married. The last document was the hardest to find and the most crucial as far as I can tell. I think it was more complicated for DH as it was a transitional rules case so extra paperwork was needed.
