I can't believe you can now have surgery to change your eye colour.

Is this a thing anyone else knew about? It's messed up.

Oh yeah, I've seen this kind of thing before. I remember seeing once, a few kind of thrash metal/death metal type of people, who were covered in tattoos, have their iris(s) tattooed so they were black. I assume it's the same kind of thing.

They must be absolutely insane.

Also my eyes are a lovely rich blue, so I would never change them. Why would anyone want to change their eye colour? Confused

😂 I think you need to be giving your perspective in the thread on AIBU about people complimenting themselves.

"Also my eyes are a lovely rich blue, so I would never change them. Why would anyone want to change their eye colour?"

Wtf 😅

This is like someone saying, "Also I have a tiny waist and large breasts. Why would anyone want to change their bodies?"

Tbf, I am a brunette with dark brown eyes... I don't want blue eyes. I don't want hazel eyes. I like that my eyes are like two "pissholes in the snow"!

It's all about framing.

Isn't it more to do with blue eyes and blonde hair being rare, so they stand out and people notice them more?

I guess in some places, but in the UK they aren’t rare at all! Well, real light blonde hair is less common as you get older but blue eyes are absolutely ten-a-penny.

LakeTiticaca · 05/07/2024 13:18

@booksunderthebed
Are blue eyed people expected to apologise now for their "white privelege"?
Jesus christ

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 05/07/2024 13:20

I grew up with red hair and blue eyes and everyone I knew had blue eyes.
I always longed to have brown eyes because I thought they looked so beautiful and that blue eyes were boring.

I still think brown eyes can be the most stunning eye colour, but they don't suit me (I tried coloured contacts).

I wouldn't go through surgery to change them though and I don't understand why anyone would as you can easily get coloured contact lenses if you really want a change.

There was a post on here recently from a woman really upset because one of her children had "inferior" brown eyes and the other blue. It completely went over my, and many others' head, but it was explained the significance was because the children were biracial and blue eyes are seen as higher status. Is this something to do with that?

I remember this thread. Remember thinking it was very odd.

I still remember reading fairytales as a kid where the princess was always blonde and blue eyed. I thought, how unimaginative. No pondwater-green eyes to be seen!

HowIrresponsible · 05/07/2024 18:23

I find it less disturbing than people having healthy breasts and genitals removed because they feel like the opposite sex.

I find it on the same level tbh. Dealing with a lack of confidence in their own identity by using extreme measures.

This is your white privilege talking. I happen to have green eyes but I belong to an ethnic group who mostly have brown eyes/brown hair.

As a child i never really played much with dolls since they were either blond haired and blue eyed or maybe black. It was puzzling to me since SO many people in the world have brown eyes and hair and various shades of white/brown skin.

My kids are all gorgeous but clearly (from peoples comments) since they have brown hair and eyes those are obviously hideous and not a single person has ever ever said what lovely brown eyes your child has.

Once child (not my best looking child by far) got a huge amount of comments on his lighter colour hair. Which (seemingly) was far superior to brown.

I have a relative who had blond curls. EVERYONE talked about how beautiful he was and ignored my kids. Solely based on his hair.

I wouldn't change my eye colour either but please understand those who do have experienced life long responses like this, clearly based on racist ideology that light skin, hair and eyes are superior.

Well 'not being complimented' isn't the same as being bullied though. I agree that beauty standards are Eurocentric but at the same time it's natural to compliment something that's unique.

I'm South Asian and have gotten lots of complaints on my brown eyes. Their shape and the length of my lashes. Also my smile.

People who change their eye colour due to not being complimented just want to be different. I bet if they could change it to anime purple or something they would do so!

I don't think it's because of raritiy that blonds are complimented. If it were, then redheads would be the most commented hair colour and we all know that is not the case. I suspect redheads get such a hard time in the Anglo centric world because they are mainly of Irish and Scottish descent and both were seen as lesser in the Anglo world.

Calling blue eyes "racist" is quite a reach!

I've seen this. I had two friends of Indian original, both pretty. The one with green eyes was always talking about her eyes because of the constant compliments from relatives etc.. I guess its like hair colour also in western culture where blond is often seen as automatically most beautiful.

I'm white with brown eyes and I've not seen the same comments or interest in eye colour about any blue or green eyed friends. So yes we can't judge what we don't know.

But its a shame. All eyes are beautiful.

MeinKraft · 06/07/2024 11:01

Oh I'd love brown eyes, where I live nearly everyone has blue and I've always coveted people with chocolatey brown eyes.

The amount of modification people are doing to their faces is becoming very extreme. It's not reflecting well on our society and the pressure to fit certain beauty standards.

I see different members of my family when I see my face in the mirror, some who are no longer with us. I see my late nana's distinct shade of blue eyes when I look at my son. It actually makes me sad that people are letting go of their individual faces so easily.

I dont like to see it myself but what I would say is 'becoming very extreme' is not true

Depends how far back you go I suppose (most people seem think life didnt exist more than 30 years ago) but people have always done extreme things to their faces such as putting white lead on it, years ago you would have all your teeth removed to lower the risk of tooth infection so very young people had false teeth, etc

And in other societies of course, there are also extreme modifications such as the neck rings and the big ear holes and lots of deep tattoos and scarring that some societies do.

Unfortunately its not new, there has always been extremities and wont end here.

It's a dystopian hellscape

Bit dramatic it's cosmetic enhancement just like the hoards of other cosmetic enhaments from face cream through to nose jobs and fact lifts.

Freefree · 06/07/2024 11:10

This has been a thing for quite a few years..I remember reading that some rappers wife had got it done, I can't remember who but it must've been about 8 years ago if not more.
As someone who spent their childhood trying to look more like paris hilton/britney/ Christina/jessica Simpson etc..I was like wow that's cool, when I first heard about it but it's so so dangerous and I'm so grateful that we now have people of all colours and builds that are deemed beautiful ( kardashians even though I can't stand them really did change some things for the better)

Brown eyes are gorgeous btw, especially when they are so dark you can't even see the pupil! Dark eyes are just lovely. I have green eyes, but they are more of a bird-poo green. I would take brown eyes over them any day. X

I read an article where it was called body modification ( for anything from Botox to face lift) rather than tweak or plastic surgery and when asked less people said they'd be happy to have it.
