Democracy before equality?

How many candidates were there in your constituency? We had six. Every single one of them a man.

I thought things would have moved on by 2024, but it seems not.

8 candidates to vote for and 5 of them are women.

anonhop · 04/07/2024 19:42

I don't think that's representative of most constituencies!

And for me, equality means that in some seats, it'll be mostly men + in others, mostly women :)

Pleaseleavemealone0 · 04/07/2024 19:43

5 candidates, 2 are women.
It will most likely be a woman (Has been a female Conservative looking like will be a Labour female).

HappiestSleeping · 04/07/2024 19:44

This cannot be legislated for. If we want more female candidates, more females have to put their hat into the ring. If your belief is that there is a reason that this doesn't happen, that would be a good discussion.

leeverarch · 04/07/2024 19:45

At least they weren't all white men, so that was something, at any rate.

I can't help wondering whether there are any constituencies where all the candidates are women.

OP posts:
PurpleSparkledPixie · 04/07/2024 19:46

I hadn't noticed but yeah, seven candidates but all male. Four are white and they vary from mid 20s to um... older. But every single one is male (and replacing a woman who has retired).

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 19:46

7 men, 1 woman

Don't see how it's anyone's fault, just how it is. And remember 2 of the Tories last 4 PMs were women.

leeverarch · 04/07/2024 19:48

The recently re-drew the constituency boundaries round here and we are now in a different one. I just looked at the candidates for the constituency were were in previously. 7 candidates and hooray! A woman is among them.

As long as they know what they're doing, what's between their legs is immaterial.

How could I forget? 💩💩

But I digress... that isn't the point of the thread. Are fewer women than men interested in politics, or is it simply that the local parties tend to favour male candidates?

OP posts:
LiterallyOnFire · 04/07/2024 19:56

7 candidates here: 2 women, 5 men.

AhBiscuits · 04/07/2024 19:57

4 women and 2 men.

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 19:58

I'd say fewer women are interested. Must be boring as hell!

Vikina · 04/07/2024 20:00

7 candidates. 4 women, 3 men. Both the main parties were fielding women.

Well said.

PatriciaHolm · 04/07/2024 20:01

Around a third of candidates are women, pretty much the same as in 2019 (34% then, 32% now). 47% of labour candidates are women, 31% of conservative ones are.

Ha. I was about to say the opposite. Local Labour politics has certainly been through a vicious few years. Infiltration by momentum and all that came with that. I think those aggressive beardy types don't create an environment conducive to women thriving.

But it's probably multi-factorial TBF.

AndThatsItReally · 04/07/2024 20:02

Seven or eight candidates - some men, some women. TBH I only looked at the two who had any chance of getting in.

It'll be one of these two: Sitting MP - white woman, main contender Asian woman.

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 20:02

We actually had a female MP last time, she did precious little of any note then left. She was best off out of it.

VolvoFan · 04/07/2024 19:49

Fair enough, but by the law of averages one wouldn't expect a 6 / 0 split.

How come that all six different political parties in one constituency managed to be so consistent in their 100% male choice of candidates? Jobs for the boys, I reckon.

We had Nadine Dorries!!!

Imagine how pleased we were to see the back of her...

7 candidates, 5 women 2 men (one of those a Reform candidate who was already kicked out of the party for being racist).

The Reform candidate being kicked out was a given. The party has to play the game.

Yes I agree, I’m sure his racist comments represented the party‘s (the company’s) views he just wasn’t meant to be stupid enough to air them. I was surprised he was still on the ballot as representing Reform but must have been too late to remove him.

BuyOrBake · 04/07/2024 20:25

Six candidates and four were women.
